Debut The Legend of Zelda

Zelda is one of the principal characters of the The Legend of Zelda series. She has normally inhabited the "damsel-in-distress" role, but she has played a wider variety of more active parts as the series has continued. In nearly every appearance, she is Princess Zelda of Hyrule. There are multiple Zeldas, and the strong similarities between them is explained by the fact that they are all part of the same royal bloodline, and they have all been named Zelda through either tradition or as a royal title. The beginning of the in-universe "Legend of Zelda" was shown in Skyward Sword, where Zelda was shown to be the moral reincarnation of the goddess Hylia. This is the first known Zelda incarnation and the only Zelda who is not some form of royalty. Throughout the series, Zelda is associated with the Triforce of Wisdom.

Background[edit]

These games follow the chronological order of the official series timeline from the Hyrule Historia. The Historia does confirm that not all of the princesses are named Zelda, and it implies that in some cases "Princess Zelda" is only used as a royal title due to the legends associated with the name of Zelda. The only clear case of this within the series so far is with Tetra in The Wind Waker. It is only in one branch of the three timeline branches where daughters of the royal family are traditionally mandated to be named Zelda.

Ancient Hyrule (Skyward Sword)[edit]

Hylia[edit]

Zelda originated in ancient times as the goddess Hylia. Hylia, also referred to as Her Grace, who was entrusted with the Triforce, by the Three Golden Goddesses so that she would protect it from those who misused it. She ruled over the humans (who would later be known as the Hylians) and the five great races of the land. She also empowered the three dragons and the sky spirit Levias. Her ultimate test came when an army of monsters led by the vicious Demon King Demise emerged from a fissure in the earth and ravaged the land. Hylia sought to protect her people and the Triforce first, so she gathered all of the surviving humans and the Triforce onto a patch of land that she cut from the earth and used the Goddess's Harp to send the land skyward. There they would form the civilization known as Skyloft and continued to worship the goddess for generations to come, but not by name. The Triforce wound up hidden within the Sky Keep on the bottom of Skyloft's Isle of the Goddess, although it is unclear whether or not she actually hid it there, and its existence was forgotten by the people for the most part. Back on the surface, Hylia entered the battle once her people were safe. It was described as the harshest and most brutal of battles, but Hylia ultimately won and sealed Demise away along with his demonic hordes. She knew that this was not the end, as Demise turned out to be too powerful for her to completely destroy, and she was weakened by her battle with the monster. Demise would break free from his seal over and over again until he was able to claim the Triforce, so Hylia began setting new plans into motion to stop Demise.

Her first plan guiding a chosen hero to claim the Triforce so that this hero could use its power to destroy Demise. To aid and guide the hero, Hylia created the Master Sword and a spirit tied to the sword named Fi. Fi was created with various memories that were locked away so that the hero would only receive the messages when needed. Most messages were prefaced by the goddess saying that she was guiding Link from "the edge of time". The Master Sword was left in a hidden chamber of Skyloft's Isle of the Goddess, in its weaker form as the Goddess Sword. This was because Hylia set up a method by which the Goddess Sword would have to be empowered by three sacred flames (matching the three goddesses) to reach its full power as the Master Sword. By passing each trial, the hero would also unknowingly prove himself worthy of a piece of the Triforce. This was all to make sure that the hero had a strong enough spirit to use the Triforce. The Isle of Songs was set up near Skyloft to help the hero learn the songs needed to reach the Sacred Flames, and Hylia also taught Levias and the three dragons each one part of the Song of the Hero, which the hero would need to find the Triforce's location. Hylia also arranged for various other ways of helping the hero, such as setting up Goddess Cubes and Goddess Walls to provide minor aid, and she seemed to have a hand in hiding the stone tablets which created holes in the cloud barrier allowing the hero to reach the surface.

Hylia's second plan was to abandon her divine form and transfer her soul into a human body so that one day the Triforce could be used. This act sacrificed her divine form and powers as well as her immortality, with only her divine soul being intact. It seems that she foresaw that her reincarnation would be someone dear to the hero, as part of her plan was that her mortal form would be placed in danger to motivate the chosen hero into actually becoming the hero.

The Goddess Reborn[edit]

Hylia was reincarnated thousands of years later in Skyloft as Zelda. She was the daughter of Gaepora, the headmaster of the Skyloft's Knight Academy. She initially had no memory of her previous life and lived a blissful existence. Zelda was friends with one student, Link, since he was a child. She believed in his strengths, but she chastised him as he grew increasingly lazy. Their bond was still strong enough that when they were younger, Zelda became jealous of Link's bond with his Crimson Loftwing. Zelda also had to endure the antics of Groose, who had trouble being discreet about his obsessive crush on Zelda and picked on Link due to being jealous of their bond. Zelda would often stand up to Groose and try to get him to leave Link alone, but he usually had trouble seeing the point. Although she seemed content with life in Skyloft, she always loved hearing about the fabled surface world from her father and dreamed of what it would be like down there. Zelda began hearing what seemed to be a voice calling out for her and wondered if Link could too. Although she though it could be nothing, it intrigued her curiosity about the surface world, which she firmly believed existed.

One year, Zelda and Link both had parts to play in the Wing Ceremony. Zelda was to play the part of the goddess and would participate in the ceremony with the winner of the race. An outfit of the goddess was prepared for the part, and she also knitted the sailcloth needed for it herself. The last part was the Goddess's Harp itself. Link was one of the contenders and would become an upperclassman if he won, so this caused Zelda to try to push him to work harder on winning the race. She had her Loftwing wake him up to keep him from oversleeping and also teased him by pushing him off the edge of Skyloft so that he would be forced into riding his Loftwing. However, one day Link's Loftwing failed to arrive, so Zelda leaped down and caught him with her own. She then helped Link to search for his missing Loftwing, and they were able to convince Gaepora to hold off the ceremony in the meantime. Link was able to find it and won the ceremony. Zelda gave Link the sailcloth and pushed him off the edge of the goddess statue for the last part of the ceremony, in which he used the sailcloth as a parachute. They then rode off together on Link's Loftwing. At this moment, Zelda was ready to confess something to Link, but a giant tornado arrived and whisked Zelda away.

Zelda wound up landing safely on the surface in the Sealed Grounds. A mysterious old woman was waiting and gave her shelter within the Sealed Temple. Zelda had been brought to the surface by the magic of Ghirahim, who wanted to use her in a ceremony to revive Demise. The old woman began to tell Zelda about her destiny and the truth behind her past. Zelda's next task was to unlock her memories to help in the battle against Demise in her own way. To do this, she had to purify herself in the waters of two different springs and offer prayers to the goddess statue. Zelda managed to navigate the Faron Province and reached Skyview Spring at the end of the dangerous Skyview Temple by herself. Her next destination was the Earth Spring at the end of the Earth Temple. She made her way up the dangerous Eldin Volcano, but she was captured by Ghirahim's forces right outside the Earth Temple. Zelda was held captive within a chamber of the temple to await Ghirahim's arrival. She was saved by the sudden arrival of a young Sheikah warrior named Impa. Impa brought her to the Earth Spring, where she performed her next ritual. Link managed to reach them just as they were leaving for a portal. Impa warned Zelda not to waste time talking to Link, so they disappeared through the portal. This may have been the time at which Zelda began feeling guilty about the way her plans at Hylia were manipulating Link's attachment to Zelda.

With most of Zelda's memories of her life as Hylia returning do to the rituals, Zelda was ready to pass through the Gate of Time to go to the past for their next task. Impa acted as Zelda's guardian and guided her through the Lanayru Region to the Temple of Time, which held the only working Gate of Time. Not only was Link able to catch up to them near the Gate, but Ghirahim also broke through in a last-ditch effort to capture Zelda. Link wound up distracting Ghirahim so that Zelda and Impa could both go through the Gate into the past. Before she left, Zelda gave the Goddess's Harp to Link. This was because Link would need it for his trials to strengthen the Goddess Sword so that he could activate the Sealed Temple's Gate of Time and perform the trials to earn the Triforce. Impa destroyed the Temple of Time's Gate after they passed through in order to prevent Ghirahim from following. They made their way to the Temple of Hylia, the past version of the Sealed Temple, where they were safe before they started the next part of the plan. Link eventually activated the Gate and met Zelda in the temple's back room. Zelda explained everything about her life as Hylia and the threat posed by Demise. She also informed Link of his next goal, which was to find the Triforce, and she gave the Master Sword the goddess's blessing in order to unlock its full potential.

Zelda apologized for the way Link was manipulated by her plans, but she was ready to pay the price. She encased herself in a crystal and put herself into a deep slumber that would last thousands of years. This would strengthen the seal on Demise until Link could properly destroy it. Zelda assured Link that despite all of this, she was still his Zelda and Gaepora's daughter, and she asked the "sleepyhead" to wake her up when Demise's threat was over. Zelda then entered the sleep. In the present, Link was able to use the Triforce to destroy Demise, and it dropped the Isle of the Goddess into the Sealed Grounds. She greeted Link warmly and after she stumbled, they both laughed at Groose's emotional reaction. Their celebrations were cut short by the arrival of Ghirahim, who quickly snatched Zelda and took her through the Gate of Time back to the past, when Demise was still around. He proceeded to engage in a magical ceremony which drained Zelda's divine soul in order to restore Demise to its true form. Demise mocked the now-powerless Hylia for "lowering herself" to a mortal body and summoned a tornado that would throw her to her death. Groose was able to catch her and brought her back to safety at the Temple. Her soul had not yet been completely absorbed by Demise, so there was still a chance to destroy Demise and save Zelda. Link returned to the Temple victorious after finishing off Demise. Zelda was brought to tears out of joy.

There were still a few matters left before they returned to the present. First, Fi had a brief reunion with Zelda and acknowledged her preference to be called Zelda rather than Hylia. Fi was pleased to see that Zelda was safe, and with her mission complete, she had Link place the Master Sword within a pedestal so that she would enter her eternal sleep. Zelda was then ready to return to the present, but Impa reminded her that she would not join them, as Impa was originally from the past and had to stay there. She reminded Zelda that she should know that with the goddess's memories. Zelda tried to fight it and convince Impa to come with them. Impa remained adamant in following her duties. Zelda settled for giving Impa one of her bracelets, and Impa said that they would meet again one day. Zelda, Link and Groose then went through the Gate of Time to the present while Impa destroyed the Gate behind them. After returning to the present, the old woman displayed Zelda's bracelet to the reveal that she was actually Impa. They were overjoyed to see her, and Impa told Zelda that she was right about them meeting again. Their joy turned into sorrow when Impa passed away almost instantly in a cloud of golden light. They gathered at the Statue of the Goddess afterwards, where Zelda sang while Link played the Harp beneath the Triforce. They waved goodbye to Groose when he set off to parts unknown with Cawlin and Strich, and she was also reunited with Gaepora when he came down to the surface. Zelda was glad to be able to enjoy the surface world, and she decided to stay there so that she could continue to enjoy it and watch over the Triforce. The game ended after Zelda asked Link about his plans for the future.

Pre-Timeline-Split[edit]

The ending of Skyward Sword also set up the primary struggle of the rest of the series. In his last words, Demise placed a curse on all those bearing the "blood of the goddess" (all incarnations of Zelda) and the "spirit of the hero" (the incarnations of Link). As long as people like them were around, an incarnation of Demise's undying hatred would appear to follow them and doom them to "wander a blood-soaked sea of darkness" for all of time. This foreshadows the coming of Ganon and explains the perpetual battles against him which always involve Link and Zelda.

It is implied that the kingdom of Hyrule was founded within some generations of Skyward Sword by Zelda's successors. The land of Hyrule and the Hylian people both took their names from Hylia. It also became common for daughters of the royal family to be named Zelda after the historical legend of Hylia, and the divine bloodline caused some descendants to have special powers.

The Minish Cap[edit]

One incarnation of Zelda was depicted in stained glass during the backstory. She was princess during the time that the Hero of Men fought evil with the Picori Blade. The Picori had brought the light force to Hyrule, and it was hidden within the princess. She was infused with its power, and it was passed down all females born to the royal family. Originally intended as an explanation for the princess's magic powers, this instead would now seem to complement the remnants of Hylia's divine soul for that explanation.

In the present of The Minish Cap, Zelda was a childhood friend of Link due to her father's friendly rivalry with Link's grandfather. They enjoyed the Picori Festival together, and after winning a game Zelda chose to give Link a small shield in place of the other, more superficial prizes. Things went well until the winner of the swordfighting contest, Vaati, began attacking in search of the mysterious light force. He saw the "power of the light" which Zelda wielded as a threat and so turned her into stone. Once Vaati found out that Zelda actually contained the light force, he began a ceremony to forcibly extract the light force from her which would kill her in the process. Link managed to intervene in time to stop the ceremony from reaching completion, and after beating Vaati, Lin used the power of the Picori Blade (now the Four Sword) to finally restore her to normal. When Hyrule Castle started to collapse, they made their way to the realm of the Picori, but were prevented by Vaati. After defeating him a final time, Ezlo gave the mage's cap to Zelda, and they combined their powers to restore Hyrule to its former glory.

Four Swords[edit]

Vaati reemerged at some point and was sealed within the Four Sword, which was enshrined at the Four Sword Sanctuary. It became a duty of the line of princesses to watch over the seal on Vaati. It was implied that they could only carry out this duty when they were young, as the Four Sword Sanctuary was only visible to children. The Zelda of Four Swords was childhood friends with Link and brought him to check on the seal when she suspected that it was weakening. They found that Vaati had already freed himself. He captured Zelda to make her his bride, but Link used the Four Sword to rescue her and imprison Vaati again.

Leader of the Seven Sages (Timeline Split)[edit]

In Ocarina of Time, Princess Zelda was initially shown as a child. The princess was already wise and elegant, and she was also known for being a bit of a tomboy. Impa of the Sheikah Tribe was appointed as her loyal nurse and bodyguard. Zelda had prophetic dreams which warned her about the threat posed by Ganondorf. She believed that he was trying to find the way into the Sacred Realm to reach the Triforce. Her father the king dismissed her claims due to his trust in Ganondorf. Only Impa believed and supported her until she met Link, when he sneaked into Hyrule Castle at the Deku Tree's request. Zelda related her apprehensions about Ganondorf to Link and came to believe that Link was the heroic figure from her dream. They hatched a scheme together so that they could use her Ocarina of Time and the three spiritual stones to get into the Sacred Realm before Ganondorf.

Adult Timeline[edit]

Link set out to gather stones and was successful, but Ganondorf made his move in the meantime to try to steal the Ocarina. Impa and Zelda escaped on horseback, and Zelda tossed the Ocarina to Link as they passed him so that he could carry on the plan. The Ocarina had a telepathic message of sorts attached through which she taught Link the Song of Time, which was the song needed to enter the Sacred Realm. Link was being followed by Ganondorf, who reached the Triforce instead. His impure heart caused the Triforce to split, and Zelda received the Triforce of Wisdom.

During the following seven years that Link spent in stasis within the Sacred Realm, Zelda went missing from the public eye. She had in fact disguised herself as Sheik, a descendant of the Sheikah, in order to hide from Ganondorf. Sheik began to appear to Link when he woke and told him about some of the things that had changed while he was asleep. She continually aided Link by watching his progress and teaching him songs that, when played on the Ocarina of Time, would allow him to return to the Temples of the Sages at his leisure. Sheik played these songs on a special harp that seemed to be the Harp of the Goddesses. She took a slightly more active stance when she saw Kakariko Village burning and helped to defend her former nursemaid's town, but she was quickly knocked aside by Bongo Bongo as it escaped from its seal.

When Link had awakened all of the sages and returned to the Temple of Time, Sheik met him there and told him about the Triforce. Link did not know that he had the Triforce of Courage until she told him, and she then revealed her own identity as Zelda, the seventh sage and the bearer of the Triforce of Wisdom. She also gave Link the Light Arrows, but Ganondorf was somehow watching and captured her only moments later within a crystal prison. She was rescued at Ganon's Tower after Link defeated Ganondorf, and they escaped the collapsing tower together. After Ganondorf turned into Ganon, he created a fiery barrier that locked him in a battle with Link. Link was separated from the Master Sword by this barrier, but Zelda was soon able to send the Master Sword over the barrier to him.

Once Link had incapacitated Ganondorf, Zelda lead the six sages in sealing Ganondorf away within the Evil Realm. Ganondorf swore revenge on Link and Zelda's descendents as he was pulled in. Zelda and Link wound up in some other unidentified plane of existence (which has been noted to be identical to the realm where Link fights Demise in Skyward Sword), where Zelda thanked Link for his efforts and also apologized to him, as she took responsibility for how awry the plans they had made as children had gone. To make up for it, she played Zelda's Lullaby on the Ocarina of Time, which sent Link back in time so that he could actually experience and live through his childhood. Once the two time periods were cut off from each other, this caused them to split into two different timelines. The Zelda of this timeline, the Adult Timeline, returned the Master Sword to the Temple of Time and closed the Door of Time, and her later activities are unknown.

Defeated Timeline[edit]

Within this hypothetical version of Ocarina of Time, Link was killed by Ganondorf in the final battle. He was then able to take Zelda and Link's Triforce pieces and became Ganon. Princess Zelda was still able to lead the sages in sealing Ganon away within the Dark World. Her later activities (including if she was with the seven sages who sealed the Dark World away in the Imprisoning War, as it is not specified if it occurs during her lifetime) are unknown.

Child Timeline[edit]

The last image of Ocarina of Time was of Link visiting Zelda in manner similar to their first meeting, with her presence implying that Link had arrived at a time prior to Ganondorf chasing Zelda from the castle. This was confirmed by Eiji Aonuma and the Hyrule Historia, which state that Link traveled back in time to before the Sacred Realm's openings, and he retained the Triforce of Courage. This caused the Triforce to split in the child timeline, and presumably Zelda received the Triforce of Wisdom. Regardless, Link came to warn Princess Zelda of Ganondorf's future atrocities, and it seems that the king listened to him. Link's testimony would lead to Ganondorf being captured before he could stage his coup.

In Majora's Mask, Zelda was seen once in a flashback that Link experienced when he retrieved the Ocarina of Time. She had given him the Ocarina of Time when he left Hyrule to search for the missing Navi and taught him the Song of Time. Zelda hoped that the Goddess of Time would watch over him. The Historia elaborates on this by saying that Zelda entrusted Link with the Ocarina and sent him on this secret journey to keep the Ocarina out of Ganondorf's hands.

Downfall Timeline[edit]

Princess of Light[edit]

Princess Zelda was held captive by the wizard Agahnim, whom had taken control of Hyrule Castle. She had been concerned about other maidens disappearing throughout Hyrule, and Agahnim indeed sought her because she was one of the maiden descendants of the seven sages. His plan was to use them as sacrifices to break the seal on the Dark World so that Ganon could be freed. The princess sent a telepathic call from her cell to Link and his uncle for help, but only Link made it there. He initially rescued her, and she was kept safe in the sanctuary with a priest for some time. Aganhim's men eventually raided the sanctuary and killed the priest while capturing Zelda.

Zelda was brought back to Hyrule Castle, where she was the seventh and final maiden to be sacrificed into the Dark World. Aganhim finished the ceremony just as Link arrived, and this broke the seal which held Ganon. Within the Dark World, she was encased within a crystal and held at Turtle Rock, and she was the last maiden that Link could rescue. Once the maidens were all rescued, they combined their powers to open the path to Ganon's Tower. Link succeeded in restoring peace to Hyrule with the Triforce, and Zelda was seen reunited with her father.

Oracle Games[edit]

In Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages, Zelda did not appear until midway through the second game to be played due to the settings being the foreign countries of Holodrum and Labrynna, respectively. She still played an indirect role by sending Impa to watch over Din and Nayru after fearing that they were being targeted by dark forces. Her travels during the second game were caused by a desire to help the other countries more directly. Zelda still wound up being captured shortly after her arrival by a different force depending on the game. If Oracle of Seasons was played first, Zelda was held captive by Vire in the Black Tower during Oracle of Ages, which forced Link to save her in the manner of Jumpman in Donkey Kong. If Oracle of Ages was played first, Zelda was held captive by the Great Moblin in Spool Swamp during Oracle of Seasons, and Link saved her after fending off only a few Moblins. The canonical order is Seasons followed by Ages, so it is the latter scenario which occurred.

Regardless, while she was inspiring hope near the end of the linked game, Zelda was captured by Twinrova to be used in a plot to sacrifice her in order to revive Ganon. Link came to her rescue, but Twinrova sacrificed themselves instead and Ganon returned, though not as strong as he could have been. Link once more fended him off, and he and Zelda escaped.

The Princess Between Worlds[edit]

A Link Between Worlds was set some generations after A Link to the Past. This incarnation of Princess Zelda looked up to her predecessor and ruled over the kingdom of Hyrule with the help of her nursemaid, Impa. She inherited the Triforce of Wisdom and also had been entrusted with the safety of the Pendant of Courage for her entire life. Eventually, she started to have prophetic dreams about fighting evil with a young boy. One day, their castle was visited by that young boy, named Link. Link came bearing news that a sorcerer named Yuga had turned several people into paintings with his magic. One of these people was Seres, who was a descendant of the sevens sages. Fearing that this might be connected to Ganon, she decided to send Link to see Sahasrahla to get his insights on the situation. She also decided to entrust him with the Pendant of Courage, because she felt that he was worthy of it.

Soon after, Yuga staged his attack on Hyrule Castle and surrounded it with a magical barrier. Zelda managed to evade Yuga until Link arrived with the Master Sword, but she was then caught by his magic and transformed into a painting while trying to question him about his motives. Yuga proceeded to use this painting and the paintings of the seven sages in a ritual which revived Ganon. Afterwards, the painting was hung within Lorule Castle, where Princess Hilda talked to the painting about her kingdom's troubles and Link's growing heroism. Hilda would later take the Triforce of Wisdom from Zelda's painting, as her true plan was to steal Hyrule's Trifoce for Lorule, as theirs had been destroyed long ago. During Link's final battle against Yuga Ganon, Zelda was able to communicate with Link even in her imprisoned state, and she produced a Bow of Light for him to use, which was essential for finishing off Yuga Ganon. Following Yuga Ganon's defeat, Zelda was restored to normal. As they confronted Hilda and Ravio, she empathized with Hilda's plight despite her attempt to steal Hyrule's Triforce and felt that the two of them were not so different. Hilda proceeded to sent Link and Zelda back to Hyrule permanently through the Sacred Realm. The Triforce came with them. Zelda and Link touched the Trifoce and decided to make the same wish together: to restore Lorule's Triforce, in order to help Hilda to restore her kingdom.

The Sleeping Zelda and Her Descendant[edit]

In the backstory of The Adventure of Link, the King of Hyrule from long ago had hidden the Triforce of Courage away, and passed only the Triforces of Wisdom and Power on to his son before he died. The prince and his magician suspected his sister, Zelda, of knowing where the Triforce of Courage was. When Zelda wouldn't tell them where the Triforce was, the magician put her into an eternal sleep. Consumed by guilt, the prince left her in the North Castle in hopes that she would wake up some day, in a room that only the nursemaid and her descendants would know how to open. It was decreed that all princesses of Hyrule would be named Zelda in honor of her. Prior to this, the naming convention had been unofficial.

One of these descendants was featured in the original The Legend of Zelda, where she faced the threat of Ganon resurfacing with the Triforce of Power. Zelda took the Triforce of Wisdom and broke it into eight pieces, and she had them hidden within the dungeons of the Underworld where Ganon's minions would not be able to reach them. She sent Impa out to find someone with the courage to defeat Ganon, while Zelda was captured by the Demon King. Impa found Link, who collected the Triforce of Wisdom, defeated Ganon, and rescued Zelda.

On Link's sixteenth birthday, Impa took him to the North Castle, where he found the sleeping Zelda from long ago. Link ventured to the Great Palace, where he defeated the Thunderbird and his own shadow to reclaim the Triforce of Courage. The complete Triforce was used to awake the sleeping Zelda from her slumber, and she rewarded him with a kiss.

Adult Timeline[edit]

Within this timeline, Hyrule was flooded by the Goddesses when Ganon returned, as there was no one to challenge him with the Hero of Time gone in the other timeline. The princess at the time, a young girl, still had the Triforce of Wisdom and broke it into two pieces at the instruction of her father, King Daphnes Nohansen. The king held onto one piece and stayed in Hyrule, while Zelda had the other piece and left Hyrule with a group of servants prior to the flooding. She was also entrusted with a special type of Gossip Stone that could be used for communication. On the Great Sea, she kept her royal heritage a secret, and they became a group of pirates. This Zelda could possibly have been Tetra's mother whom she mentioned in the game, but it is more likely some descendant due to the many generations which seemed to pass before The Wind Waker.

Tetra[edit]


Tetra was an incarnation of Zelda from The Wind Waker who was very different from the rest of her bloodline in terms of her appearance and personality. It is notable that even though her name was Tetra, the title of Princess Zelda was applied to her by King Daphnes due to her heritage, and uniting the Triforce of Wisdom was able to transform Tetra to resemble the traditional image of Princess Zelda, complete with a dress and lighter skin tone. By the end of the game, she lost the Triforce of Wisdom and returned to her original appearance. With all ties to the old kingdom of Hyrule cut, Tetra set out on a journey with the Hero of Winds to discover a new land. They got caught up in the events of Phantom Hourglass, but eventually Tetra was able to found a new land that she chose to also name Hyrule. Tetra ruled his kingdom and founded a new Hyrulian monarchy for this timeline.

Spirit Tracks[edit]

Zelda was the great-great granddaughter of Tetra who seemed to rule over Hyrule with the aid of Chancellor Cole one hundred years after its foundation. Cole appeared to be overprotective in the manner that he constantly oversaw Zelda and never allowed her to travel alone, but she felt suspicious about him. She also possessed a family heirloom, the Spirit Flute, which Zelda's grandmother had used to play her to sleep when she was young. Zelda also had bonds with her Teacher as well as the former castle guard Alfonzo.

The princess became alarmed by the disappearance of the kingdom's Spirit Tracks. However, she did not trust Cole and wanted to investigate on her own. To help her, she secretly slipped the young engineer Link a note while giving him his engineering certificate (in a graduation ceremony that Cole found superfluous) asking him to sneak up to her room and meet with her. Zelda explained that she wanted to investigate the Tower of Spirits and gave Link the uniform of a recruit so that he could help her sneak out of the castle and to his train. There she met Link's master, Alfonzo, who was glad to help her. However, the tracks disappeared beneath the train while they were en route to the Tower of Spirits, at which point Cole and his cohort Byrne attacked them. Cole revealed that his true intentions were to awaken Malladus, the Demon King who was bound by the Spirit Tracks, and used a magic spell to separate Zelda's spirit from her body, which Cole and Byrne then took with them. Zelda's ghost than drifted through Hyrule Castle in search of someone who could help her, but no one could see or hear her until she saw Link, who was the only person who could see and hear her at first. They decided to travel to the Tower by foot and work together to save Zelda's body, as well as the entirety of Hyrule.

At the Tower of Spirits, they met Tetra's old friend, the Lokomo Anjean, who told them that Cole's plan was to revive Malladus in Zelda's body, which horrified and disgusted Zelda, and motivated her to want her body back as soon as possible. However, the Tower had been fragmented by Cole's wrong-doing. So Link went on a quest with Zelda's ghost to guide him to restore both the Spirit Tracks and the Tower of Spirits. Zelda was also able to help Link more directly when they explored the Tower of Spirits, as there Zelda was able to possess the patrolling Phantoms in order to help Link solve the many puzzles of the Tower. After the Tower was completely restored, they scaled it to the top floor and battled Byrne together. They defeated him, but were distracted by basking in their victory, which caused him to escape. They then made their way to the roof too late, just in time to see Cole reviving Malladus in Zelda's body. After the Malladus-possessed Zelda betrayed and severely wounded Byrne, Cole and Malladus escaped on the demon train. Link and Zelda's ghost regrouped in the spirit train with Anjean and the unconscious Byrne, where it was decided that Link would travel to the Sand Temple to find the Bow of Light. Zelda decided to let Byrne live, hoping to "have words" with him afterwards (said while she was punching at the air). After Link found the Bow of Light, Link and Zelda explored the Tower together once more to find the Compass of Light in a hidden area.

Once they were fully prepared, they entered the Dark Realm and began the final battles with Malladus. After stalling the Demon Train, Zelda decided that she and Link would take on Malladus alone, due to Anjean and the repentant Byrne still being injured. Anjean summoned a new Phantom for her to possess, and they then made their way long the top of the train towards the Malladus-possessed Zelda while Cole attempted to distract her by summoning ghost rats and attempting to take control of the Phantom body. Eventually Zelda reached her body and held it in place while Link fired a Light Arrow that successfully expelled Malladus from Zelda's body. They were then all deposited back in Hyrule.

Zelda attempted to re-enter her body, but found herself unable to do so at first, and Malladus than attempted to repossess the body until Byrne sacrificed himself holding off Malladus. Calling out to Tetra to find the sacred power within her body, Zelda was then finally able to enter her body again. Link and Zelda then teamed up together against Malladus, who was able to temporarily assume his original form. Zelda had Link protect her while she charged up energy, and afterwards they performed a duet together with Zelda singing while Link played the Spirit Flute. Fully prepared for the final battle, Zelda then wielded the Bow of Light while Link distracted Malladus from attacking her. She fired Light Arrows at Malladus's back which stunned him so that Link could attack him. She then came over to help Link deliver the final blow.

Together they shoved the Lokomo Sword into Malladus's forehead, seemingly destroying the demon for good. Anjean than reached them and showed that Byrne still existed as a spirit. At this point Anjean and the other Lokomos became spirits as well, ascending to the heavens as Link and Zelda had proven worthy of protecting the land without the guidance of the spirits. Zelda watched sadly while holding Link's hand. She then returned to Hyrule Castle, and in the final scene she was seen looking out the window excitedly depending on whether Link decided to become an engineer or a warrior (a choice made before the final battle) after hearing him either driving his train or fighting outside, and if Link had responded uncertainly about his future job, Zelda would simply be seen going over paperwork without any sign of Link.

Child Timeline[edit]

The Princess of Twilight (Twilight Princess)[edit]

Princess Zelda appeared to be ruling over Hyrule, with no sight or mentioning of a king. She had led the forces of Hyrule in defending Hyrule Castle from Zant and his invaders from the Twilight Realm. She ultimately surrendered to Zant, when he made her choose between a surrender and the death of her people. Zelda was confined to her room in Hyrule Castle, but she was able to make an alliance with mysterious Twilight imp Midna. Midna later introduced Zelda to Link, a young farm boy whom had been trapped in the form of a wolf. Link later returned to her with Midna, who was dying of a curse inflicted by Zant. Under Midna's wishes, Zelda instructed Link on how to find the Master Sword, which reverse his transformation into a wolf. However, Zelda felt pity for Midna and began to realize just what she really was (the princess of the Twilight Realm). So Zelda put her power into curing Midna and disappeared.

Zelda was not seen again until near the end of the game. She was unconscious and on display in the throne room of Hyrule Castle, which was being occupied by Ganondorf. When Link and Midna arrived, Ganondorf possessed her, making her into Ganon's Puppet: Princess Zelda. This possessed Zelda used three basic attacks: swooping down with sword in hand, tossing dark magic blasts and summoning a triangle-shaped field of energy. To defeat her, Link had to reflect her dark magic blasts back at her (in the same vein as Aganhim). Ganondorf's spirit was then forced out of Zelda's body. Midna caught Zelda's body and rested it in the throne. Zelda was then restored to life as light flowed to her from Midna's body.

Afterwards, Midna teleported Link and Zelda to safety while she held off Ganon. Zelda than called on the power of the four light spirits and humbly asked Link to lend them the remainder of his power. Link and Zelda rode together atop Epona in battle with Ganondorf. Zelda fired light arrows to stun Ganondorf while Link attacked him with his sword. Zelda was separated from Link during the final phase of his battle with Ganondorf, however. After Ganondorf was killed, Link and Zelda saw Midna (whom had been restored to true form) off to the Twilight Realm. Zelda told Midna that light and darkness needed each other to exist, and said she believed that the goddesses had left behind the Mirror of Twilight because it was their will that they should meet. However, as Midna entered the Twilight Realm, she destroyed the Mirror with her tear and shut off the gates between the worlds of light and twilight forever.

Four Swords Adventures[edit]

During this time, Princess Zelda maintained the seal on Vaati at the Four Sword Sanctuary with a group of six Shrine Maidens. Zelda and the six maidens were kidnapped by Shadow Link and scattered throughout Hyrule while trying to check up on Vaati's seal. Link took up the Four Sword again, freeing Vaati in the process, and the Links proceeded to rescue the maidens one by one. Zelda was held in the Tower of Winds and was the last maiden to be rescued. Afterwards, she came to Link's rescue during his battle with the Shadow Links by removing the Dark Mirror, which had been spawning the Shadow Links at a rapid rate. When Vaati was defeated, Zelda led Link back down through the Tower of Winds, but they were attacked by Ganon. Using their magic, Zelda and the maidens trapped Ganon in the Four Sword.

Unknown Timeline[edit]

The Princess of the Wild[edit]

It was known that an incarnation of the princess existed during the backstory of Breath of the Wild, ten thousand years before the game's events. During this time, the Sheikah people had developed technology to help fight off Ganon in the form of an army of automatons known as the Guardians and four Divine Beasts that could be operated by Champions of Hyrule. When the time came for Ganon's attack, known as the Great Calamity, the Guardians and Divine Beasts were successful in critically wounding Calamity Ganon for the current Hero and Princess. The Hero was able to defeat Calamity Ganon, and the princess sealed him away. This seal would last nearly ten thousand years and usher in an era of peace for Hyrule.

Breath of the Wild[edit]

During the time period of Breath of the Wild, a new princess was born to Hyrule's royal family, to King Rhoam Bosphoramus and his queen. She was named Zelda in accordance with the royal family's traditions. From an early age, Zelda was intrigued by relics of the ancient technology from the original Great Calamity, and she came to be more inclined towards scientific research than magic. She was supposed to be learn about wielding the royal family's hereditary magical power from her mother, but the queen died suddenly when Zelda was only six years old, one year before she was supposed to begin her training. Zelda held her grief within and attempted to be strong. She constantly attempted to undergo the training without her mother, but she was unable to awaken the sacred power that she was supposed to wield. Her father was harsh with her about this and pressured her to train herself constantly. She was also often accompanied by Urbosa, the leader of the Gerudo people who had been a close friend of her mother's, and Zelda confided in her about some of her problems. Zelda was afraid that her struggles to awaken her family's magic meant that something was terribly wrong with her.

Over the following decade of her life, while Zelda continued to make failed attempts to awaken her powers through training, she started to dedicate more time to her true passion: research. She helped to work with Sheikah researchers (specifically Impa, Purah and Robbie in uncovering ancient technology that could be helpful when the time came for Calamity Ganon's return. The technology that they uncovered included Guardians, the Divine Beasts, a device that they decided to call the Sheikah Slate and the Shrine of Resurrection. Zelda was also sent out to recruit the different Champions who were chosen to pilot the Divine Beasts. She met with Daruk of the Gorons, Mipha of the Zoras, Revali of the Ritos and Urbosa, all of whom eventually agreed. The other Champion was Link, who was considered to be the new incarnation of the Hero after he successfully drew the Master Sword. They all attended a ceremony where the king confirmed the Champions, and Zelda was convinced to take a picture with the five of them afterwards.

The king decided to appoint Link as Zelda's appointed knight, a move which Zelda did not approve of. She was suspicious that the king was going to use him to monitor and restrain her movements. Link also made her feel insecure about herself, because of how easily he seemed to live up to his own destiny. She also felt that his silent nature meant that he was quietly judging her. Regardless, at Daruk's suggestion, Zelda held a ceremony in front of the Champions where she confirmed Link as her appointed knight and made a speech acknowledging the accomplishments of past heroes of Hyrule. During the ceremony, her delivery of the speech was subdued due to her insecurities about Link, which Urbosa was able to notice. Afterwards, Zelda tried to continue with her research, and she berated Link for following her around. She often made attempts to elude Link, but she also felt guilty about Link's confused reactions. Things hit a turning point during a visit to the Gerudo region, when Link suddenly arrived to save her from Yiga Clan assassins.

Zelda was impressed by Link's selfless actions and soon afterwards managed to engage him in conversations. She learned about his passion for food and the truth about his silence: that it was his way of living up to the duty of a Hero while working under pressure from the whole kingdom. Zelda realized that they were more alike that she thought, and the two started to build a bond. She started to openly accept Link accompanying her in most of her travels, and she became more playful with Link, such as suggesting that he eat a frog to test its medicinal properties. She also alluded to her own insecurities and problems, such as when she described the 'silent princess' to Link, a rare type of flower that could only thrive out in the wild. Some (such as her court poet, who himself carried an unrequited torch for her) believed that Zelda had even fallen in love with Link. At the same time, they also helped the Champions to learn how to control their Divine Beasts and made great strides in preparing for the coming of Calamity Ganon. But even as things were improving on those fronts, she had trouble in other areas. Her research hit some dead ends, such as her inability to access Sheikah shrines. Her latest attempt to awaken her power at the Spring of Courage failed, the growing number of monsters stood as a sign that their time was growing short, and she also faced trouble with her father. King Rhoam confronted her to criticize the amount of time that she had been dedicating to research instead of her training, comparing her actions to a "child's game". He even bluntly told her that citizens of Hyrule had started to call her an "heir to nothing, nothing but failure". He forbade her from taking part in any more research and commanded her to single-mindedly dedicate herself towards her training.

Zelda proceeded to make an attempt to offer her prayers at the Spring of Power, but that also failed, and she was left wondering in anguish what was wrong with her, while Link was nearby. On her seventeenth birthday, Zelda made her last-ditch effort to awaken her powers by going to visit the Spring of Wisdom atop Mount Lanayru. She only visited it then, because one was only considered wise enough to visit the spring at the age of 17. However, her efforts once again failed. She met with the Champions at the foot of the mountain and admitted her defeat. The others remained hopeful about finding a way for Zelda to awaken her powers, but they were disrupted by a loud commotion. It turned out that there time was up, as Calamity Ganon had finally broke free and was beginning to wreak havoc upon Hyrule. The situation quickly became bleaker. This time, Calamity Ganon was able to take control of the Guardians and the Divine Beasts, and the four Champions were killed in the process.

Zelda and Link ended up on the run together, and she broke down in his arms about how helpless she felt in helping anyone. The two of them ended up surrounded by many Guardians. She tried to get Link to abandon her and retreat, but he refused, even as he was heavily wounded. When he tried to take a Guardian's blast for Zelda, her powers finally awakened, and the ensuing bust of golden magic was able to disable all of the nearby Guardians. Link still fell and succumbed to his wounds, but she also began to hear the voice of Link's Master Sword, which instructed her about what she should do next. Zelda had two of the Sheikah take Link to the Shrine of Resurrection and left them with a message to pass onto Link: that he should liberate the Divine Beasts. She then returned the Master Sword to its place with the Deku Tree at the Korok Forest and tried to leave a message with the Deku Tree, but he cut her off and told her that any message of hers would sound better in her own voice. In that way, the Deku Tree expressing hope that Zelda and Link would both survive their ordeal. Zelda then went ahead to Hyrule Castle and was able to use her magic to keep both Calamity Ganon and herself trapped for over a hundred years. Although she could not defeat him under her own power, she could at least prevent him from spreading his power until Link's return.

One hundred years later, Link's revival process was complete, at the cost of all of his old memories. Zelda was able to telepathically contact Link even while holding Calamity Ganon at bay. The first time she did so was when she urged Link to wake up. She also informed him about such things as the blood moon. Her power was weakening, and she could not hold Calamity Ganon back for much longer, so Link's quest was an urgent one. Eventually, Link was able to enter Hyrule Castle just as the power of Zelda's seal broke completely. Link did battle with Calamity Ganon, and after he assumed his second form, Zelda was able to lend some help. With her power, she created several vulnerable points in Ganon's protective Malice that Link could attack. Link was able to exploit the weaknesses she created and defeated Calamity Ganon. Zelda was then able to resume her physical form and used her power to truly seal away (or possibly destroy) Calamity Ganon. She then met with Link for the first time in a century and asked him if he remembered her. If Link had regained all of the memories of Zelda that were available in the game, freed all of the Divine Beasts and regained the Master Sword, an extra ending scene appeared after the credits. In that scene, Zelda was shown to be traveling Hyrule with Link and helping the kingdom's citizens to rebuild their lives following the fall of Calamity Ganon. They also continued to look after the status of the Divine Beasts. It was shown that Zelda had lost her magical power completely, as she could no longer hear the Master Sword's voice, but she accepted that with contentment.

Tears of the Kingdom[edit]

Zelda continued her efforts to travel around Hyrule and aid in its reconstruction during the several years that passed between Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. She accomplished a lot during this time period. She visited the different lands of Hyrule to issue apologies for the fates of the Champions, and she befriended the current community leaders such as Sidon, Riju, Yunobo and Paya. She had several memorial stones set up in memory of those lost in the Calamity. She started living in a house in Hateno Village (that was formerly made for Link in Breath of the Wild, implying that either he gave it to her or they shared it) and established a secret room at the bottom of her nearby well. At Hateno, she also played a role in establishing the local school. She helped Purah with her projects and received a Purah Pad that she used as she traveled around Hyrule. Zelda also tamed a golden horse by the Snowfield Stable and seemed to make efforts to befriend all manners of people, including sharing recipes with some Hyruleans.

Although peace had temporarily returned to Hyrule, it was threatened by the spread of this mysterious substance called gloom, which was making people sick and causing items throughout the kingdom to deteriorate. It was determined that the gloom was originating from the caverns deep below Hyrule Castle, an area which Zelda had been urged to ignore in the past. To prepared for the potentially dangerous journey, Zelda accompanied Link to the Korok Forest to retrieve the Master Sword. She marveled at the Master Sword's ability to heal itself over time, and the Deku Tree clarified that the Master Sword did not only heal, it would also become more powerful when bathed in sacred energy. How powerful it would become would be proportional to the strength of the sacred energy. This information would stick with Zelda later. Soon afterwards, Zelda journeyed into the caves below Hyrule Castle while accompanied by Link. She was initially excited when they came across wall carvings depicting the mysterious Zonai, as they reminded her of legends about a Zonai helping to found Hyrule and taking part in the Imprisoning War, a period of Hyrulean history about which very little was known. As they pressed onwards, they discovered the Imprisoning Chamber in which an emaciated Ganondorf was being held in stasis by a disembodied arm. As they entered, the seal wore off, and the arm fell while losing the sacred stone that was attached to it. Zelda picked up the stone, while Ganondorf came to life and accosted them. With a wave of gloom, Ganondorf broke the Master Sword and corrupted Link's arm. He then proceeded to raise Hyrule Castle up into the air, which caused the ground beneath them to crumble. Zelda began to plummet, while Link made an effort to reach out to catch her hand. Before he could reach her, the sacred stone in Zelda's hand activated and caused her to disappear.

The sacred stone had actually reacted to Zelda's latent time powers and transported her back in time to the distant past. She was discovered by King Rauru and Queen Sonia, the first rulers of Hyrule, and so she realized that she had been sent back in time to the era in which the kingdom of Hyrule was first founded by them. Rauru and Sonia believed her story, and they decided to let her stay with them while figuring out how to send her back to her original time. To others, they referred to Zelda as a distant relative, which was technically true. They realized that as Rauru had powers over light, and Sonia had powers over time, Zelda must have inherited both powers. Sonia gave Zelda lessons in how to use her time powers, but it mostly involved relatively simple feats such as reversing the trajectory of singular objects. Zelda was unable to figure out a way to use her powers to return to the present. In an attempt to find answers, they consulted with Rauru's sister Mineru. The only solution Mineru knew of was a drastic one: the forbidden act of draconification. By consuming a secret stone, someone could transform into a dragon. This would make them powerful and able to live for thousands of years, but it would come at the cost of one's own self, and so it seemed like an unthinkable option. Zelda felt hopeless when it came to returning to her own time and facing the new crisis there, but at the same time she bonded with Rauru and Sonia in the past time period and sought to help them however she could. After Ganondorf visited to swear the Gerudo's fealty, Zelda expressed her suspicions about the man, only to learn that Rauru already distrusted him and was trying to keep him close to keep an eye on him. Despite Rauru's efforts, Ganondorf used an illusion of Princess Zelda to lure Sonia into a meeting. Sonia saw through the ruse and cornered the illusion with the help of the real Zelda, who used her time powers to reverse the trajectory of the knife that the illusion tried to throw at Sonia. But after the illusion faded, Ganondorf attacked Sonia from behind and stole her secret stone. With its power, he became the Demon King, while Zelda and Rauru were powerless to stop him. While Rauru was ready to fight Ganondorf then and there, Zelda urged him to tend to Sonia first, as she had just died.

In order to stand against the Demon King, Rauru decided to assemble a group of Sages who all wielded Sacred Stones. The sages consisted of Mineru and four warriors from Hyrule's other races (the Gorons, the Zora, the Ruto and the Gerudo), and Zelda also used her secret stone to act as the Sage of Time. Zelda attempted to warn Rauru about what she saw in the future, but Rauru remained dedicated to their course of action and concluded that if all else failed, they would have to place their hopes in Link. Despite their efforts, the Sages were unable to stand up against the Demon King, so Rauru was forced to make a drastic action, and he sacrificed himself to seal Ganondorf by trapping him in stasis. This began the seal that Zelda and Link had seen undone in the present time, with the arm that was holding the seal being Rauru's, meaning that Zelda's secret stone was originally his. As Zelda tried to figure out her next course of action, the broken Master Sword suddenly appeared to her, seemingly summoned by the Master Sword's will interacting with Zelda's time powers. The Master Sword communicated with Zelda that Link was safe, which cemented Zelda's plan of action. She decided to set things in place to help Link fight Ganondorf in the future. So she went to each of the four sages to explain to them that Ganondorf would rise again someday, so that they would hide away their secret stones for their descendants to use during the next conflict. She also talked with Mineru about her plans of undergoing draconfication. As Mineru was slowly dying from her battle wounds, it was decided that she would place her spirit in Zelda's Purah Pad, so that her spirit could help Link in the future. Mineru also made other arrangements to help Link in the future, such as helping to set up the sky islands and constructs that would one day help Link. Once all of the arrangements had been made, Zelda swallowed her secret stone and grabbed the Master Sword. With her last words as herself, she urged Link to "protect them all". With that, Zelda transformed into a Light Dragon and traveled through the skies of Hyrule through the entire duration of the kingdom's history, which spanned well over 10,000 years. During this time, the Master Sword was planted within her hair, where it healed and became stronger, awaiting the day that Link would come to reclaim it.

During the present timeline of Tears of the Kingdom, Zelda continued to roam the skies in the form of the Light Dragon. She had cried several Dragon's Tears which contained her memories, and geoglyphs were erected around the tears. By entering a tear, Link could witness flashbacks of Zelda's memories that told the story of what happened to Zelda in the past era. Ganondorf once again summoned an apparition of Zelda, which was actually Phantom Ganon in disguise, and he used it as his avatar in causing trouble across Hyrule, such as corrupting Yunobo and attacking Dorephan with sludge, as well as petty acts such as scaring Zelda's horse. Despite Zelda losing herself to the Light Dragon, visions of the real Zelda made two appearances. First, when Link entered the Temple of Time on the Great Sky Island, a vision of Zelda interacted with him and held his hand while passing on the Recall ability to him. This was similar to the later scenes in which the sages made vows with Link, and could represent Zelda passing part of her own power as a sage onto Link. Afterwards, Link was eventually able to find the Light Dragon and pulled the Master Sword out. As he did so, he received one more vision of Zelda left from the past, in which she communicated the hope she placed in Link and the Master Sword, and she expressed that she would help him through the Master Sword's battle.

During the final battle against the Demon King, Ganondorf ultimately swallowed his secret stone to become a Dark Dragon. The Light Dragon arrived to help Link, and she let Link ride her through the skies of Hyrule as he fought the Dark Dragon. After Ganondorf was finally destroyed, the spirits of Rauru and Sonia channeled their powers through Link and his arm to reverse the draconification process. So the Light Dragon turned back into an unconscious Zelda, who started to plummet through the sky. This time, Link was able to catch her and guided her to safe landing in a lake. Zelda awoke without any memories of her time as a dragon and saw that they were successful in saving Hyrule. Afterwards, Zelda, Link and Purah went up to the Great Sky Island with Mineru and the new sages (Tulin, Yunobo, Sidon and Riju). There, they bid farewell to Mineru, whose spirit was ready to move on to the afterlife to assure Rauru and Sonia's spirits that all was well. Zelda was saddened to lose her, but she decided to dedicate herself to upholding peace in Hyrule for all time. The remaining sages proceeded to make a vow of loyalty to Princess Zelda.

In Other Zelda Games[edit]

In Zelda Game & Watch, Zelda was held captive and had to be rescued. She mad a brief appearance at the end, and the instruction manual referred to her as Link's sweetheart. She was also referenced in Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, in which her image appeared on some of the scratchcards given out by Madam Scratchcard.

Hyrule Warriors[edit]

Zelda was featured in Hyrule Warriors, where she was playable as both Princess Zelda and Sheik. Zelda's attacks in this game utilize magical spells and firing Light Arrows. Her default weapon is the Rapier, but she could alternately use the Baton (as in the Wind Waker) or the Dominion Rod. In this game, Zelda has an original design resembling her Twilight Princess design. Her outfits from Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword could also be obtained, and her Breath of the Wild outfit was unlockable in the game's Definitive Edition. Tetra and Toon Zelda (based on her appearance in Spirit Tracks) were also available are playable characters through DLC or in later versions of the game.

In the storyline of Legend Mode, Princess Zelda bore the Triforce of Wisdom, and she was haunted by prophetic dreams of dark days coming to Hyrule. Impa was the commander of her forces, but she also acted as Zelda's confidant, and together they hoped to find a hero to help combat the darkness. The first skirmish between Hyrule's forces and the encroaching dark forces was shown in the Cia's Tale scenario ""The Invasion Begins", in which Zelda was ultimately forced to retreat after facing the army being commanded by Volga and Wizzro.

In the first scenario of the main storyline, "The Armies of Ruin", Zelda and Impa still lead their forces out to do try to fight off the dark forces once more. They ended up receiving aid from Link, whom Zelda recognized as a promising young recruit in the army, and who turned out to have received the Triforce of Courage. Despite that, Hyrule Castle was claimed by the enemy in the end, and Hyrulean forces ended up retreating. Zelda went missing after the battle, as she decided to operate as Sheik for the time being. Sheik appeared before Impa and Link in the Eldin Caves in "The Sheikah Tribesman". She saved them from dark forces and assured them that the princess was still alive, but that they would not meet her yet. Sheik kept her identity a secret even from Impa, and so Impa grew suspicious of Sheik, despite Sheik's attempts to prove herself to Impa specifically in the following battles. Her suspicions only intensified later on, when Sheik claimed to hail from the same clan as Impa, as she never knew anyone like Sheik.

They then met a new ally in the form of Lana in the Faron Woods in "The Sorceress of the Woods", who brought some information on the enemy leading the dark forces, Cia. With Lana's guidance, they then attacked the Valley of the Seers in "The Sorceress of the Valley" in an attempt to defeat Cia by sealing off the Gate of Souls that was granting her power. The plan ultimately backfired, as Cia sensed the presence of the other Triforce pieces and managed to extract them from Link and Sheik. With the Triforce in her possession, Cia opened Gates of Souls in three other time eras, which also freed three of the four fragments of Ganondorf's soul. But it also left behind portals to those eras; Link, Impa and Lana decided to split up and travel through one of those portals to try to close each era's respective Gate of Souls.

Sheik opted to follow Impa through the portal she had chosen, which led them to the time known as the Era of Myth (the time period of Ocarina of Time). Upon arriving in the past, they learned that Darunia had captured Princess Ruto after a supposed meeting with Princess Zelda. So they battled Darunia, who turned out to have been brainwashed, in "The Land of Myth". Together they defeated Darunia and the Big Poes who were helping to fuel the mind control spell. With him swayed to his senses, he released Ruto, and the two of them provided aid during the final battle. In "The Water Temple", their forces marched on Lake Hylia after learning that the Gate of Souls was within the Water Temple there, and that it was guarded by Princess Zelda. Sheik was sure that the Zelda was an imposter and had Ruto retrieve a Lens of Truth for them to use. Ultimately, they defeated the fake Zelda, and the Lens of Truth was used to reveal that it was Wizzro in disguise. Sheik then decided to reveal how she knew that the other Zelda was an imposter, and she did so by transforming to finally reveal her true name as Zelda. Zelda apologized to Impa for the deception, and together they closed the Gate of Souls.

When they returned to the present, Zelda revealed the truth to the others, and they also learned the true nature of Lana's connection to Cia: that Lana was the living personification of the light that Cia cast out from her soul. At that time, the Triforces of Wisdom and Courage returned to Zelda and Link, respectively. Zelda saw this as a good sign, so they pressed on with their efforts and went on to claim the Master Sword in "The Sacred Sword", so that they could use it to battle with Cia. However, their next attempt to battle at the Temple of Souls went awry in "A War of Spirit" due to Link's newfound bravado. Although Zelda had faith in Link, Impa doubted him due to his new streak of recklessness that came with wielding the Master Sword. Certainly enough, Cia took advantage of Link's flaws to create Dark Links to distract the Hyrulean forces while she escaped. Zelda and the others still came to protect Link when he was about to be overwhelmed by his dark clones. In turn, Link protected them from the advance of Ganondorf, forcing him to retreat so that the Hyrulean forces could pull back.

In "Shining Beacon", the Hyrulean forces mounted their next attack on the Valley of Seers, and this time they were finally successful in defeating Cia. Cia seemingly perished in the aftermath, with the Triforce of Power passing on to Lana. After exchanging some words with Lana, they set off to return to Hyrule. The newfound peace would be shortlived, however, as Ganondorf managed to fully revive. They received warning after he stole the Triforce of Power from Lana, and in "Battle of the Triforce", Zelda and Link attempted to stand up against Ganondorf together. But this time they lost, and Ganondorf stole their pieces to complete the Triforce.

Afterwards, Zelda and all of her allies prepared a counter against Ganon, starting with defeating his lieutenants (Ghirahim and Zant) in "Enduring Resolve". And then in "Liberation of the Triforce", they made their last stand against Ganondorf. He ultimately used the power of the Triforce to turn into Ganon, but Zelda was able to create Light Arrows that Link was able to use to weaken him. Ganon was finally destroyed once more, and the individual Triforce pieces returned to Zelda, Link and Lana. With the combined Triforce, they sealed Ganon away once more. Zelda and Link then returned to the Temple of the Sealed Sword, to return the Master Sword to its pedestal. Link ended up struggling with it due to the resistance put up by some lingering dark force, but with Zelda's help, the Master Sword was placed back in its pedestal.

Zelda and Link were then seen returning to Hyrule Castle at the end of the last chapter of Linkle's Tale, "The Other Hero", with Linkle having saved Hyrule from the remaining dark forces while they were putting the Master Sword away. Afterwards, Zelda stayed behind during the Wind Waker based storyline, although Tetra played a role.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity[edit]

Zelda was again featured as a playable character in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, based specifically on the Breath of the Wild incarnation. Initially, Zelda wears her main suit from the game and has gameplay involving using the various Sheikah Slate abilities, due to her own lack of fighting ability. A variant is unlocked through the storyline when Zelda's powers awaken; this version is Zelda wearing her ceremonial dress and utilizes attacks based on light magic while wielding a Bow of Light. The DLC also added another variant, which was Zelda in her default Breath of the Wild outfit riding the Master Cycle.

The game's storyline followed an alternate version of the backstory from Breath of the Wild. A Diminutive Guardian activated during the Calamity and traveled back in time to prevent it, meeting with Zelda and the others several months prior to Calamity Ganon's awakening. Its arrival caused events to progress earlier than planned, as Zelda and the others worked on recruiting the Champions and preparing for the Calamity while trying to investigate the little Guardian's origins. Zelda also came to be fond of Link before he found the Master Sword or was assigned as her knight, so she never bore any animosity towards him in this version of events. Zelda still faced obstacles from King Rhoam in her attempts to research and was sent to several springs in attempts to awaken her powers, but to no avail. As in the original course of events, Zelda was planning to go the Spring of Wisdom on her birthday in a last-ditch effort to awaken her powers. But this time, Calamity Ganon's attack began before she could leave the castle, just as the little Guardian was trying to warn her about it. They evacuated from the castle, but King Rhoam stayed behind to distract the Guardians and seemingly sacrificed himself.

The small Guardian was able to bring in more reinforcements from the future (Yunobo, Teba, Riju and Sidon) who were able to save the Champions and the Divine Beasts from the Blight Ganons, and Rhoam turned up alive with his forces to further help Zelda. It turned out that Rhoam was saved by an ancient shield that Zelda had given to him, which led him to reconcile with her. With all these allies, the forces of Hyrule pushed back against the forces of Calamity Ganon. They received one blow when the little Guardian was possessed by Malice, and they were forced to severely damage it in battle. The little Guardian played Zelda's Lullaby to calm Zelda, and this awakened her childhood memories: this was Dimunitive Guardian was one that she had salvaged when she was a small child, prior to her mother's death, and she had named it Terrako. Her father had confiscated it after her mother's death as a distraction, and she forgot about it until that point. Terrako later sacrificed itself during the final battle against Calamity Ganon. Ultimately, Calamity Ganon was defeated, and the Calamity was successfully averted with Link, Rhoam and the Champions all surviving. Yunobo, Teba, Riju and Sidon were returned to their original timeline, with Zelda valuing their friendship. In the epilogue, they gathered enough parts to repair Terrako, and Zelda tearfully reunited with her small companion.

Video Games[edit]

  • Zelda appeared in the three Zelda games for the CD-i. In the first, Link: Faces of Evil, she was again captured by Ganon and eventually rescued by Link. The follow-up sequels, Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon and Zelda's Adventure featured Zelda as a playable character for the first time rescuing Link from Ganon.
  • Princess Zelda's robes have been included as alternate outfits for some characters in different third party games: for Nina Williams in the Wii U version of Tekken Team Tournament, for Miu Hanasaki in Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water and for the player's custom female character in Samurai Warrior Chronicles 3 (unlocked by transferring save data from the game's demo).
  • In Yoshi's Woolly World, Yoshi designs based on Zelda and Sheik's appearances could be unlocked by scanning their respective amiibos.
  • In Super Mario Maker, some of the potential Mystery Mushroom costumes that Mario can turn into include 8-bit versions of Zelda (based on her Twilight Princess design), Sheik and Tetra. They can be obtained by scanning their respective amiibos or as random prizes for completing 100 Mario Challenges. The Zelda and Sheik costumes can temporarily transform into each other.
  • In Cadence of Hyrule, she was featured as one of the main playable protagonists, along with Link and Cadence. At the beginning of the game, the player could choose to play as either Zelda or Link. If Zelda is chosen, then Zelda would wake up at Hyrule Castle and speak with Impa before embarking on her adventure. If Link is chosen, then Zelda would be found unconscious at Kakariko Village and would have to be unlocked by waking her up with a Hibiscus Potion. The potion was obtained by defeating Shadow Zelda in the Kakariko Crypt. This also marked the first appearance of an evil doppleganger of Zelda in the form of Shadow Zelda, who later became playable through the game's DLC.

Super Smash Bros.[edit]

Within the Super Smash Bros. series, Zelda first appeared as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Melee and has been playable in every installment since then. In these games, she uses a variety of magic spells including the ones that the three goddesses had given Link in Ocarina of Time. She also had the ability to transform into Sheik in all games until transformations were removed in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, and Sheik was made available in a separate character slot instead. Zelda's default appearance was first based on her Ocarina of Time design, then her Twilight Princess design (in Brawl and the fourth game) and most recently her A Link to the Past design (in Ultimate). Ultimate is the only game where she is an unlockable character. Zelda and Sheik can individually be unlocked either through the game's variable-based unlocking system or by awakening the character in Adventure Mode.

In Ultimate, Zelda's personal Classic Mode route is called "Wisdom Prevails". It involves Zelda facing off against various antagonists, which ends in a battle against Ganondorf, who transforms into Ganon upon being defeated. Sheik's route is called "Masquerade", and it is themed around fighting enemies who have their faces obscured by masks, helmets, hoods or even glasses, with Master Hand being the final boss.

In the 3DS/Wii U game and Ultimate, a Zelda Wig (reflecting her design in each respective game) and Sheik Mask have also been made available as headgear for Mii Fighters.

Trophies/Stickers/Spirits[edit]

Zelda and Sheik each have three unlockable trophies in Melee, while in Brawl she has seven: one normal trophy each for Zelda and Sheik, one for each of them depicting their Final Smashes as well as trophies for Robed Zelda (from Twilight Princess), Zelda's Wind Waker appearance and Tetra. For the 3DS and Wii U Smash, Zelda and Sheik each have two trophies that are available in both versions. The 3DS version also has extra trophies for her child and adult appearances in Ocarina of Time, for her self in Spirit Tracks and for her spirit form from that same game. The Wii U version has trophies for her Final Smash, her Wind Waker appearance, for Tetra and for her hooded Twilight Princess appearance.

In Brawl, there are also stickers of Zelda as seen in A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, Ocarina of Time (her child self) and The Minish Cap, as well as of her as Tetra from The Wind Waker and as Sheik from Ocarina of Time.

In Ultimate, Zelda and Sheik each have one Fighter Spirit that is obtained by beating Classic Mode with the respective character. There are also Primary Spirits for several specific incarnations of Zelda: the ones from Ocarina of Time (one of her young self that can be enhanced into her older self), The Wind Waker (enhanced from Tetra's Spirit), Spirit Tracks (enhanced from a Phantom's Spirit) and Breath of the Wild.

Brawl: The Subspace Emissary[edit]

Within Brawl's Adventure Mode, "The Subspace Emissary", Zelda was first seen with Princess Peach watching over the battle between Mario and Kirby in the Mid-Air Stadium. Afterwards, both were captured and held in cages by Petey Piranha. Kirby freed one, with the other being turned into a trophy and captured by Wario, which was later taken by King Dedede until Bowser took it from him. The princess Kirby did rescue accompanied him until she was turned into a trophy by Bowser, and the shadow bugs then formed a shadow clone of the princess that was soon defeated in battle.

The two princesses were held aboard the Halberd until rescued by Meta Knight, Lucario and Solid Snake, who first had to defeat shadow clones of both princesses. Zelda then turned into Sheik and with Peach they fought their way to the deck of the Halberd during an aerial battle between the Halberd and Fox McCloud's Arwing. After one of Arwing's lasers went off close to Peach, Sheik defensively jumped onto the Arwing and tore Fox from the cockpit. After landing on the Halberd's deck, the two nearly broke into combat until Peach instantly resolved the combat by offering tea. The three then returned to combat when the massive Duon attacked them. After this, they all joined with the game's main party for the final battles in Subspace. If Link and Zelda were saved from trophy form, they then chose to revive Ganondorf from his own trophy form so that he could help them in the final battles.

Ultimate: World of Light[edit]

In the Adventure Mode of Ultimate, "World of Light", Zelda was among all of the fighters who initially assembled to confront Galeem and his army of Master Hands. Zelda was one of the four characters to receive spoken lines in that scene, saying, "Stow your fear. It's now or never!" in regards to the upcoming battle. When Galeem's light was unleashed, Zelda was shown trying to protect herself with Nayru's Love, only to fail and be wiped out with the rest of their forces. The fighters were then put under Galeem's control, and copies of them were sent out to act as hosts for the various Spirits.

Sheik was among the first characters who could be awakened in Adventure Mode; after defeating Mario in one of the mode's first battles, the player had to choose between three paths that were each guarded by a character. Sheik was guarding the northern path, while the other paths were guarded by Marth and Villager. When the player chose a path, Master Hand would appear to block off the other two paths, and they would have to be accessed later. As for Zelda, she was found in the Sacred Land (an area based on Hyrule) within the Dark Realm and was awakened after being defeated in battle, at which point she became part of the characters' Adventure Mode roster. Awakening her also caused the Triforce of Wisdom to appear, which was part of what was needed to reach the area's boss.

Other Media[edit]

  • Zelda appeared as a main character in the 13-episode Legend of Zelda cartoon series, where she frequently had to be rescued by Link and would often refuse his attempts to kiss her, prompting his catchphrase of "Well excuuuse me, princess!", and she had the role of protecting the Triforce of Wisdom from being stolen by Ganon. This is also the first time Zelda is shown as being skilled with a bow, and her outfit (which included pants as opposed to the dress that was typical throughout most of the game series) reflected her more active physical role in the series. Her father, King Harkinian, also appeared. Link and Zelda also appeared in an episode that crossed over with Captain N: The Game Master.
  • Zelda appeared in the Valiant comics Legend of Zelda comics, which mixed elements of the cartoon series with material that was introduced in Zelda II and was depicted in a somewhat more serious light.
  • The manga adaptation to The Legend of Zelda established the "Zelda lineage" as the caretakers of the Triforce, and the backstory showed the previous blue-haired Princess Zelda (XVI) as the holder of the Triforce of Power, until Ganon killed her to claim it. However, the young Princess Zelda XVII, her daughter, was able to repel him with the Triforce of Wisdom that her mother had passed down. This Zelda grows into a rebellious, tomboyish princess who convinces the cowardly Link to accompany her in investigating Ganon's return. She actually battles Ganon briefly, but she is defeated and captured, at which point she scatters the Triforce of Wisdom so Link could find it. She remains in a slumber until Link slays Ganon and awakens her, at which point she is glad both to see that Link had rescued her and that her mother's Triforce was free. Although neither of the two find out, it is shown within this story that Link and Zelda are actually half-siblings due to the previous princess's taboo affair with the elf hero Rune.
  • Zelda appears in the 1992 comic adaptation of A Link to the Past, which expands on her relationship with Link in a tragic light. They communicate primarily over telepathy to defeat Ganon. Zelda becomes queen afterwards, while Link becomes guardian of the Triforce. Their duties force them to be distant after they used to be so close, with Zelda reflecting on the irony that they were at their closest when fighting Ganon, and that she would never forget when they were together in their dreams.
  • Zelda appeared throughout the manga adaptation of Ocarina of Time which expanded on her game role. She was shown as a tomboy and met Link in Hyrule Castle Town in her first appearance. Her transformation to Sheik was also expanded upon and involved hypnotism performed by Impa to truly make her like a different person. She teams up with Link in the Gerudo Valley, and it is here where her true identity is revealed and she is captured by Ganondorf in this continuity.
  • Zelda makes a few appearances in the Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages manga, but does not play a prominent role due to Twinrova attempting to sacrifice her being omitted from this version.
  • She also appeared in the 2005 manga adaptation of A Link to the Past and the The Minish Cap adaptation, with mostly identical roles as in the original games.
  • Zelda appears in the Four Swords Adventures adaptation, where she is shown to bond with Shadow Link while being held captive by Vaati.
  • The 2012 Skyward Sword manga that was included in the Hyrule Historia acted as a prequel to the game featuring the goddess Hylia. It was shown that Hylia was the original rider of the red Loftwing that would later be Link's, and she also brought the Master Sword to Link when choosing him as her champion. She claimed that the Master Sword was originally created for the gods and had Link reforge it so that it could be wielded by mortals. It was also revealed that she was responsible for the trials Link had been through in being wrongly imprisoned, as a way to test him and prepare him for his role as a hero. Link ultimately died helping to raise Skyloft while fending off Demise, and Hylia chose to reincarnate their souls whenever Hyrule was in trouble, explaining the cycle of reincarnation throughout the series. A young version of the Skyward Sword Zelda also appeared in scenes bookending the manga, in which she kept Link from falling asleep during class. It is unclear if this manga is meant to be canon.
  • She was featured in Akira Himekawa's manga adaptation of Twilight Princess, which ran for 70 chapters from 2016 to 2022.

Voice Acting[edit]

There have not been fully voiced scenes featuring Zelda until Breath of the Wild, so for all of her appearances until then, her Japanese voice was retained for the English release. She has had a number of different voices throughout the years.

Jun Mizusawa was her original voice in Ocarina of Time. She went on to voice her in Twilight Princess, her Super Smash Bros. appearances and her appearance in Super Mario Maker. Then, Hikari Tachibana became the voice of younger incarnations of Zelda, including Tetra, voicing Zelda/Tetra in The Wind Waker, Four Swords Adventures, The Minish Cap and Phantom Hourglass, as well as voicing "Toon Zelda" in Hyrule Warriors.

There are also several actresses who only voiced Zelda in one game each: Akane Omae in Spirit Tracks, Ayumi Fujimura in A Link Between Worlds and Saori Seto in Hyrule Warriors. Yu Shimamura provided Zelda's voice in Skyward Sword and in the Japanese version of Breath of the Wild. For the English release of Breath of the Wild, Zelda was voiced by Patricia Summersett. Yu Shimamura and Patricia Summersett reprised their respective roles in Age of Calamity and Tears of the Kingdom.

Trivia[edit]

  • She is named after Zelda Fitzgerald (novelist and wife of novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald), as Shigeru Miyamoto liked her name.
  • Over the years, there have so far been two instances of a titular "Legend of Zelda", and each instance has involved a character who is implied to be the original Zelda. The backstory for Zelda II was referred to by Impa as the Legend of Zelda. The other instance is Skyward Sword, where developers referred to it as the true Legend of Zelda due to the revelations about Zelda in the game. However, the phrase is never used within the actual game aside from a joking reference when Groose refers to their adventures as the Legend of Groose.
  • Judging by the official timeline from the Hyrule Historia, there have so far been sixteen different incarnations of Zelda. Out of them, three of them have only been seen in picture form (from the backstories of The Minish Cap, The Wind Waker and Breath of the Wild), and only one (Tetra) goes by a different name. There have been five Zeldas in games taking place prior to the timeline split; the Defeated Timeline has four different Zeldas, the Child Timeline has two of them, and the Adult Timeline has three. Then there is Breath of the Wild, which is in an unknown timeline and has two princesses (one of whom is only part of the backstory).
  • Out of all of the games in the main series bearing the Legend of Zelda name, the only ones in which Zelda does not appear at all are Link's Awakening and Tri Force Heroes. There are still references to her in both games: in Link's Awakening, Marin mentions Zelda's name at the beginning, as apparently Link had said her name while waking up. In Tri Force Heroes, one of the available outfits for Link is the Legendary Dress, which is based on Zelda's wardrobe.
  • A picture in Hyrule Castle in The Wind Waker shows that one of the Zeldas (the one who was initially sent to the Great Sea) had a group of stewards very similar in appearance to Tetra's pirate crew.
  • The Zelda in Spirit Tracks is shown to have an acute fear of mice, and even when possessing a Phantom will freeze up when a rat is near.
  • According to Masahiro Sakurai on the official Brawl website, Sheik's appearance in Brawl was based on concept designs for Twilight Princess, indicating that Sheik was originally intended to make an appearance in the game at some point. This concept artwork was eventually shown in the Hyrule Historia.
  • A text dump of Super Smash Bros. Brawl listed two new fighters as Toon Zelda and Toon Sheik, though neither made the final cut of the game. These were most likely intended to be a cel-shaded clone of Zelda (as seen in The Wind Waker), though whether Toon Sheik referred to Tetra or a new Sheik design is unknown.
