Debut The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

Daltus is a king of Hyrule who presided during the events of The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap.

Background[edit]

Daltus was known for being an accomplished swordsman. When he was young, he competed in the Picori Festival tournament and fought to a draw with Smith. The two became lifelong friends and rivals. Years later, Daltus's daughter Zelda would befriend Smith's grandson Link. As king, he was also served by his loyal minister, Potho, who was assigned to oversee Princess Zelda's education.

During The Minish Cap, Daltus oversaw the awards ceremony for the sword-fighting tournament of the one hundredth Picori Festival. The champion Vaati proceeded to attack and broke the Picori Blade while opening the Bound Chest and releasing the evils within it. Daltus was knocked to the side during the ensuing chaos, and Zelda was turned into stone by Vaati's magic. In the aftermath, King Daltus kept Zelda's stone form in the throne room. Link joined them as he discussed their options with Smith and Potho. Daltus felt that the Picori Blade had the power to restore her, but it had been broken by Vaati. They would need to make contract with the Minish people in order to reforge it. Because the Minish only appeared to children, Daltus entrusted Link with this task. He also sent out his soldiers to search for Vaati and assigned Mutoh's carpenters to rebuild areas that were damaged by Vaati's attacks.

Vaati later attacked the king at a time when he was alone in his throne room (aside from the presence of his petrified daughter). Vaati used his shapeshifting powers to take on the king's from and used his authority to make Hyrule's forces seek out the light force for him. As for the real King Daltus, he was turned into stone and kept in a prison cell within the castle until Link was able to restore him using the Four Sword's magic. Daltus was impressed with how brave Link had grown. Although he felt that it should have been up to him to do something about Vaati due to his role as king, he recognized that he had grown too old and would only hold Link back. Daltus reluctantly left it all up to Link and the Four Sword, and he gave the boy a key to help him get further within the castle so that Zelda could be saved from Vaati. In the end, Link was successful in defeating Vaati and restoring Princess Zelda back to normal.
