Fado is a Kokiri who served as the Sage of Winds in the backstory of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

Background[edit]

Fado hailed from the Kokiri Forest and was described as having a "very saucy" personality. He was appointed the Sage of the Winds and offered prayers to strengthen the Master Sword at the Wind Sage by playing his violin. The king used to use the Wind Waker to conduct them as they made their songs. Fado was believed to be safe in Wind Temple even after the flood, but at some point he was killed by Ganondorf in order to weaken the Master Sword.

During The Wind Waker, his spirit appeared before Link at the entrance to the Wind Temple and taught him the Wind God's Aria. He asking Link to teach the song to his successor, who would be wielding an instrument identical to his own. This successor turned out to be Makar. Fado's spirit appeared to play along with Makar whenever he played the Wind God's Aria, strengthening the Master Sword again, and then his spirit disappeared.

Trivia[edit]

  • Fado may be named after a genre of Portuguese music using stringed instruments.
  • There are actually two other characters name Fado in the Zelda games (with this Fado actually being known as Fodo in Japan), one of whom is also a Kokiri. In Ocarina of Time, one of the inhabitants of Kokiri Forest was referred to as Fado in some official materials. In Twilight Princess , the name was used for a human who maintained the ranch by Ordon Village and was one of Link's friends.
  • Although Laruto's dialogue more clearly implies a blood relation between herself and Medli, this is not implied so much for Fado and Makar's relation, likely because Kokiri do not seem to be capable of reproduction.
