Saria is a Kokiri child who was featured as one of the Six Sages in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Background[edit]

Saria was a kind girl who lived in the Kokiri Forest and was one of Link's only friends during her time living there.. She often spent her time playing the ocarina in the Lost Woods, in the Sacred Meadow outside the Forest Temple. When Link left the Kokiri Forest, Saria confronted him with a sad farewell. As a going-away present, she gave him a Fairy Ocarina. Link could meet up with Saria later in the sacred forest meadow. At that time she taught him Saria's Song, which Link could play to communicate with her at any time. This was a song Saria only taught to her closest friends.

Over the seven years that Link was asleep in the Temple of Time, evil creatures emanated from the Forest Temple and attacked the Kokiri Forest. Saria eventually went into the Forest Temple to investigate, but she was imprisoned by Phantom Ganon. After Phantom Ganon was defeated by Link, Saria was freed and was awakened to her destiny as Sage of the Forest.

Saria remained in the Chamber of Sages, where she combined her power with that of the other Sages in order to create a bridge to Ganon's Tower and later imprison Ganon in the Sacred Realm. Saria traveled in the form of a green sprite to Death Mountain with four other sages in the ending, from whence they observed the celebrations occurring in Lon Lon Ranch.

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

  • In the Super Smash Bros. series, Saria has been represented as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and as an Ace-rank Support Spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. As a Spirit, her Support effect was to make it easier for the player character to perform a perfect shield. When fought in a Spirit battle, Saria's Spirit would possess Isabelle and fight alongside Young Link in an area covered in fog and with more powerful Final Smashes. In Adventure Mode, her Spirit was found in an area based on the Lost Woods, and defeating her unlocked the path to Young Link.

Other Media[edit]

  • Saria appeared in several chapters of the Ocarina of Time manga, which followed her role in the game. She also appeared in a two-part side chapter set before the main story involving a mask festival, and Link and Saria entering the Lost Woods.

Trivia[edit]

  • Saria is also the name of a town in Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. This naming scheme was done to increase a sense of history in the series, as it comes with the implication that the towns were named after the sages.
  • Her song was used to cheer Darunia, a fellow sage, at one point in the game. She is seen sitting on his shoulder in the ending.
  • Saria's image is seen on a stain glass window in the basement of Hyrule Castle in The Wind Waker, along with other stain glass windows portraying the other sages.
  • In the Breath of the Wild, a lake in the Great Hyrule Forest is named Lake Saria in reference to her.
  • A trophy of Saria appeared in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.
