Levias is a whale-like sky deity that was featured in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

Background[edit]

Little is known of Levias's origins, except that he was born "so long ago" and grew every year until he was the size of a small island. Levias was appointed by Hylia as the warden of the skies at some point before she left her divine form. His power was on equal ground with the Three Dragons who ruled over the land below. He was also given one-fourth of the Song of the Hero, which Hylia's chosen hero would one day need in order to reach the Triforce. The dragons knew the other three parts of the song. Levias was a wise and benevolent creature, despite his bulk, and he was also quite light-mannered for a deity. As the civilization of Skyloft formed within his domain, Levias watched over them from afar. He was most commonly found within a clouded area that he called his home. He was revered on some level by them and known having an encyclopedic knowledge of the world, but he was not mentioned as much as the goddess. Regardless, the staff of Pumpkin Landing made sure to bring him an offering of pumpkin soup annually. Levias had a deep love for this pumpkin soup, and it was left on a certain island that had a perpetual rainbow above it.

During the events of Skyward Sword, Levias was possessed by a parasite known as Bilocyte. The area where he lived became a dangerous Thunderhead, while Levias himself acted aggressively. When Link found out about this, he managed to bring over a large basin full of pumpkin soup to lure Levias into the open. Link was able to destroy Bilocyte and freed Levias. He thanked Link for the soup and apologized for his behavior while possessed. With his senses restored, Levias was able to see that Link was the chosen hero. He told Link about the Song of the Hero and promised to teach his part of it only after Link had learned the other three parts from the dragons. Link eventually returned with three-fourths of the song, and Levias finally sang his portion. He then sent Link along to use the Song to find the Triforce.

Trivia[edit]

  • Levias's name is based off of "leviathan", a name for a gargantuan creature from Hebrew mythology which has been associated with whales. It could also be connected to "levitas", the Latin word for "lightness" which is used in words associated with floating in the air, as it could reflect Levias's ability of flight and dominion over the sky.
  • Levias is nearly identical to the Wind Fish from Link's Awakening, and it is highly possible that they are the same creature or related in some way, with the main difference being some design deviations. He is also similar to Oshus, but they could be considered more as foils to each other, as Levias is warden of the skies while Oshus has dominion over the oceans.
  • He uniquely has facial hair, with a beard and a long mustache as well as a set of eyebrows.
  • The top of his head has a platform (possible a helmet of some kind) which Link can stably stand on (and must in the final phase of the Bilocyte battle).
  • Levias seems to be proud of his singing voice, although he will mention at one point that he has not sung in some time and says that he will try some vocal exercises before singing his part of the Song of the Hero.
  • In Breath of the Wild, an area overlooking Kakariko Village called the Pillars of Levia seems to named in reference to him.
  • Levias appears as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
