Oshus is a supporting character from The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. He is a wise old man who is actually the Ocean King, a deity of the oceans.
Background[edit]
The Ocean King was a deity who protected the oceans and was regarded as a figure of legend or myth. His true form was that of a large white whale. He was served by the three fairies Ciela (Spirit of Courage and Time), Leaf (Spirit of Wisdom) and Neri (Spirit of Power).
However, he was later targeted by Bellum, a giant squid-like creature that fed off of life force. Bellum was able to overpower the Ocean King and seal him away, similarly sealing away all three of his spirits. The Ocean King was able to survive by cloning himself a new body, that of an elderly human. He established a home on Mercay Island, which held the Temple of the Ocean King, and became known as a hermit called Oshus.
He used the Sand of Hours to create the Phantom Hourglass and began to investigate the Temple for clues on how to defeat Bellum, and he eventually met with Ciela, whom had also been able to clone herself and washed up onshore. However, Ciela had no memory and Oshus remained silent for the moment due to all the monsters appearing. Eventually a boy named Link came pursuing the Ghost Ship, which was actually under Bellum's control. Oshus did not reveal his true nature but warned him about the dangers of the Ghost Ship, only telling Link about the possibility of getting passage from Linebeck when he was insistent. Oshus also approved of Ciela's descison to accompany Link.
Link freed all of the spirits throughout the game, and Oshus eventually revealed his true role as well as the truth about Ciela. Linebeck was outraged at first to find out Oshus's identity because he wanted treasure, but Oshus promised to grant him one more wish if he continued to help Link. Eventually, Link was successful in destroying Bellum. At this point, Oshus returned to his true form and thanked Link. He also granted Linebeck's wish, which wound up being a simple wish for his ship back. Oshus then returned Link, Tetra and Linebeck to their world, implying that the area that the game had taken place in was a different world of some sort.
Trivia[edit]
- The name "Oshus" is simply a play on "ocean".
- He is strangely similar to the Wind Fish, as both of them are deities who resemble giant whales, and in both cases they wind up returning Link to the real world from a dream at the game's end (although Phantom Hourglass is only implied to be a dream in its ambiguous ending). He also resembles Levias from Skyward Sword, and the two could be considered as foils to each other, as Oshus has dominion over the oceans while Levias is described as the warden of the skies.
