Roy is a character from the Fire Emblem series who acts as the main protagonist of Fire Emblem: Fuuin no Tsurugi.

Background[edit]

Roy was the son of Eliwood, a skilled swordsman who was the marquess of Pherae. Roy's mother is unconfirmed; depending on the ending of Fire Emblem 7, his mother was either Lyn, Ninian or Florina and died prior to Fuuin no Tsurugi. A young Roy was seen in the epilogue of FE7, which was set fifteen years after that game. The epilogue depicted Eliwood visiting Hector, his friend and the marquess of Ostia. Roy was introduced to Hector's daughter, Lilina, and they became fast friends. Several years later, Roy was sent to Ostia to study for eventually becoming Pharae's new marquess, and he formed a stronger bond with Lilina at the same time.

When Roy was fifteen, Bern suddenly invaded and conquered the neighboring kingdoms. In order to prevent this from happening to the Lycian League, each province decided to send an army to defend the nation. Roy's father was ill, so Eliwood called Roy back from Ostia and told him to lead Pherae's army in his place, in the first chapter of Fire Emblem: Fuuin no Tsurugi.

On the way to Araphen, the province closest to Bern territory, Roy met Guinivere, a princess of Bern. She had run away from her home country in order to stop the imminent war between Lycia and Bern, and Roy's group decided to shelter her. Hector was killed in battle soon afterwards after being betrayed by the Marquess of Araphen. This prompted Roy to vow to protect Guinevere as well as Hector's daughter Lilina. His larger goal was to stop King Zephiel's plans for world conquest, which involved reviving dragons to wipe out humanity and rule the world in their place.

Roy was chosen to lead the Lycian League Army after Hector's death. He was successful in gaining aid from Etruria by appealing to his old mentor, Cecilia. They later wound up having to save Etruria from supporters of Zephiel, when they took over. Eventually, the decision was made to travel into Bern and end everything by battling Zephiel. Guinivere entrusted Roy with the Fire Emblem, which was needed to open the Shrine of Seals and gain one of the Divine Weapons, the Sword of Seals.

Possible Fates[edit]

In the twenty-second chapter, Roy attacked Zephiel's castle to stop his plan to allow dragons to take over the world and wipe out humanity. Zephiel was overcome and killed in the following battle. If the player did not collect all eight of the Divine Weapons, the game would end at this point.

If all eight of the weapons were found, Roy and his group pressed on in search of Idoun, the Dark Dragon that Zephiel had awakened. Roy eventually found her in the Dragon Temple. In the process he learned the dragons' side of the story and began to pity them and especially the Dark Dragon. If Roy struck the final blow on Idoun, instead of being killed she would be knocked out and sent to Arcadia, where the elder was able to restore her soul.

Roy returned to Pherae and rebuilt the areas in Lycia damaged by the war, rejecting positions in the courts of Bern and Etruria. Depending on whom he had A-rank support conversations with, Roy ended up marrying either Lilina, Cecilia, Sophia, Thany, Lalam or Sue. In his ending with Lilina, their marriage was used to unite the Lycian League into the Kingdom of Lycia.

Support Conversation Summaries[edit]

Roy is capable of Support conversations with ten other characters.

  • Lilina- Their first conversation has Roy asking how she is doing, and she assures him there is no need to worry. In their second conversation Lilina talks about the past when Roy came to Ostia three years prior and how much things have changed. In their final conversation Lilina apologizes for being nostalgic and the two promise to always be at eachother's side.
  • Marcus- Marcus complains about their fighters and their lack of skill, thinking that none of them can match up to Roy. He suggests stricter exercise plans to Roy and plans to expel those who aren't doing their job properly. But Roy rejects this idea, saying that most of his fighters were trying their best, and that it would be too hard to accurately judge who is or who isn't doing their jobs right. Roy tells Marcus that they have to trust the other troops, causing Marcus to see that Roy has grown to live independently, meaning that Marcus's role was almost over. Marcus than tells Roy that he has decided to retire soon, but Roy insists that Marcus stays longer and continues to help them.
  • Allen- In their first conversation, Allen finds Roy trying to work out a strategy for the battle. Allen volunteers to charge into their defenses, but Roy rejects the offer. In the following support Roy is still thinking out a strategy and Allen suggests a tactic that would result in casualties, which Roy does no want to do. In their final conversation Allen admits that he isn't sure there is a thing such as true victory with no casualties, but that he'll give Roy his full support.
  • Lance- In their first conversation Lance voices his concern for Roy's safety and in the subsequent conversation, confronts Roy about how it is unwise for him as the leader to position himself on the front lines. Roy explains that people wouldn't follow him if he didn't lead them directly into battle and says that perhaps he is a poor leader. In their final conversation, Lance tells Roy that perha
  • Wolt- Wolt greets Roy as "Master Roy", but Roy insists he just call him Roy since they grew up like brothers. Wolt insists that he still call him as such since he wishes to be a loyal servant. In the following conversation, Wolt is still addressing him formally and talks about being a loyal servant like Merlinus and Marcus, leaving Roy perturbed by the conversation. In the final conversation, Roy tells Wolt that there is someone in the army he is upset about and asks Wolt's advice about it. After settling the matter, Roy told Wolt it was him before taking off to engage in battle again.
  • Thany- In their first conversation, Roy gets advice from Thany about how to stay upbeat and not worry so much, but she replies to just eat well, sleep well, and laugh well. In their second conversation Roy asks Thany about her training and if her training is a hindrance, which she denies saying its great experience. In their final conversation, Roy invited Thany to come to Pherae after the war. After Roy leaves, Thany begins to wonder what the implications of being invited actually are.
  • Sue- Sue interrupts Roy while he is working on tactics and he is confused as to why when she tells him he won't be able to hear nature if he's stressed out. In the following conversation, Sue says that Roy has a better 'feel' to him now, to which Roy says that it's the first time he's seen her smile and that it has a good 'feel' to it. In the final conversation, Roy asks what she plans to do after the war. She says she plans to rebuilt the Kutoloh Clan, but he offers to let her come to Pherae if she wishes.
  • Lalam- Lalam has Roy follow her so she can show him her new dance, but is disheartened when he only says it's "very nice" and offers no other compliments. In the next conversation, Lalam is frightened by what she thinks is an enemy and professes her love for Roy while clinging to him desperately for protection. In the next conversation, Lalam wants to show him another dance, but he starts stepping back to dodge her. She accuses him of not liking her, which he says isn't true at all - much to her amusement.
  • Cecilia- Roy admits that he feels strange ordering Cecilia around on the battlefield, but she says he is the army's leader and he is supposed to do so. In the next conversation, Cecilia tries to get Roy to relax, but he says they have to keep moving or they will neglect the people in need. Roy apologizes for being so outspoken, but she says that he's becoming a great leader. In the last conversation, Roy tries to get her to come to Pherae, but she says she must rebuilt Etruria first. But she says that if he does need her, that she will come and assist him in whatever he needs.
  • Sophia- Sophia warns Roy of an ill omen and tries to get Roy to relax and not strain himself and stay out of the front lines, but he says that he trusts the others and he has to be fighting with them and not fearing injury. In the next conversation Sophia tries to apologize, but Roy instead thanks her by saying that thanks to her he was more careful and may have avoided serious harm as a result. She later tells him that her power of foretelling isn't that powerful, but Roy says he wants to see her smile more than he wants to use her power.

Super Smash Bros.[edit]

Roy appears as a playable fighter in several games of the Super Smash Bros. series, appearing as an unlockable character in Super Smash Bros. Melee, as a DLC character who can be purchased in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U (made available in June 2015) and in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He was left out of Super Smash Bros. Brawl in favor of including the more recent Ike, although data found within the game suggests that he was intended to return at some point in the game's development.

His moveset was largely a clone of Marth's, although he has been tweaked in his later appearances to make his gameplay more distinct. With his return appearances, he gained a Final Smash called Critical Hit, which is shared with several other Fire Emblem fighters and based on the critical hits that can be delivered in the games. He wears his Lord outfit in Melee and his Master Lord outfit in later appearances. In Ultimate, Chrom appears as his Echo Fighter.

In Melee, Roy was unlocked by completing 900 Vs. Mode matches or by completing Classic Mode with Marth. In Ultimate, he was unlocked through the game's variable-based system for unlocking characters or by awakening him in Adventure Mode (where he was found in the dimension known as The Final Battle, as one of the last champions under the control of Galeem).

In Ultimate, his Classic Mode route is called "A Journey of Swords" and has the theme of pitting Roy against other sword fighters. The boss of this route is Master Hand (joined by Crazy Hand on higher difficulties).

Trophies/Stickers/Spirits[edit]

Roy has also been represented by three unlockable trophies in Melee, a sticker in Brawl, two trophies (as well as a third for his Final Smash in the Wii U game) that can be unlocked after downloading his DLC in the 3DS/Wii U game and Fighter Spirit in Ultimate.

Other Media[edit]

  • Roy was featured in the Fire Emblem: Hasha no Tsurugi manga adaptation, although the manga actually focused on the manga-exclusive protagonist Al. Roy was introduced in a volume set at the Western Isles, where his army arrived to save Al's friends from enemies. Roy formed a strong friendship with Al after meeting him, and during the final battle they worked together against Zephiel. Zephiel initially held the Sword of Seals in this version, but Al was able to knock it out of his hands, at which point Roy was able to use it to kill Zephiel. This followed the ending in which Idoun was never found, as well as the ending in which he married Lilina.

Trivia[edit]

  • Roy was only included in Super Smash Bros. Melee to advertise Fire Emblem: Fuuin no Tsurugi in Japan. Originally, he wasn't going to be included in the American version of the game.
  • His original Smash appearances retained his Japanese voice instead of providing an English voice for him. It was not until Fire Emblem Heroes that he gained an English voice.
