Karen is one of the new members of Kanto and Johto's Elite Four appearing in Pokémon: Gold, Silver and Crystal. She is a specialist in Dark-type Pokémon.

Background

Karen preferred Dark-type Pokémon due to their wild and tough image, which appealed to her. She considered judging Pokémon by their strength to be a selfish perception and believed that skilled trainers should try to win with their favorites. She succeeded Lance to become the new leader of the Elite Four after he left. Lance later defeated them all to instead become the Pokémon League champion.

In Gold, Silver and Crystal, Karen was challenged and defeated by Gold. She commended Gold, saying that he understood what was important in raiding Pokémon, and then sent him to battle the champion.
