Magmar is a flame-covered Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. It originally had no evolutionary line, but it was later shown to evolve from the baby form Magby in the second generation games and into Magmortar in the fourth generation games.

Information[edit]

Magmar evolves from Magby at Level 30. They are born in the spout of an active volcano and usually found near volcanoes. Magmar always burns with an orange glow that allows it to hide among the flames, and its body gives off a wavering glow resembling that of the Sun. It cloaks its body in flame so that it often resembles a fireball, and because it dislikes cold places Magmar will use its flames to make environments more suitable for it.

Its body usually burns at about 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit. When it breathes deeply, heat waves form around its body which make it hard to see clearly. Magmar moves frequently in hot areas, and they can heal themselves by dipping their wounds into lava. They blow intensely hot flames everywhere in battle to intimidate their opponents, although these fiery bursts create heat waves which ignite nearby grass and trees. Magmar evolves into Magmortar when traded to another trainer while holding a Magmarizer.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Pokémon: Blue Version, Magmar was rarely found at the Pokémon Mansion. In LeafGreen, it instead rarely appeared outside Mt. Ember. In Gold, Silver, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Magmar could be found at Burned Tower. In Crystal, it instead appeared within Mt. Silver. In HeartGold/SoulSilver, Magmar was also found at the Safari Zone's Peak area.

In Platinum, Magmar appear uncommonly at the Fuego Ironworks and was more common in the morning and daytime.

Other Games[edit]

Several Magmar could be photographed at the Volcano area of Pokémon Snap and could be made to fight each other for a special fight by throwing a piece of food between two of them. In Pokémon Pinball, Magmar was caught at Cinnabar Island. Magmar also appeared in Pokémon Puzzle League as part of Blaine's three-Pokémon team. A Shadow Magmar could also be snagged from Cipher Peon Grupel at Citadark Isle, and after being purified it could be traded to any of the third generation color versions. It was also featured in the e-Reader short "Magmar and Magby", where a Magmar and Magby dueled each other using Firethrower attacks which was briefly stopped by Articuno freezing them, but they were able to break free and continue the duel.

In Pokémon Trozei!, Magmar could be found at Secret Storage 10 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, it was only obtained by evolving Magby while in Explorers of Time and Darkness it could be recruited at the second through seventh floors of Upper Steam Cave and the first seventeen basement floors of Lost Wilderness. In Pokémon Ranger, it appeared at Jungle Relic. Magmar also appeared in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia at Cargo Ship and Volcano Cave. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it was found at Oblivia Ruins and Fire Temple. Magmar also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Fiery Furnace.

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

  • In Super Smash Bros. Melee, a Magmar made a cameo appearance among a group of Pokémon seen in the game's intro sequence.

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, Magmar was first featured in a pair of episodes as one of Blaine's main Pokémon. It brutally beat Ash's Pikachu in the first match but ultimately was beaten by Charizard in the rematch. In the Johto series, Gary used a Magmar during the Silver Conference which wound up being beaten by Ash's Heracross. Paul also owned a Magmar that made several appearances before evolving into a Magmortar. Magmar have also made several other minor appearances throughout the series.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, two Magmar burned up the Pewter City museum in a Red/Green/Blue chapter. They were defeated by Red's Sandhshrew, and in an infamous moment Giovanni secretly had his Cloyster freeze and shatter them so they would not cause trouble. A different Magmar appeared in FireRed/LeafGreen belonging to a Biker who was trying to ransack Three Island, but Giovanni was able to beat it with ease.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name is a play on "magma", possibly combined with "mar" (meaning to spoil, which Magmar seems to do to plant life around it).
