Olivia is a Pokémon trainer who was featured as an opponent in Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. She is one of the four Island Kahunas of the Alola region, being the kahuna of Akala Island, and she also acted as one of the inaugural members of its Elite Four. She specializes in Rock-type Pokémon and holds the Rock-type Z-Crystal, Rockium Z.

Background[edit]

Olivia was a Pokémon trainer who lived at Konikoni City on Akala Island. Her home was in the upper floor of a shop that she ran, which sold jewelry and stones as well as fossils. She was chosen by Tapu Lele to act as the island kahuna of Akala. In turn, she appointed three trial captains for the island: Lana, Kiawe and Mallow. She was generally a friendly woman, though she could also be playful and tended to tease Professor Kukui about his constant state of shirtlessness. Olivia liked to treat trial-goers as her own children, and she insisted that she was an average woman despite her status.

Within Sun/Moon/Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, Olivia was first seen greeting Elio/Selene and the others at Heahea City upon their arrival on the island, while accompanied by Mallow. She was then found in the Diglett's Tunnel, where she helped members of the Aether Foundation to keep the local Diglett under control, and she barred access through the tunnel while this effort was underway. It was only clear after Elio/Selene completed each of the captains' challenges, and Olivia then encouraged them to challenge her at Konikoni City. By the time that the player arrived there, Olivia had been summoned to Tapu Lele's Ruins of Life by the tapu itself in order to clean the ruins, and she left a note with her Probopass mentioning her whereabouts.

Elio/Selene soon met her at the Ruins, and it was only then that she learned the trainer's name. Elio/Selene then cleared the grand trial by defeating Olivia in battle. After being defeated, she gave the trainer Rockium Z and taught them the accompanying pose. She also placed the Akala Stamp in Elio/Selene's passport as proof that they had cleared the island's challenge. She then got to known Lillie and Nebby. Olivia started to escort them back to town, but they were soon encountered by Hau, who had come to challenge Olivia and also to tell Elio/Selene about an invitation from the Aether Foundation. Olivia then stayed behind to accept Hau's challenge, and Lillie stayed to spectate. Hau ultimately earned his Akala Stamp as well. Later in the game, when the Ultra Beasts surfaced along with Necrozma, Olivia was briefly seen facing with with one of the Ultra Beasts (Buzzwole in Ultra Sun or Pheromosa in Ultra Moon) by the Ruins of Life.

During the island challenge, Professor Kukui also established Alola's own Pokémon League. Olivia ended up joining this League and acted as part of the Elite Four, based within a Rock Chamber. There, Elio/Selene battled her again and defeated her during their challenge of the League. After Elio/Selene became champion, Olivia was seen attending the celebrations that were held at Iki Town on Melemele Island. She could also be challenged to rematches at the Pokémon League.

Pokémon Roster[edit]

Olivia's Pokémon roster differs depending on the version.

  • Nosepass/Probopass: She uses Nosepass only for the grand trial battle in Sun/Moon. In all versions, she only uses Probopass during Elite Four battles.
  • Boldore/Gigalith: She uses Boldore only for the grand trial battle in Sun/Moon, and she only uses Gigalith for Elite Four battles in Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon. This marks the one odd instance where she uses the different stages of an evolutionary line exclusively in alternate versions.
  • Anorith/Armaldo: She uses this Pokémon only in the Ultra games, with Anorith being used in the grand trial battle and Armaldo in Elite Four battles.
  • Lileep/Cradily: She uses this Pokémon only in the Ultra games, with Lileep only beng used in the grand trial battle and Cradily in Elite Four battles.
  • Lycanroc: Her Lycanroc is Midnight Form. It holds Rockium Z and is the only Pokémon that she uses for all battles in all versions.

The following Pokémon are all only used for the Elite Four battles in Sun/Moon:

She also has another Probopass that is left at the store while she is out, as well as a [[Stufful] in her room (and various stuffed Stufful).

In Other Pokémon Games[edit]

In Pokémon Masters EX, Olivia appears with her Midnight Form Lycanroc as a playable sync pair that could be unlocked at random through the game's Sync Pair Scout feature. Carbink could also be unlocked as an alternate sync partner for her by spending Battle Points starting at the end of August 2023. When fought as an opponent, she sometimes paired up with Alolan Golem or Probopass instead. Olivia has also made minor appearances in several in-game events, such as in the "Family Ties" Story Event, or where was suspicious of Lusamine's Pheromosa, or in the "Battle Buffet Bash" prestige event, where she helped Mallow to present a Trial Z-Set Special at the younger girl's Super Food Stall. In the "Trials on the Isle" Story Event, she showed up with fellow kahunas Nanu and Hapu to act as opponents as part of Mallow's trial. Olivia also played a role in the Alola chapter of the Villain Arc, where she helped deal with the Ultra Beast outbreak. She gave Acerola and Lana traditional clothes that would act as Sygna Suits for their Pokémon and gave the captains something to heal their Pokémon. Olivia also appeared as an opponent for the Alola Challenge of the Champion Stadium mode, reflecting her role as a member of the Elite Four.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, Olivia made recurring appearances during the Sun/Moon-based episodes. She oversaw the trainers' trials on Akala Island, and Ash defeated her in a grand trial to earn Rockium Z. She also met Brock during one of his guest appearances. The two seemed to share a mutual infatuation with each other. They battled each other and then teamed up to defeat Team Rocket.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, she appeared during the Sun/Moon arc. She was seen making decisions with the other kahunas and also took part in a battle against Nanu. Throughout the arc, the kahunas and island captains worked together to help the tapus and to fend off the Ultra Beasts.

Trivia[edit]

  • Her English name seems to be derived from "Alyxia olivformis", a name for a type of flowering plant found in Hawaii, and it may also double as a reference to the mineral called "olivine". In Japan, she is named Lychee, after a fruit-bearing tropical tree.
  • Mallow claims that Olivia always finds her food to be delicious. She indeed seems to be enjoying Mallow's cooking in a photo seen during the games' credits.
  • She is the only character to be both a kahuna and Elite Four member in Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon.
  • She keeps her Pokémon in Ultra Balls.
