Bosses[edit]

Notably, the bosses of the game are all referred to as Nightmares. They are the ones responsible for keeping the Wind Fish trapped in his sleep and seek to rule over the dream world.

Moldorm[edit]

The Moldorm is the boss of the Tail Cave. It actually speaks, calling Link an outsider (but pronouncing s's as z's). It is battled similarly to the fight in A Link to the Past. It crawls wildly around the stage and can knock Link off of the ledge, at which point he will have to climb up and restart the battle. Link must attack its tail with his sword until it is destroyed.

Genie[edit]

The Genie is the boss of the Bottle Grotto, and is protected within his magical lamp. He is arrogant and taunts Link about the apparent invulnerability it grants him. The Genie himself attacks with fireballs and illusions. At first during the battle, the genie's lamp will hop around. Link must stop the hopping lamp with his sword and then use the Power Bracelets to toss it against the wall, at which point the Genie emerges to attack Link before retreating back into its bottle. After being tossed against the wall three times, the bottle will shatter, at which point the Genie will be free and attack Link more directly. After being hit enough times with Link's sword, the Genie is destroyed.

Slime Eye[edit]

Slime Eye (known in Japan as the Degu Zol, implying it is a boss version of the Zol) is a giant gelatinous eyeball that serves as the boss of the Key Cavern. At first he is hidden on the ceiling and taunts Link childishly saying that Link cannot find him. However, by running into the wall with the Pegasus Boots, Link can shake Slime Eye into falling to the ground. Slime Eye must be defeated by repeatedly running into him with the Pegasus Boots while wielding the sword. This will cause Slime Eye to slowly split into smaller halves, which are eventually destroyed.

Angler Fish[edit]

The Angler Fish is the boss of the Angler's Tunnel and the first aquatic boss of the series. It is, as its name says, a giant angler fish. It attacks by dashing forward, knocking debris down from the cave and releasing smaller versions of itself called Angler Fries to attack Link. Link must defeat this fish by repeatedly attacking the bulb hanging from its head.

An Angler Fish also appears in The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages as a miniboss in Jabu-Jabu's Belly

Slime Eel[edit]

Slime Eel is the boss of the Catfish's Maw. This enemy can also speak, although it slurs its s's. Like Moldorm, it calls Link an outsider and specifically because he is from the real world. It taunts Link for not knowing the secret of Koholint Island being part of the Wind Fish's dream.

The Slime Eel is a segmented eel that will appear from one of four holes in the room. It will also spin its spiked tail around from a hole in the center in an attempt to attack Link. To defeat it, when it emerges Link must reel it in with the Hookshot until one segment containing its heart is revealed, which Link could then attack. A second fake Slime Eel also will appear and will explode if Link reels that one in.

Facade[edit]

Facade is faced at the end of the Face Shrine. It begins to tell Link its weakness, only to stop and realize that it talks too much. It also attempts to stop Link by telling him that if he is successful in awakening the Wind Fish, everything on Koholint will cease to exist. It is a mysterious enemy that appears as a grin on the ground. It attacks by sending flying tiles and jars at Link as well as creating holes in the ground, before revealing its face. It is then that Link can exploit Facade's weakness by planting bombs on its "face" until it is destroyed.

Facade later appears as a miniboss in The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons.

Evil Eagle[edit]

The Evil Eagle (referred to as an Albatross in the Japanese version) is the boss of the Eagle's Tower. It is a large bird and is different from other bosses in that it is actually ridden by the defeated miniboss of the dungeon, the Grim Creeper. Link battles the Eagle at the top of the tower in a side-scrolling battle. The eagle flies back and forth, and it also fires feathers and gusts of wind at Link. As in the battle with Moldorm, if Link falls from the tower, he will have to reclimb the tower and restart the battle. The Eagle must be destroyed by repeatedly attacking it with a projectile weapon, or with Link's sword when it flies closer to Link.

Hot Head[edit]

The Hot Head is a giant flaming head which acts as the boss of Turtle Rock. It is determined to prevent Link from using the Instruments of the Sirens to awaken the Wind Fish. The Hot Head leaps out of and back into lava which restores its health while blasting fireballs at Link. Link can defeat it by repeatedly attacking it with the Magic Rod.

Hardhit Beetle[edit]

The Hardhit Bettle is a the boss of the optional Color Dungeon, which is only present in the Game Boy Color and Switch remakes of the game. It is a giant Hardhat Beetle that starts off with a blue helmet. It must be hit continuously, which will cause the color of its helmet to change to red and make it vulnerbale to attack. In the Switch version, cracks also appear on its shell. The Hardhit Beetle will gradually recover from its wounds, so it must be attacked constantly in order to destroy it.

DethI[edit]

The final boss living within the Wind Fish's Egg. Referring to himself in a plural sense, DethI claims to have been born of nightmares and wants to keep the Wind Fish asleep so that the Nightmares could rule over the dream world, a plan foiled by Link's interference. DethI alternates between a variety of forms before admitting defeat. In the Switch version, the shadow is seem emerging from Link before forming.

  • Shadow Gel - The first form is a giant blob. It is defeated simply by sprinkling it three times with magic powder. Although its American name suggests it is a type of gel, the Japanese name, Shadow Bot, instead implies that it is a giant version of the Bot enemy from Zelda II.
  • Aganhim's Shadow - This form resembles and has the attack pattern of Aganhim from A Link to the Past. As with the Aganhim of that game, the shadow must be defeated by deflecting his magic balls back at him. His blasts can be deflected with the shovel instead of the sword, continuing the apparent tradition of odd items being able to reflect the magic blasts. In the Switch version, the Shadow also uses Aganhim's undeflectable attack from A Link to the Past.
  • Moldorm's Shadow - A shadowy version of the Moldorm boss. It is beaten in the same manner as the real Moldorm.
  • Ganon's Shadow - This shadow resembles Ganon as seen in the final battle of A Link to the Past. He will spin his trident around and summon flaming Keese to attack Link. Link must defeat him by continuously using the Pegasus Boots to run into him with his sword.
  • Lanmola's Shadow - The last of the shadows, this creature is supposed to be a Lanmola but roves around on the ground instead of burrowing underground in a way that is more evocative of the original Lanmola from The Legend of Zelda. This form is being known for taking only one hit from the Magic Rod to destroy.
  • DethI's true (and final) form is a dark orb-like body known for its resemblance to Vaati. It has two segmented arms that it swings around, and they must be jumped over to avoid being damaged. DethI must be defeated by firing arrows into his eye whenever it is open. It can also be destroyed by a single hit to the eye from the boomerang item.

Mini-Bosses[edit]

  • Rolling Bones
    • Rolling Bones is the miniboss of the Tail Cave who also appears as a miniboss later on in Turtle Rock. He is a strange hopping creature with an angler fish-like stalk from his head. He attacks by shoving a spiked pillar as (which is as wide as the room he's in) across the room. To defeat him, Link must use the Roc's Feather to leave over the pillar and then attack him with his sword until he is destroyed.
  • Great Moblin
    • The Great Moblin is the leader of the Moblins who captures BowWow and thinks Link is an assassin sent by Madam Meowmeow. He resides in the Moblin's Cave, which is located near Mabe Village and is not an actual dungeon. He attacks by rushing at Link. If Link dodges, he will run into a wall and stun himself, at which point Link can attack him.
  • Hinox
    • This cyclopean enemy appears as a miniboss in Bottle Grotto, the Eagle's Tower and Turtle Rock. The Hinox will toss bombs as well as attempt to pick up Link and toss him. Another hazard is that the room he is battled in has several cracked areas in the floor that will give away if Link stands on them for too long. He must be taken down with attacks from the sword, hookshot or Magic Rod.
  • Dodongo Snakes
    • The Dodongo Snakes appear as minibosses in the Key Cavern, the Face Shrine and Turtle Rock. They are black segmented creatures who are named due to having similar actions and weaknesses to the Dodongos faced in The Legend of Zelda. They do not attack Link directly and only slither around the room in random directions. To defeat them, Link must plant bombs in their paths to trick them into eating the bombs. Three bombs will destroy one snake.
  • Lanmola
    • A single Lanmola appears in the desert. Its attack pattern is identical to the ones in A Link to the Past in that it jumps out from the desert sands repeatedly, although this time the twist is that the battle takes place in an area of quicksand. After being destroyed, the Lanmola leaves behind the Angler Key.
  • Cue Ball
    • The Cue Ball is a large creature resembling a giant version of the Fire Cephalopods found in Turtle Rock within the game. It is the miniboss of the Angler's Tunnel, and it propels itself around the room through shallow water. To defeat it, Link must go around behind it and repeatedly attack its back. Oddly enough, this battle seems to be reinacted in 3-D in the form of the Big Octo miniboss battle in Ocarina of Time.
  • Gohmas
    • The Gohmas act as the miniboss of the Catfish's Maw. There are two of them, and they are defeated in a similar manner to past games in that they must be attacked in the eye when it is open.
  • Armos Knight
    • The Armos Knight is the miniboss faced at the Southern Face Shrine. It stops around in an attempt to stun Link. It is vulnerable to Link's bows and will leave behind the key to the Face Shrine when defeated.
  • Smasher
    • The Smasher is a mouse-like creature that appears as a miniboss in the Face Shrine and Turtle Rock. The Smasher attacks by lifting a giant ball and trying to toss it at Link. To defeat it, Link must use the Power Bracelets to toss the ball back at the Smasher until it is destroyed. This enemy later reappears in the Crown Dungeon of Oracle of Ages.
  • Grim Creeper
    • The Grim Creeper, known as Piccolo in the Japanese version due to the instrument he plays, is a skull-headed humanoid creature who acts as the miniboss of the Eagle's Tower and also controls the dungeon's actual boss, the Evil Eagle, which makes him the true master of the dungeon, although he never attacks directly. To attack Link he summons a group of six Big Keese which he calls his brothers. Link must destroy all six before they fly offscreen or he will have to repeat the battle. He then escapes to the top of the tower, where he rides the Evil Eagle in the battle with Link. After being defeated, he says that his energy is lost, but warns Link that he will also die if the Wind Fish is awakened.
  • Blaino
    • Blaino is a small monster who fights with large boxing gloves that he wears, acting as the miniboss of Turtle Rock. He both punches and blocks, and in addition he has a special punch that can send Link flying back to the dungeon's entrance. He must be defeated with the sword, with the Roc's Feather to dodge his blows. Blaino later makes an appearance in Oracle of Seasons.
  • Stone Hinox
    • The Stone Hinox is a miniboss of the Color Dungeon. It is a large stone figure that uses the same attack pattern of the Hinox. In addition, it can cause rocks to fall down from the ceiling, and the room it is battled within is filled with spikes.
  • Giant Buzz Blob
    • A giant version of the Buzz Blob enemy acts as the second miniboss of the Color Dungeon. It will fire bolts of lightning at Link, but can be defeated by repeatedly sprinkling magic powder on it.
