Moblins are a recurring enemy from the The Legend of Zelda series. They are a race of brutish creatures, typically with heads resembling pigs or bulldogs.

Information[edit]

One of the most common creatures in the land of Hyrule. Moblins are large creatures and typically are taller than Hylians. Their appearance tends to vary between two basic types of a Bulldog and a Pig. These two types of Moblins tend to not appear together except with a few exceptions. Moblins are typically minions of Ganon. They are proficient with a variety of weapons. They have been most commonly seen wielding spears, but are known to use other weapons, such as bows or swords.

Not all of them are known to be hostile. In The Legend of Zelda, some Moblins hid in caves and paid Link to keep their hiding place a secret. There was also one sidquest in The Wind Waker in which Maggie exchanged love letters with one of her captors from the Forbidden Fortress, a Moblin named Moe.

Appearances[edit]

In The Legend of Zelda and The Adventure of Link, Moblins come in the bulldog variety. They are typically found outside of dungeons in forested areas. The orange ones are the weaker version, whereas the blue are stronger. Both kinds are able to throw an unlimited number of spears as a means of attack. In A Link to the Past, Moblins are pig-faced creatures that appear only in the Dark World. The normal variety are armed with spears, but armored Moblins carry tridents and shields.

In Link's Awakening and both Oracles games, Moblins appear as both pigs and bulldogs. In the former, there is King Moblin (bulldog) who captures Bow Wow. In the latter games, the Great Moblin (pig) tries to stop Link a number of times.

In Ocarina of Time, the Moblins come in bulldog form. They are found only outside the Forest Temple while Link is an adult. One large Moblin is armed with a club and is able to cause shockwaves in the ground with it. In Four Swords and The Minish Cap, Moblins come in the pig variety. In the former they often wield bows, whereas they only use spears in the latter.

In The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Moblins are the muscle for Ganon's forces. They often carry lanterns and patrol the Forsaken Fortress and dark areas for intruders. They carry Skull Necklaces, which can be stolen. Their spears can also be used after they are defeated. Within Skyward Sword, Moblins appear as rare and advanced enemies. They are red and pig-like, and they are depicted with immense girth. Each Moblin wields a shield and spear. Wooden shields can be cut up with sword attacks, but this will enrage the Moblin into attacking more fiercely. Other Moblins have iron shields which Link has to jump over in order to attack it from behind.

Moblins also appeared in A Link Between Worlds and Tri Force Heroes, where they were identical to the versions that appeared in A Link to the Past.

In Breath of the Wild, they appeared with a new design, where they had boar-like faces but with leaner and taller bodies. They appeared in various areas of Hyrule and were usually armed with some variation of a Moblin Club or Spear, or bows, and they would also sometimes pick up Bokoblins to throw as weapons. They came in a number of varieties. From weakest to strongest, there were Blue, Black and Silver Moblins, as well as even more powerful Golden Moblins in Master Mode. Skeletal undead versions of Moblins could also appear at night, and they were known as Stalmoblins.

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

  • In the Super Smash Bros. series, Moblins have been represented as a sticker in Super Smash Bros. Brawl (using art from The Wind Waker) and as a Primary Spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (using art from Ocarina of Time). When fought in Spirit battles, the Moblin's Spirit would possess a team of four Dedede duplicates with reduced move speed and a focus on Dedede's Jet Hammer attack.
  • In Nintendo Land, two variations of Moblins appeared as enemies within The Legend of Zelda: Battle Quest. They were Shield Moblins and Helmet Moblins, as well as Big Moblins that acted as bosses. These Moblins were pig-faced and featured a different-looking, smaller design than other incarnations of Moblins.
  • Moblins were included among the enemy forces in Hyrule Warriors, based on their Skyward Sword appearance.
  • In Cadence of Hyrule, Moblins appeared as enemies. Based on their designs from Skyward Sword, they attacked by throwing spears or by thrusting at the player. There were several differently colored varieties of Moblins, denoting their levels of strength.

Trivia[edit]

  • In the Legend of Zelda manual, Moblin was misspelled as "Molblin".
  • Moblin gets its name from 'Goblin', a popular creature of myth and fantasy, combined with the Japanese word for "forest", which is one of their most common habitats. In Zelda Game & Watch, the manual actually names them Goblins instead of Moblin.
  • In Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, there is a type of enemy known as Oinkers. They are somewhat similar to Moblins in their pig-like appearance, but their snouts are more pronounced and some are capable of magic.
