Ivysaur is a second evolution Pokémon that first appeared in Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, FireRed and LeafGreen Versions.

Information

Ivysaur evolves from a Bulbasaur at level 16 (or later). The transition enlarges the bulb on its back, which begins to sprout into a flower bud. This changes the Ivysaur to a quadruped, as it is lacks the ability to stand on its hind legs like in its previous evolution. The bud on its back gives off an aroma as it prepares to fully blossom. Ivysaur will often lie in the sun absorbing energy from the sun to build its strength and to grow the bud on its back. Once the bud blossoms into a flower, it will evolve into a Venusaur at level 32.

The Ivysaur is notable for being the only one of the three second evolution starters that evolves first (Charmeleon and Wartortle evolve at level 36). However, with all evolutions this means it takes longer to learn certain moves that Ivysaur can learn earlier without evolving. The natural habitat of Ivysaurs is unknown, as they are largely only found in captivity.

Appearances

Ivysaur is not obtainable in any game, but can be evolved from the Bulbasaur that is one of three optional starter Pokémon offered by Professor Oak in the Red, Green, Blue, FireRed and LeafGreen versions or the one given away in the Pokémon: Yellow Version.

In-Game Information

Gen Game Pokédex entry
I Red When the bulb on its back grows large, it appears to lose the ability to stand on its hind legs.
Blue
Yellow The bulb on its back grows by drawing energy. It gives off an aroma when it is ready to bloom.
Stadium The bud on its back apparently draws energy from its body. The bud is said to open into a large flower when fully grown.
II Gold Exposure to sunlight adds to its strength. Sunlight also makes the bud on its back grow larger.
Silver If the bud on its back starts to smell sweet, it is evidence that the large flower will soon bloom.
Crystal The bulb on its back grows as it absorbs nutrients. The bulb gives off a pleasant aroma when it blooms.
III Ruby There is a bud on this Pokémon's back. To support its weight, Ivysaur's legs and trunk grow thick and strong. If it starts spending more time lying in the sunlight, it's a sign that the bud will bloom into a large flower soon.
Sapphire There is a bud on this Pokémon's back. To support its weight, Ivysaur's legs and trunk grow thick and strong. If it starts spending more time lying in the sunlight, it's a sign that the bud will bloom into a large flower soon.
Emerald To support its bulb, Ivysaur's legs grow sturdy. If it spends more time lying in the sunlight, the bud will soon bloom into a large flower.
FireRed There is a plant bulb on its back. When it absorbs nutrients, the bulb is said to blossom into a large flower.
LeafGreen When the bulb on its back grows large, it appears to lose the ability to stand on its hind legs.

Other Appearances

Video Games

  • In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Ivysaur makes its Smash debut as a playable character. It is part of a three-Pokémon team composed of itself, Squirtle, and Charizard that are commanded by Pokémon Trainer. Ivysaur is unique as being the only other second-evolution Pokemon playable (Pikachu being the other) and the only quadruped of the entire Smash Bros. lineup. Ivysaur has a trophy which is unlocked by having Ivysaur deliver the final blow to Master Hand in a Classic Mode playthrough. Within "The Subspace Emissary", Ivysaur is one of the two missing Pokémon sought by the Pokémon Trainer. The Ivysaur is ultimately found in the middle of the ruins in trophy form, where the Pokémon Trainer immediately catches it, at which point Ivysaur becomes playable in that mode.
