Clemont is a Gym Leader of the Kalos region who appears as an opponent in Pokémon X and Y. He is the fifth Gym Leader who has to be battled in the game and specializes in Electric-type Pokémon.

Background[edit]

Clemont was a young genius inventor who lived in Lumiose City. He was known to have created many inventions including Super Training and the lighting system for Prism Tower. One child claimed that many of his inventions did not work, but Clemont seemed to be under the impression that every invention of his worked perfectly. As a Gym Leader, he held the Voltage Badge, and his Pokémon Gym was also located within Prism Tower. There, his sister Bonnie helped him by subjecting challengers to quizzes as a test. She took Clemont's losses harder than Clemont himself, and he would sometimes get frustrated when she beat him to things that he wanted to say.

Within X/Y, Prism Tower was initially inaccessible due to a power outage in Lumiose City (which was actually caused by Team Flare siphoning energy from the nearby power plant). At some point, the siblings befriended Shauna, and Clemont gave her a device that could help her solve puzzles. After power was restored to the city, Clemont and Bonnie were seen at the lighting ceremony, where he activated Prism Tower's lighting system. He was then challenged and defeated by Calem/Serena. He acknowledged his loss by giving the trainer the Voltage Badge and TM 24: Thunderbolt. Clemont took his loss in stride, as he saw it as an opportunity to learn something new. He also claimed that he did not want to make himself stronger, and that all he actually wanted to live each day to its fullest with his Pokémon and to express his love of science through his inventions.

When talked to after beating the Elite Four, he expressed curiosity about how the world looked after defeating a champion, and he claimed that he would invent a device that would allow him to see how the world looks to a true Pokémon Champion. Clemont could also appear at the Battle Chateau for rematches after the player had obtained the rank of Marquis/Marchioness, as he held the title of Marquis there himself.

Pokémon Roster[edit]

At the Battle Chateau, he uses only Magneton/Magnezon and Heliolisk.

In Other Pokémon Games[edit]

In Pokémon Masters EX, Clemont and his Heliolisk appeared as a playable sync pair that could be recruited at random through the game's Sync Pair Scout feature after being added to the game in April 2020. It was also possible to obtain Magneton as an alternate sync partner for Clemont through Battle Points, starting August 2022. Within the Main Story's PML Arc, he was featured in Chapter 26. It was shown that he, Sophocles and Molayne were working together to help Professor Belis with her research. In order to help the player to find a powerful opponent to train with, they tried using their new invention called the Sync Pair Pinger which was designed to detect and attract strong sync pairs. It did not seem to be working right, as it attracted various trainers who were not up to par. Molayne then convinced Clemont and Sophocles that the machine was actually reacting to the three of them, and so they took on Scottie/Bettie's team in a battle, although Molayne admitted afterwards that their Pokémon were not reacting to the machine and were merely excited from watching Scottie/Bettie's battles. Afterwards, Blue was drawn in, which left the group confused about whether their machine truly worked or not. Clemont also appeared in the "The Eccentric Electrician" Story Event, where he met Volkner and took part in a battle with him alongside Scottie/Bettie. Clemont and Volkner bonded over their affinities for Electric-type Pokémon and machines. Clemont, Sophocles, Molayne and Volkner would end up collaborating more on projects related to science and machinery. The four of them deactivated Lysandre's weapon in the "Give and Take" Legendary Event, and they were courted by Rose to support him and make inventions based on sync stones for him in the Kalos chapter of the Main Story's Villain Arc, but that latter project ultimately fell through due to restrictions Rose wanted to place on their work. He also fought on a team with Elesa and Volkner during the "Pasio Friendiversary" Story Event, but they were defeated by Skyla's team.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, Clemont was featured as one of Ash's traveling companions during the X/Y-inspired series, along with Bonnie. Clemont had been ousted from his gym by a robot that he had created named Clembot, and he followed Ash in hopes of becoming a better Gym Leader. He initially kept his status a secret, until his father (Meyer, a character created for the anime) revealed it. Clemont later reclaimed his gym from Clembot and had his gym battle with Ash after Ash earned four gym badges, which Ash won. Throughout the series, he was also known for having a number of inventions that exploded and ended up dragging his sister away whenever she tried to flirt with guys. He and Bonnie also befriended a Zygarde Core they called Squishy. During the final arc of the series, he worked with Clembot to save Lumiose Gym from Team Flare, which resulted in Clembot sacrificing itself. In the end, Clemont resumed his duties as Gym Leader with renewed confidence and a new Clembot. Clemont returned in several episodes of the Pokémon Journeys series, where he was reunited with Ash and helped him with teaching the Meteor Assault move to his Sirfetch'd. He spectated some of the final battles of the World Coronation Series and was shown to be sour about a loss he suffered at Drasna's hands.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Clemont appeared during the X/Y arc, where he helped in the effort against Team Flare. At one point, he was kidnapped and forced to help construct a machine for Xerosic. He ended up helping the group to find Team Flare's hidden base at Geosenge Town and also found missing Pokémon of Shauna and Trevor.

Trivia[edit]

  • His Japanese name is 'Citron', in reference to the French word for lemon, which could also reference a lemon battery. His English name of 'Clemont' is more directly taken from the word 'lemon'.
  • If he wins a match at the Battle Chateau, he will credit his victory to a machine called the "Trainer-Grow-Stronger Machine, Mach 2".
  • According to the Gym Freaks program, Clemont is secretly saving up money to travel to an amusement park in Unova (likely in reference to Nimbasa City). This is referenced in Pokémon Masters, where Clemont cites that statement as the type of "boring answer" that he gives when interviewed.
  • Gym Freaks also claims that Clemont is bad at running and is working on an invention that would allow him to run faster.
  • In Pokémon: Sun and Moon, it is indicated that he helped to create the Rotom Pokédex. Samson Oak mentions that it was "a young fellow from Kalos" who helped to invent it, and Clemont is also seen in concept art for the Rotom Pokédex. This is also indicated in the Pokémon Adventures manga, where it was specifically said that "Kalos's famous genius inventor" helped to make it.
