Rotom is a unique Pokémon composed of plasma that was introduced in the fourth generation games. It has no evolutionary line, but it has five alternate forms which were introduced in Pokémon: Platinum Version.

Information[edit]

Rotom has a body composed of plasma, resembling electricity. Research continues on this mysterious Pokémon, which seems to have been discovered (or at least named) by Charon. Rotom is believed to be the power source of a unique motor. It already has the ability to enter various electrical devices and possess them. Rotom can possess one electrical motor at a time, which causes it to take on a new form. Although Rotom can stay inside a motor possibly indefinitely, it will leave and resume its normal form under certain conditions (particularly gameplay ones such as being brought to a Day Care or a Wi-Fi/Union Room).

Rotom has a total of five known forms that can be assumed within the games. Rotom's form can be changed only in a special room which contains all of the appliances which Rotom can possess; these rooms have been hidden within every version since the introduction of the multiple forms. Each form is associated with a different type, and Rotom will learn moves of that type when in that form. However, Rotom will regain its original moves when it reverts to its original form. In addition, while Rotom's actual type originally stayed the same from form to form in the fourth generation, the fifth generation changed it so that Rotom's second type would switch to the type matching the current form (while retaining its original type, Electric).

  • Heat Rotom - Microwave oven (Fire type)
  • Wash Rotom - Washing machine (Water type)
  • Frost Rotom - Refrigerator (Ice type)
  • Fan Rotom - Electric fan (Flying type)
  • Mow Rotom - Lawnmower (Grass type)

Additionally, although it is not an official form, Charon mentioned that his Rotom once possessed his toy robot.

Charon was associated with Rotom, since he discovered and befriended one as a child, and he spent most of his life studying it. He apparently kept most of his research quiet, so that he could became famous after he felt that had learned enough about it. Charon and the Rotom were close friends, although Charon never actually caught it, and the Rotom ran away at one point after Charon startled it. They later made up, and they were able to hug after Rotom possessed Charon's favorite toy robot. It is unknown whether or not Charon was still associated with the Rotom in any way during his adult years and specifically during his time with Team Galactic.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Pokémon: Diamond, Pearl and Platinum Versions, Rotom was found in the television at the Old Chateau's bedroom and only appeared at night. It could be encountered upon the first visit in Platinum, but in Diamond/Pearl it would only appear after the National Pokédex was unlocked. In Platinum, Rotom could change its form only within a hidden room of Team Galactic's Eterna Building, which was unlocked with the Secret Key (which was only distributed over Wi-Fi for a limited time around the game was released).

In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Rotom could not be obtained, but after trading a Rotom over (and setting it as the partner Pokémon), the Rotom could active the broken elevator in Silph Co. This grants access to the Rotom room for those versions. In Black and White, Rotom could be obtained by trading a Ditto to a researcher at Route 15. Its form could be changed using appliances found in cardboard boxes in the back room of Shopping Mall Nine.

Other Games[edit]

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness, Rotom could be recruited at the tenth through twentieth basement floors of Midnight Forest. In Explorers of Time, it had to be unlocked by completing a Wonder Mail mission in which the player had to escort Rotom to the fourth floor of Tiny Meadow. In Pokémon Rumble, it could be found at all areas. Rotom also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure as the Zone Keeper for the Haunted Zone.

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

  • In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Rotom appeared as Advanced-rank Support Spirit which raised energy shot attack and resistance. When fought against in a Spirit battle, Rotom's Spirit would possess Pichu and use more powerful electric attacks. The Lightning item would also commonly appear in the battle.

In Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, Rotom was featured in an episode of the Sinnoh series, where it played pranks on Ash's group during their stay at the Old Chateau until Ash's Pikachu was able to defeat it. The Rotom showed remorse, but it still shocked them anyway. The episode also featured Rotom alternating between its different forms during its acts of mischief.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Rotom was first featured in a chapter of the Diamond/Pearl arc, where it attacked Diamond and Pearl at the Old Chateau. It used the television as its base and was able to make illusions of characters from the television shows, although Diamond was able to use this clue to ambush Rotom and defeat it when it returned to the television. This Rotom was revisited during the Platinum chapter when Diamond and Pearl sought it in order to protect it it from Charon. It led them on a chase to Team Galactic's Eterna building, where it went through all of five of its different forms, but it ultimately wound up traveling with Diamond under his protection.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name is simply "motor" spelled backwards. This is actually pointed out within the games in Charon's notes, as he
  • Rotom's design and abilities appear to be an homage to Pulseman, the main character from the game of the same name which was made by Game Freak prior to Pokémon.
