Katy is one of the eight Gym Leaders of the Paldea region who was featured as an opponent in the ninth generation games of the Pokémon series, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. She specializes in Bug-type Pokémon.

Background[edit]

She was a kindly woman living in Cortondo, where she not only acted as the town's gym leader, but she was also an accomplished pastry chef who ran a bakery that she inherited from her family, which was called Patisserie Soapberry. A fellow Gym Leader, Kofu, acted as her culinary instructor and told her to put more of herself into her baking. Katy acted with a sweet demeanor and could be absentminded, as she had a habit of forgetting whether she was at the gym or her bakery. She had a liking for Bug-type Pokémon because, like the sweets she made, they were deceptively powerful for her size. As Cortondo was located close to Mesagoza, it was the first stop for many student trainers. Because of that, Geeta encouraged Katy to go easy on her challengers, "like a sponge cake". Although Katy complied, she felt bad for her Bug Pokémon because they had to lose so much, and she relished opportunities to go all-out. Her gym's Gym Test was linked to the importance of Cortondo's Olive Harvest Festival, as it was the Olive Roll, in which trainers had to roll a giant olive-like ball into a goal to bring good luck for the next harvest.

In Scarlet/Violet, she was challenged by Florian/Juliana. She was initially feeding a Vivillon and took a moment to realize that she was not at the bakery. After being defeated, Katy commended Florian/Juliana on how their strength rose during the battle like a cake in the oven. She gave them her Gym Badge and TM021: Pounce, along with a number of her cupcakes. After taking a picture together, Katy wished the young trainer luck in their future adventures, hoping that they would be sweet and lovely as a good dessert.

Florian/Juliana could return to Katy for a rematch in the post-game as part of a task assigned by Geeta to inspect all of the Gym Leaders through battle in her place. Once Florian/Juliana met with Katy at the gym, it turned out that she had forgotten about the inspection and only happened to be in the gym at the moment to give out cakes to the gym's staff. As Florian/Juliana had become the champion, Katy was now able to go all-out against them and confided in them about how Geeta had her hold back against challengers. Katy was determined to "knead [them] into submission", but she lost again. In the aftermath, Katy reflected on how sweet it felt to battle without holding back, even if she lost, and she resolved herself to hold gym battles in her own style. If anyone complained about Cortondo Gym suddenly being harder, she was ready to explain to them that not all pastries were sweet.

Pokémon Roster[edit]

  • Nymble/Lokix: She uses Nymble in the first battle and Lokix for the rematch.
  • Tarountula/Spidops: She uses Tarountula in the first battle and Spidops for the rematch.
  • Forretress: Used in the rematch only.
  • Heracross: Uaed in the rematch only.
  • Teddiursa/Ursaring: Teddiursa is used in the first match and Ursaring in the rematches. She Terastallizes this Pokémon with a Bug Tera Type.

She was also seen tending to a Vivillon that she referred to as hers prior to the gym battle.

Trivia[edit]

  • Her Japanese name is Kaede, which is a Japanese word for 'maple'. Her English name seems to have been conceived to sound like Kaede and may also refer to 'katydid', a name for a type of bush cricket.
  • While Gym Leaders can be battled in any order in Scarlet/Violet, her Pokémon team has the lowest levels of all the Gym Leaders, and her gym is located closest to the player's starting point, so she the game seems to be implying her as the first Gym Leader to challenge. This is acknowledged and explained by Katy when facing her for the rematch.
