Brassius' was a gym leader of the Paldea region who was featured as an opponent in the ninth generation games of the Pokémon series, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. He specializes in Grass-type Pokémon.

Background[edit]

Brassius was an artist who primarily crafted three-dimensional works such as sculptures, and his work focused on Grass-type Pokémon. He had a rough time when starting out as an an artist which caused him to become deathly ill. He fell into a slump in which he only focused on art that would sell, concerning himself only with fame and fortune. A genuine piece, Surrendering Sunflora, was born of this despair. He was convinced to make it after meeting Hassel, who helped him to realize how petty he was being. So he completed the piece, which established his art style, and he became well-known as an artist. Brasisus felt indebted to Hassel for his help and considered him to be his mentor in life. While he looked serious, he could actually be quite friendly and tended to use the term 'avant-garde' to describe anything he liked. He also brandished a thorny whip that was rolled up at his side.

Brassius also became the Gym Leader of Artazon, with Surrending Sunflora and his other pieces being featured across the town. His Gym Test required challengers to find a number of actual Sunflora that hid themselves around town. During Scarlet/Violet, Brassius was challenged by Florian/Juliana. Brassius watched from the windmill as they completed the task and jumped down from it when it was time for the battle, which he referred to as a collaborative work of art. After being defeated, Brassius was left impressed by the 'artistic tactics' that the challenger employed. He gave Florian/Juliana his Gym Badge as well as TM020: Trailblaze and took a photo with them. Feeling inspired, he went off to work on a new piece. He also appeared as a guest for Hassel's fourth class at the academy, where he talked about his past hardships and advised the students to be honest with themselves.

During the post-game, Brassius could be challenged to a rematch as part of an inspection of the Gym Leaders that Florian/Juliana conducted in Geeta's place at her request. Brassius was pleased to see Florian/Juliana when they visited his gym (referring to them by their name followed by "-garde") and was ready to cancel his plan to meet with the Top Champion in favor of talking about art with the trainer, until he learned that Florian/Juliana was actually there to conduct the inspection. Brassius was not bothered, as he was glad to collaborate aagin, and so they battled once more. After being defeated, Brassius was again left praising Florian/Juliana and inspired to work on another piece. He almost forgot about the gym inspection, but he simply urged the trainer to report as they saw fit regarding his gym.

Pokémon Roster[edit]

  • Petilil/Lilligant: It evolves for the rematch.
  • Smoliv/Arboliva: It evolves for the rematch.
  • Breloom (rematch only)
  • Tsareena (rematch only)
  • Sudowoodo: He Terastallizes this Pokémon with a Grass Tera Type and refers to it as 'Truleewoodo', as a pun reflecting how Sudowoodo typically poses as a tree while actually being a Rock-type.

Trivia[edit]

  • His Japanese name is colza, which is a word for rapeseed. His English name of Brassius is derived from rapeseed's scientific name.
  • He and Hassel refer to each other by nicknames: Brassie and Hass.
  • One of his other works seen is The Harvest, which appears to be based on Arboliva. He is seen with this piece in a billboard advertisement seen in Levincia.
