Debut Pikmin

Captian Olimar is a space pilot who has acted as the original protagonist of the Portal: Pikmin series. He is featured as the main character of Pikmin, Pikmin 2 and the spin-off game Hey! Pikmin, as well as having played a supporting role in Pikmin 3.

Background[edit]

Former captain of the Dolphin, Olimar was a mild-mannered, yet exceptional employee of Hocotate Freight until the fateful day he was hit by an asteroid and crash-landed on an unknown planet. There he met the Pikmin, tiny plant creatures named after the pik pik carrots on Planet Hocotate. The Pikmin were immediately attached to Olimar, and he was able to use them to recover the thirty parts that had broken off of the Dolphin while they learned from him how to defend themselves against the larger creatures on the planet. He safely left the planet within thirty days (if he had stayed longer, his suit would have exposed him to the planet's atmosphere, including poisonous oxygen), taking with him a bottlecap for his son, and perhaps to remind him that the experience had happened at all.

Olimar returned to Hocotate Freight and found that it had accumulated a considerable debt during his absence. The Dolphin was sold, being the company's only asset, leaving Olimar with a rusty old two-seater ship instead. Shocked at losing the Dolphin and being on the verge of having to find a new job, Olimar dropped the bottlecap, which the ship recorded as worth a year's worth of salary (100 pokos). The President of Hocotate Freight sent Olimar and Louie back to the Pikmin's planet to collect more treasure and pay off the debt. During Pikmin 2, Olimar displays even greater leadership capabilities, not only commanding Pikmin but[ Louie as well. He also displays his love of science, recording and commenting on every treasure and life form that they encounter. He was promoted to Perennial Manager by the President for his work with the Pikmin.

Traits[edit]

Olimar is a hard working man. He loves his family, including a wife and two kids, though he sometimes feels restricted by his obligations to them. He desires a humble life and often worries about what he'll do if he's promoted to President of Hocotate Freight, since he can't imagine matching the current President's back-stabbing, slave-driving initiative. He gets along with his boss well enough, though not without a few grumbled complaints.

In many ways, Olimar represents a typical, middle-class worker who, given a dire situation, can become a hero all on his own.

Abilities[edit]

Olimar's abilities primarily consist of his leadership skills in guiding Pikmin.

In the Super Smash Bros. games, his moves are dependent on the Pikmin. He plucks them out of the ground, and they follow him around while helping him to pull off his moves. The Red, Yellow, Blue, White and Purple Pikmin all appear. He can have up to six Pikmin follow him in Brawl, but only three in the 3DS/Wii U Smash.

His special attacks are as follows:

  • Standard Special Move: Pikmin Pluck- Olimar pulls a Pikmin from the ground. In Brawl, the Pikmin color is completely randomized, but in the 3DS/Wii U game, there is a set order in which differently-colored Pikmin are plucked.
  • Side Special Pikmin Move: Pikmin Throw- Olimar will toss a Pikmin that will latch onto the opponent and slowly damage them.
  • Up Special Move: Pikmin Chain- In this special move, the Pikmin and Olimar link together in a chain that is useful for reaching faraway ledges; particularly for saving Olimar from falling off of the stage. This move is in Brawl only.
  • Up Special Move: Winged Pikmin- This move replaces Pikmin Chain in the 3DS/Wii U game. A pair of Winged Pikmin are summoned and will carry Olimar into the air along with his current set of Pikmin. They move more slowly with each extra Pikmin that they carry.
  • Down Special Move: Pikmin Order- Olimar calls his Pikmin into line. This move is also used to shift a new Pikmin to the front of the line.
  • Final Smash: End of Day- Representing the end of a day for Olimar, Olimar and his Pikmin will take off in his spaceship while various monsters from Pikmin appear and ravage the battlefield, causing great damage to the enemy fighters. Olimar then pilots his ship to a crash landing, which will not harm Olimar but can hurt anyone who is caught in the explosion.

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

BrawlOlimar.jpg
  • In the Super Smash Bros. series, Olimar has been featured as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. As detailed above, his moves mostly depend upon utilizing his Pikmin, although he does have a a few physical attacks. In the 3DS/Wii U game, Alph became available as an alternate playable fighter for Olimar through his alternate costumes. In Ultimate, Olimar had to be unlocked through the game's variable-based system for unlocking characters or by awakening him in Adventure Mode (where he was found within a field of enlarged mushrooms).
    • Within the series, Olimar has also been represented by a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee (of him with the Pikmin, available by having Pikmin save data on the same memory card), two trophies (one being for his Final Smash) in Brawl, two trophies (plus one for his Final Smash in the Wii U version) in the 3DS/Wii U installment and a Fighter Spirit in Ultimate.
    • In "The Subspace Emissary", the Adventure Mode of Brawl, he was first found on the Island of the Ancients where he teamed up with Captain Falcon after Falcon took out a giant R.O.B. for him (although he accidentally killed a large number of Pikmin in the process). Captain Falcon then dragged the meeker Olimar into helping Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong fight off the Subspace Army. He was then part of the group fighting in the Subspace Bomb Factory, which joined up with the main party after the factory's explosion for the final battles in Subspace.
    • In Ultimate, his personal Classic Mode route was called "Planetary Invader". Its theme was battling fighters from other planets in stages based on their planets. The final pre-boss battle of the route would be against Alph (or Olimar if the player chose to play as Alph instead), and the route's final boss was Master Hand (joined by Crazy Hand on higher difficulties).
  • In Yoshi's Woolly World, a Yoshi design based on Olimar's appear could be unlocked by scanning his amiibo.
  • In Super Mario Maker, an 8-bit rendition of Olimar appeared as one of the costumes that Mario could transform into with the Mystery Mushroom. His costume could be unlocked as a random prize for completing a 100 Mario Challenge on Expert or harder, or by scanning his amiibo.

Canceled Appearances[edit]

  • Olimar was going to have a cameo in Mario & Luigi, as a patron of Starbeans who gives the player the UV Lamp (changed to Cobalt Necklace in the final game). It was removed for unknown reasons.

Trivia[edit]

  • Olimar's name is a reorganization of Mario's name with an "L" added.
  • Back on Hocotate, Olimar owns a dog named Bulbie, who is very similar to the grub-dog family.
