Debut Metal Gear

Solid Snake is a special agent working for the organization FOXHOUND. He repeatedly destroys nuclear-armed mecha called Metal Gear. Solid Snake usually enters missions with little to no equipment.

Background

Solid Snake was a product of the Les Enfants Terribles project in 1972, a project attempting to create the ultimate warrior by using the genes of the greatest mercenary of the time, Big Boss. Solid Snake was made up of Big Boss's recessive genes and was thought to be the weakest of the three clones made.

Details of Snake's early life are unknown, except that he says he was raised by many people. In 1991, Snake infiltrated western Iraq with the Green berets and was later drafted into FOXHOUND.

Outer Heaven

Snake's first mission with FOXHOUND, Operation: Intrude N313, involved breaking into a fortified state called Outer Heaven, in South Africa. Rumors said that there is weapon of mass destruction in Outer Heaven; Snake was to find the weapon, assess the situation, and neutralize the threat. Before Snake was sent, operative Gray Fox went in. He was captured, but managed to send a message saying "METAL GEAR".

Snake managed to met up with a local resistance group and rescue Snake. Gray Fox told Snake that Metal Gear is a nuclear mech that Outer Heaven planned on using for world domination. In order to destroy Metal Gear, they rescued Metal Gear's engineer and daughter to discover it's weakness. Armed with this information, Snake went to destroy Metal Gear. On the way, he rescued the final hostage where he discovered his C.O., Big Boss, was in charge of Outer Heaven. Snake destroys Metal Gear and is defeats Big Boss. Big Boss destroys Outer Heaven as Snake escaped. Shortly afterwards, Solid Snake retired.

Zanzibar Land

In 1999, a Czech scientist Dr. Kio Marv, bio-engineered a type of algae called OILIX that produces petroleum-grade hydrocarbons. While on his way to the U.S.A. for a demonstration when Dr. Marv was kidnapped by soldiers from Zanzibar Land; an area located between Russia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and China. Solid Snake is brought out of retirement to rescue Dr. Marv.

Snake first meets up with Holly White, a CIA agent; Gustava Heffner, an StB agent and Dr. Marv's bodyguard; and Dr. Drago Pettrovich Madnar, who was once again kidnapped and forced to work on a new Metal Gear. From them, he learns that Big Boss has survived and is in charge of Zanzibar Land. On the way to the detention camp, Dr. Madnar is kidnapped by Snake's former comrade, Gray Fox. Snake fights his way through a detention camp only to discover that Dr. Marv is dead, but finds the formula for OILIX. Shortly after, Snake discovers that Dr. Madnar's kidnapping was staged and he was working on Metal Gear of his own free will.

Next, Snake is confronted by Gray Fox piloting the new Metal Gear. Snake destroys the Metal Gear and battles Gray Fox hand-to-hand in a mine field. While making his escape, Snake is confronted by Big Boss once more. With only a lighter and an aerosol can, Snake defeats him with a makeshift flamethrower. With the crisis resolved, Snake retires to the wilderness of Alaska.

Shadow Moses

When terrorists take over a nuclear weapon disposal site called Shadow Moses in Alaska, Snake is taken out of retirement once more. These terrorists are members of Snake's old unit, FOXHOUND, aided with genetically enhanced GENOME soldiers. Snake's mission id to rescue DARPA chief Donald Anderson and ArmsTech president, Kenneth Baker, as well as neutralize the terrorist threat.

Snake manages to reach both hostages, only to have them die moments later from mysterious heart attacks. While on his way to rescue Dr. Hal Emmerich, also known as Otacon, Snake battles a cyborg ninja who he discovers is Gray Fox. Upon finding Otacon, he discovers that Otacon was the man who designed all of Metal Gear except for the weapon systems and didn't know what it was going to be used for. He also befriends a member of FOXHOUND named Meryl. Snake eliminates each member of FOXHOUND until he reaches Liquid Snake, piloting the new Metal Gear Rex. Snake destroys Metal Gear Rex with the help of Gray Fox and defeats Liquid Snake in hand-to-hand combat. He managed to escape Shadow Moses with Meryl before it self-destructed.

The Oil Tanker Incident

After the incident at Shadow Moses, Snake, Nastasha Romanenko, and Otacon formed a group called Philanthropy dedicated to destroying all Metal Gears. Shortly after the group's founding, they receive a tip saying the Marines have developed a new Metal Gear and are shipping on an oil tanker.

Snake quickly made his way into the tanker and found Metal Gear RAY. Just then, Revolver Ocelot, a former member of FOXHOUND appeared. He was being possessed by Liquid Snake via his hand and stole Metal Gear RAY, sinking the ship. Snake managed to escape and was rescued by Otacon. Another body was used to replace Snake's body. Snake was blamed for the entire incident.

Big Shell

Two years after the Tanker incident, Snake infiltrated an oil cleanup facility named Big Shell disguised as Iroquois Pliskin in order to find Metal Gear Arsenal. There he met fellow operative, Raiden, as well as his third brother, Solidus Snake. With the help of Raiden and Emma Emmerich, Snake was able to install a virus created by Otacon into Metal Gear Arsenal's AI. However, Revolver Ocelot once again steal Metal Gear Arsenal.
