Mist is a playable unit in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, and the sister of the game's protagonist, Ike.

Background[edit]

Mist was born to Greil and Elena in Gallia. Not long after her birth, Greil was driven into a berserk rage from touching Lehran's Medallion, which caused him to slaughter many innocents, including Elena. Afterwards, Greil relocated the family to Altea where he formed a mercenary company. Mist had no memory of her life in Gallia except for some of her mother and, like Ike, did not know the secrets of Greil's past and Elena's death. Mist was close to Ike, although the two often playfully teased each other (the same being true of her relationship with another mercenary, Boyd).

Being too young to fight, Mist mostly performed chores around the mercenary fortress and played with Rolf, who was about the same age as her. Mist and Rolf did not like having to wait around the fortress while everyone else was off fighting, however. Mist took over the cooking duties after Oscar became too busy, but she turned out to be a terrible chef (at least in the beginning). She also held Lehran's Medallion. She was unaffected by the curse of the medallion due to being one of the few people with balance in their being. She did not know of the medallion's dark past and believed that it contained her mother's spirit.

Path of Radiance[edit]

Mist is first seen in "Prologue: Mercenaries", when she oversaw a sparring match between Greil. Then in "Chapter 2: Rescue", she and Rolf were captured by bandits seeking revenge on the Greil Mercenaries, but Ike was able to lead a group of mercenaries and rescued them. After Elincia was discovered, Mist eagerly supported the idea of the mercenaries helping her. The Greil Mercenaries wound up on the run from Daein forces, and Greil was killed in "Chapter 7: Shades of Evil". Mist was depressed, but believed that Greil's spirit had joined her mother's in the medallion.

With the mercenaries on the run, Mist's duties multiplied and became more hectic. At the same time, she wanted to help the others more directly and make sure she did not lose Ike like she did her father. So she forced Rhys to teach her how to wield healing staffs, and she joined the Greil Mercenaries on the battlefield in "Chapter 9: Gallia" along with Rolf. During the journey, Ike and Mist also learned the dark secrets of the medallion's true nature and their father's past, including that he was responsible for their mother's death. Eventually she came to feel sympathy for her parents. She was later distressed when the medallion was stolen while she was sleeping in "Chapter 20: Defending Talrega". She blamed herself, but Ike assured her it was not her fault and he would retrieve it.

Mist acknowledged Ike's need to find revenge on the Black Knight, Greil's killer, saying she'd do so herself if she were a swordfighter, but she warned him to survive so he could fulfill his promise to their father of leading the mercenaries and protecting her. In "Chapter 25: Moment of Fate", Mist followed Ike to his showdown with the Black Knight, unwilling to let the Black Knight kill Ike. They were both able to live through the battle. Afterwards, Nasir apologized to Mist for betraying them and stealing her medallion, but Mist forgave him and welcomed him back to the army.

After the final battle, Mist was able to retrieve the medallion. However, she decided to hand it over to Reyson and Leanne because she saw them as the medallion's rightful owners since it once belonged to their ancestor. She did convince them to let her hold it one more time, in order to say goodbye to the spirits of her parents.

Radiant Dawn[edit]

Over the next three years, the mercenaries kept a low profile until they emerged again to rescue Lucia from Crimean rebels at the end of "Endgame: Elincia's Gambit" in "Part 2: Of Countries and Kings". The mercenaries then began fighting alongside the Laguz Alliance Army in "Part 3: Intersecting Vows". Mist was determined to fight alongside Ike and the others so that if any of them had to die, they would be able to spend their last moments together as to not repeat what had happened with Greil. Ike reluctantly allowed this but asked Mist to remain in his sights.

As the war intensified, Mist began to feel sick due to the overflowing amounts of chaos energy. If she had an A Support with Boyd, then prior to "Endgame: From Pain, Awakening" he gave her from Magic Powder that she had wanted. She related her sickness to Boyd but was still determined to fight on the battlefield, and Boyd swore to protect her. Mist collapsed during the ensuing battle, at which point Ike retreated with her. He brought her to the altar where the war's chaos energies were awakening the goddess inside the medallion. Yune briefly possessed Mist in order to urge Ike that the goddess should be awoken through the galdr of rebirth.

Afterwards, Mist traveled with the Greil Army in "Part 4: Of Gods and Men", feeling much better with the order energy supplied by Ashera.

Possible Fates[edit]

Mist has two different endings in Radiant Dawn depending on whether or not she had an A Rank Support with Boyd.

  • Default Ending- Mist was courted by many young suitors, but she did not become involved with any of them. She lived happily alone.
  • Boyd and Mist's Ending- Mist eventually decided to act on her feelings for Boyd, and the two married each other. She cried when they recited their vows (which annoyed Boyd), and afterwards she humored his insecurities about losing his place among the mercenaries to rookie fighters.

Support Conversation Summaries[edit]

In Path of Radiance, Mist is capable of having Support conversations with five other characters.

  • Boyd- In the first conversation, Mist catches Boyd about to slack off from his training and scares him by impersonating Titania. Mist playfully tells him that she could become a better mercenary than him if he keeps slacking off. Boyd then gets angry and harshly tells Mist that a conceited attitude would result in death on the battlefield and tells her to go away because this wasn't a game. She apologizes and leaves. In the second conversation, Boyd and Mist meet while both are looking for Ike, since Boyd was looking for sparring partner. Mist volunteers to spar with him, saying she wants to toughen up in order to survive the upcoming battles. Boyd agrees to spar with her and apologizes for his outburst in the previous conversation, but Mist thanks him for opening her naive eyes and making her strong. This causes Boyd to blush and, when she notices this, he runs away. In the final conversation, Boyd walks in on Mist while she's depressed. She then begins crying while Boyd attempts to calm her down. He assures her that he and everyone else are there to take care of her, which stops Mist's crying.
  • Jill- Jill refuses to eat dinner with Mist and the others because she thinks the others would be uncomfortable eating with a Daein soldier, but Mist says that the others don't mind and that she is glad to have someone her age traveling with her. Mist then decides to bring the food to Jill. In the next conversation, Jill compliments Mist's cooking and when Jill again asks why Mist is being so nice to a Daein soldier, Mist says she wants to be her friend. There are two different versions of the conversation, depending on what point in the game the conversation takes place in. Jill talks about the laguz and how wrong she realized she was about them after witnessing the revival of Serenes Forest. In the first version, Jill feels that her father would be ashamed of her, but Mist assures her that no father would feel that way, and both of them broke out into tears about their fathers and Jill tells Mist that she makes her sorrows go away. In the second version (taking place after Chapter 20), she feels betrayed by her father, but Mist tells her that her father must have thought he was doing the right thing, and once more they break out into tears. Jill then feels better about her father but decides to choose her own path in life.
  • Mordecai- In the first conversation, Mordecai retrieves a scarf that Mist had been looking for, and Mist finds herself nervous while speaking to Mordecai and wishing she could be more casual like Ike. In the second conversation, Mist very nervously rambles on to Mordecai, but he eventually tells her to calm down and breathe. He notes that she must not have spoken to many laguz before but can tell that she is trying to be his friend in her heart, and he says that they will grow to be friends in time and that he was nervous too while talking to her. In the third conversation, Mist runs into Mordecai while he's looking for Ike, and after they briefly discuss him, Mordecai admits that his hand was shaking when he returned Mist's scarf to her. Mist and Mordecai realize that they must have much in common.
  • Rolf- Mist and Rolf speak for the first time since their first battle together, but Mist becomes disturbed when she sees Rolf anticipating the next battle and swearing to take out many targets. In the next conversation, Mist suggests that they stop fighting and that children don't belong on the battlefield. Rolf insists on fighting the enemy, but Mist reminds him that the enemies are human too, which causes Rolf to ignore her comments and leave. In the final conversation, Rolf says that he understood from the first day that targets were humans just like them, but he also said that they were trying to hurt the people he loved and thus were his enemies. Mist is relieved by this, having thought that war changed him into a heartless killing machine, but now seeing that he was just desperate to protect everyone else. They both agreed that the war would be over one day, and they wanted everyone around to see it.
  • Titania- In the first Support conversation, Titania finds Mist doing the laundry and tells her that she needs to relax and take a break from all of her chores. Titania promises to take her out shopping. In the second conversation, Titania and Mist have returned from the shopping trip, although Misty had been distracted by worrying about the chores. Titania told Mist that she was too considerate of others and was much like her mother Elena because of it. But Titania tells Mist that she is still young and does not yet need to take on the burdens of adulthood. In the third conversation, Titania gets Mist a dress she had wanted and tells her that she should stop and take care of herself every one in a while. She also promises to talk with Mist about any problems she cannot talk about with Ike. Mist loves the dress and thanks Titania.

Mist also has an in-built Support bonus with Ike which increases her chances of performing a critical attack when he is nearby (and vice-versa)

In Radiant Dawn, Mist has automatic Bond Supports with Ike, Boyd, Titania and Jill.

Video Games[edit]

  • In the Super Smash Bros. series, Mist has been represented as a sticker in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and as an Advanced Support Spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, with both games using her Path of Radiance art. As a Spirit, her Support effect was for the player character to start a fight with the effect of Superspicy Curry in motion. When fought in a Spirit battle, Mist would possess Zelda and fight alongside Ike. She also had the ability to heal herself and raise her defense if she got badly damaged.

Trivia[edit]

  • Unused Path of Radiance data indicates that at one point Mist was intended to also have support conversations with Tormod, Volke and Shinon.
  • Mist also had an unused theme song in Radiant Dawn, based on "Life Returns"/the galdr of rebirth.
