Debut Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

Oscar is a playable unit in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and its sequel, Radiant Dawn. The oldest of three brothers, he was a hard-working and responsible young man. This often put him at odds with his more laid back brother, Boyd.

Background[edit]

Oscar entered training to become one of the Crimean knights and became part of the twelfth regiment. He soon met Kieran, a more excitable knight who declared Oscar his arch rival, although Oscar mostly seemed to ignore him. But his time in the Crimea knights was cut off three years prior to Path of Radiance when his father died, and Rolf's mother left the family. This left Boyd and a baby Rolf helpless. Oscar received a discharge from the Crimean knights in order to return home and help them. The three brothers went through tough times until they met with Greil, who gave them all jobs in the Greil Mercenaries along with food to eat and beds to sleep in. Oscar came to appreciate mercenary life and how they could solve problems that Crimean knights could not due to law restrictions. He also served as the group's cook until his duties increased, and he passed that position on to Mist. He also became friends with Greil's son, Ike.

In Path of Radiance, he first appeared when he joined Ike, Boyd and Titania on Ike's first mercenary mission in "Chapter 1: The Battle Begins". Then in "Chapter 2: Rescue", Mist and Rolf had been captured by bandits. Ike and Boyd decided to go to the bandit stronghold themselves to save them, even though this was against Titania's orders. Oscar reluctantly followed them, and was the last mercenary to agree with this plan after Rhys. They were successful but scolded by Titania and Greil afterwards. Later in "Chapter 5: Flight!", Oscar agreed with the idea of protecting Princess Elincia from the Daein forces, as he thought giving her over to Daein was akin to giving them permission to kill her. He decided to remain among the Greil Mercenaries following the death of Greil in "Chapter 7: Shades of Evil", which was followed by Ike taking control of the company. He saw Ike as being similar to Greil, saying that the resemblance was in a way that the cores of their characters were similar.

Oscar was also reunited with Kieran in "Chapter 10: Prisoner Release". After Rolf began fighting alongside them, he was able to guess from Rolf's style that Shinon had taught him, although he kept it a secret at Rolf's urging. After the war ended, Oscar mused about the long road they had traveled and how it passed so quickly, but at the same time he was glad it was over.

Three years later in Radiant Dawn, Oscar returned from hiding with the rest of the Greil Mercenaries at the end of "Part 2: Of Countries and Kings" to prevent Lucia from being hanged by rebels. Oscar than accompanied the other mercenaries in joining with the Laguz Alliance Army. During his time among the army, he impressed the laguz by preparing their favorite foods (but first he needed large quantities of meat which the laguz hunted for him).

In the Base Conversation of "Chapter 2: Stormclouds", Rolf's mother came hoping to take Rolf back (if one of the three brothers had accidentally visited her home in the previous chapter). He felt harshly about her, although he was not as open about it as Boyd. It was Oscar who eventually decided to talk with Rolf so that he could decide whether or not he wanted to see her. Rolf simply refused to see her because he was part of her past, and the mercenaries were his family now. Later on, he was reunited with Kieran when he became part of the army in "Chapter 11: Just Cause". He tried to give Kieran an Imbue skill that would protect him during his self-destructive training, but Kieran refused until Oscar tricked him into accepting it by telling him that accepting it would confirm them as true rivals.

After the war ended, Oscar returned to the Royal Knights at the request of Queen Elincia, but he still did mercenary work on the side.

Support Conversation Summaries[edit]

In Path of Radiance, Oscar is capable of having Support conversations with four other characters.

  • Ike- In the first conversation, Ike asks to spar with Oscar, only to find he is busy cooking the evening meal while Mist is busy training with her staff. Oscar is surprised when Ike comments his cooking style, as Oscar was never sure he liked his cooking since only Mist, Shinon and Rhys commented his cooking, and he was sure that Ike, Greil, Titania and Gatrie would eat anything in front of them. Ike assures Oscar that he always liked his cooking by reminding him how Mist's cooking almost made him sick. Oscar then suggests that Ike encourage Mist as her cooking skills improve. In the second conversation, Ike and Oscar discuss the power of the laguz and wonder how they should battle laguz enemies. Oscar tells Ike he is pretty amazing. Ike tries to tell Oscar he is the one with the experience and talent, but Oscar assures Ike he has natural talent and tells Ike he would follow him anywhere. In the final conversation, they talk about how intense their battles have become, and Oscar asks if there's anything he could do to help Ike. Ike tells Oscar the best thing he could do is to stay by his side, and Oscar agrees to stay there until the end. Ike then tells Oscar he has an urge for his cooking and asks him to help Mist prepare the night's dinner, and Oscar eagerly obeyed.
  • Janaff- Oscar starts speaking with Janaff, but Janaff is confused when Oscar doesn't want anything, so Janaff leaves him. Oscar then scolds himself for botching the conversation and redoubles his efforts to communicate with his laguz allies. In the next conversation, Oscar attempts to relate with Janaff by mentioning Rolf, assuming that the two of them were the same age. But he found that Janaff was actually over 100 years old and yelled at Oscar for calling him a child before departing again. In the final conversation, he apologizes to Janaff, who accepts it while asking Oscar for his age. After learning Oscar is 24, Janaff flips out, surprised that someone so young is on the battlefield and thinking that Oscar's age explained the rude things he said (although Janaff was surprised he could even talk). Janaff decides to forgive Oscar's rude remarks and promises to take care of him if he has nightmares. Oscar nervously complies.
  • Kieran- Oscar politely greets Kieran, but Kieran is too angry at Oscar, remembering how Oscar won a race in their second year of enlistment, which resulted in Kieran declaring Oscar his arch rival. Kieran recalls it as a close race, but Oscar remembers having a much clearer lead. This only increases Kieran's anger, and he says he became so devoted to training hard and overcoming Oscar that he did not know Oscar had gone until six months later. In the second conversation, Kieran pressures Oscar to rejoin the Crimean knights, desperate to have his arch rival nearby again, but Oscar refuses and says he is happy with the Greil Mercenaries. In the final conversation Oscar tells Kieran why he prefers being a mercenary to being a Crimean knight. This reasoning causes Kieran to admit defeat to Oscar once again, but Oscar says that there are also many things Crimean knights can do that mercenaries cannot, so they should both to their best since they aspired to the same ideal. Kieran promises to make his accomplishments legend, and Oscar promises to toast his success afterwards.
  • Tanith- In the first conversation, Oscar returns a cloth Tanith had dropped to her and introduces himself to her, saying that he was honored to meet her. Tanith was surprised at Oscar's manners, as opposed to the traditional view of mercenaries as rude and vulgar. In the second conversation, Oscar talks about how impressive he considered the pegasus knights to be, although Tanith said he was over-romanticizing them. Afterwards, they converse about strategy, and Oscar says that he will help Tanith to convince the pegasus knights that it's acceptable to retreat sometimes. In the final conversation, Tanith calls Oscar full of surprises after finding out he is a cook on top of it all. Tanith admits that she is not good at cooking due to accidentally hurting others while preparing food. Oscar offers to teach her how to cook, and Tanith accepts.

Oscar also has an in-built Support Bonus with Boyd and Rolf, which increases his chances of gaining a critical hit when one of them is nearby, and vice-versa. In Radiant Dawn, Oscar has automatic Bond Supports with the same two characters.

Trivia[edit]

  • Oscar is capable of performing a Bow Triangle Attack with Boyd and Rolf if certain conditions are met by Chapter 19. First of all, prior to Chapter 19 both Boyd and Oscar must have changed class, and Oscar must pick a bow as his second weapon after becoming a Paladin. Secondly, the three must participate in the the "3 Brothers" base Conversation in Chapter 13. Finally, they must participate in a second 3 Brothers Base Conversation in Chapter 19.
    • In Radiant Dawn, the Triangle Attack can be used any time by the three after Oscar has become a Silver Knight and Boyd a Reaver. Bows and crossbows can be used interchangeably for this Triangle Attack.
  • Oscar is the "Green Knight" of the game and has high speed and skills, whereas Kieran is the "Red Knight" and has great strength and defense.
  • Unused Support data for Path of Radiance suggests that Oscar was originally intended to also have support conversations with Astrid.
