Grimer is a sludge-like Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. Its evolved form is Muk.

Information[edit]

Grimer is said to have been born when sludge in a dirty stream was exposed to the moon's x-rays, and is also said to have originated from pollution settling on the ocean floor. It appears primarily in filthy areas and thrives by sucking up polluted sludge when it is pumped out of factories. It smells too putrid for most to touch it, and the germs that are released as it moves renders any soil it moves over infertile, and not even weeds will grow in its path.

Due to their sludgy and rubber forms, they are very malleable creatures that can be forced into any opening. They will usually enter sewer pipes to drink dirty sewer water. Grimer can also combine each others' bodies together, which creates new tokens. A single Grimer will also lose bits of its body as it moves, which will all grow into new Grimer. Grimer evolves into Muk at Level 38.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen, Grimer could be found at the Pokémon Mansion, appearing more commonly in Blue, LeafGreen and Yellow than in Red and FireRed. In Yellow they also appeared at the Power Plant, and in FireRed/LeafGreen, they had a rare chance of being caught while fishing with a Super Rod at Celadon City.

In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Grimer commonly appeared at Routes 16, 17 and 18 (and appeared more commonly at night), and they also appeared when surfing at Celadon City. In HeartGold/SoulSilver, they could also be found both on foot and by surfing at the Safari Zone's Marshland area. Grimer could be caught in the Pokéwalker's Town Outskirts route, from which it could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver.

In Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald they appeared at Fiery Path, being rare in Ruby and Emerald but more common in Sapphire. In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, they were found at Route 212 by using the Pokéradar.

Other Games[edit]

In Pokémon Pinball, Grimer could be caught at Cinnabar Island. They could also be photographed at the Cave area of Pokémon Snap. In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, it was found at the Cave. In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, a Shadow Grimer could be snagged from Cipher Peon Falty at Phenac City. After being purified, this Grimer could be transferred to any of the third generation color versions. Grimer also appeared in Pokémon Trozei! at Phobosphere, Endless Level 35, Trozei Battle and Mr. Who's Den.

Grimer were very widespread in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, as they could be recruited at Magma Cavern, Stormy Sea, Silver Trench, Wish Cave, Murky Cave, Joyous Tower, Far-off Sea, Marvelous Sea and Fantasy Strait. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, they only appeared at the first eight basement levels of Waterfall Cave. In Pokémon Ranger, they were found at the Waterworks. They also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Eternal Tower.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, Grimer and Muk were initially featured in one episode of the first series where they terrorized Gringey City and jammed its power plant until Ash and his friends drove them away with the help of Magnemite and Magneton. Erika later recounted the story of her Gloom saving her from a Grimer when she was a child. During one Sinnoh era episode, Dawn temporarily received a Grimer with low confidence to train as part of a Pokémon Summer Academy assignment. The two were bonded to the point where Dawn was awarded for having developed the best relationship with her Pokémon.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Koga was shown to have a Grimer that he used in battles with Blue and Agatha. Janine also had her own Grimer that she used during her battle with Falkner.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name is a simple play on grime.
