Muk is a large sludge Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. It is the evolved form of Grimer.

Information[edit]

Muk evolves from a Grimer at Level 38. It is covered with a thick and vile toxic sludge, and even its footprints contain poison. They smell awful enough to cause fainting in most people. Muk themselves have lost their sense of smell through degeneration, so they are not affected by their own stench. As its body is made of potent poison, just touching it will leave one bedridden with a fever. Very strong poison leaks from it as it moves, which leaves the ground there barren for years, and its body instantly kills plant life. One drop of its body fluid could turn a clean pool rancid and stagnant.

Its favorite food is anything that is repentantly filthy. They tend to gather in cities that are litter-heavy and dirty. They also love to gather in foul-smelling areas where sludge accumulates, which only tends to accentuate their stench. Muk prefer warm and humid habitats. During summertime, the toxic substances intensify to give Muk a scent that has been compared to putrid kitchen garbage.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Pokémon: Red, Blue, Yellow and LeafGreen. It is rare in Red and LeafGreen, but is a bit more common in Blue and somewhat more common than that in Yellow. In Yellow, it can also be uncommonly found at the Power Plant and can be received by trading a Kangaskhan to a man at Cinnabar Island.

In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Muk was found rarely at Routes 16, 17 and 18 (appearing more often at night) and by surfing at Celadon City. In HeartGold/SoulSilver, it could also be encountered both on foot and while surfing at the Safari Zone's Marshland area with the presence of Water objects.

Other Games[edit]

Muk could only be obtained by evolving a Grimer in games such as Pokémon Pinball, Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams. In Pokémon Snap, it could be photographed at the Cave area. In Pokémon Trozei!, Muk was found at Secret Storage 16, Trozei Battle and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Ranger, they could be found at Waterworks.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Muk was recruitable at Sky Stairway. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it was found at Volcano Cave. It also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Eternal Tower.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, Muk was featured in one episode with various Grimer that were causing trouble at a Power Plant which was affecting a whole city. Ash wound up catching the Muk in order to get rid of it. It was sent to Professor Oak's lab, which started the recurring gag of the Muk always trying to smother Oak. Ash used the Muk for the first time during the Indigo League Conference as a surprise Pokémon to defeat a tough Bellsprout. It since has only made occasional small appearances.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Muk has been shown as one of Koga's Pokémon.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name is a play on "muck", which refers to filth.
