Qwilfish is a pufferfish-like Pokémon that was introduced in the second generation games.

Information[edit]

Qwilfish's body is covered in small spikes that developed from scales, and they contain toxins which can make others faint. They can inflate themselves by sucking in water and then use the pressure of the swallowed water to shoot the toxic quills out from its body. This requires over 2.6 gallons of water. Qwilfish also swallow as much water as they can to match an opponent's size when facing a larger enemy. Qwilfish's main disadvantage is that its round size makes it a poor swimmer.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Pokémon: Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, they could be uncommonly fished with the Super Rod (as well as the Good Rod in HeartGold/SoulSilver, in which they are also rarer) at Routes 12, 13 and 32, but they could become common at Route 32 during swarms. In FireRed, they could be fished with the Super Rod at Five Island, Six Island and Seven Island.

In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, they could be rarely found by fishing at Iron Island with the Super Rod. In Black and White, Qwifish could be fished only from rippling water at Routes 17 and 18 and P2 Laboratory.

Other Games[edit]

A Shadow Qwilfish could be snagged from Hunter Doken at Pyrite Town in Pokémon Colosseum, and after being purified it could be transferred to any of the third generation color versions. Among the e-Reader games, Qwilfish appeared as an obstacle in the "Diving Corsola" minigame. In Pokémon Trozei!, it was found at Secret Storage 12, Endless Level 45, Forever Level 18 and Mr. Who's Den. Qwilfish could be recruited in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams at the first nine floors of Silver Trench and Great Sea as well as the first nine basement floors of Fantasy Strait. They could also be recruited in Explorers of Time and Darkness at the first twenty basement floors of Surrounded Sea, the first eighteen basement floors of Miracle Sea, the first four basement floors of Deep Miracle Sea and the first forty-nine basement floors of Bottomless Sea. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it appeared at Puel Sea. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it could be found at Eastern Sea.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, Qwilfish was first shown during the Johto series as the main Pokémon of Harrison, who was Misty's opponent in the semifinals of the Whirl Cup. It lost to her Corsola. Another episode showed a Corsola as the main Pokémon of Dorian, leader of Blackthorn City's unofficial Coastline Gym, and he was able to use it to easily defeat Misty's Goldeen. Corsola have also made various, primarily minor appearances throughout the anime.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, one chapter of the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc featured a swarm of Qwilfish that attacked workers at Olivine Harbor after the water was polluted by an accident in the construction of the Battle Tower. Crystal wound up battling and defeating them all, only to find one baby Qwilfish that seemed to be poisoned by the waste. Suicune appeared to clear the pollution and also healed the Qwilfish. Platina later used a Qwilfish as a rental Pokémon for the Battle Factory in the Platinum arc.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name is simply a combination of a play on "quill" with "fish".
