Debut Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryuu to Hikari no Tsurugi

Julian is a playable unit appearing in Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryuu to Hikari no Tsurugi, Monshou no Nazo and Shadow Dragon. He is the first playable thief available in the game (as well as the series as a whole).

Background[edit]

Book One[edit]

Julian was originally part of a group of bandits based in the Ghoul's Teeth known as the Soothsires. However, he had a change of heart after they captured the cleric Lena, whom he fell in love with and betrayed his fellow bandits to rescue (it is uncertain if this was their first meeting however, as BS Fire Emblem showed that Lena had previously known Julian's friend Rickard). Julian was intent on escaping with Lena, telling her to forget going back to her Mend staff, and they reached safety amomng the ranks of Marth's army in Chapter 3 (being automatically playable from the beginning of the chapter in the first versions and recruited by Marth in the DS version). He would also be able to force his friend Rickard into service after Rickard teased him by asking if his side-switching was caused by a pretty face.

Following the war's end, Julian gave up thievery and found an honest job in Macedon.

Book Two[edit]

Three years later, Julian was concerned when Lena disappeared. In Chapter 3 Palla met with him while seeking Marth, but he was too busy searching for Lena to join her. However, when Marth talked to him, Julian was convinced to join Marth to hlpe search for Lena, as Marth was growing increasingly concerned about the disappearances of several maidens. Julian could also recruit Lena's brother Matthis later on; he was mad at Matthis for always teasing him and claimed that he and Lena weren't even that close but he wanted to help her anyway, which made Matthis change his mind about Julian and start calling him "little brother". He also could recruit Rickard as well, who pretended to be in love with Julian to make him uncomfortable.

In the final chapter, only Julian could awaken Lena from Gharnef's hypnosis, claiming that even though he was a man with no merits, he would do anything for her and had no wishes other than to see her smile. This succeeded in awakening her, at which point she admitted her love for him and proposed they move together to Macedon following the war's end, saying that the deities would forgive her for breaking her vow of celibacy due to her love for him. With the War of Darkness over, they both returned to Macedon and helped to run Lena's orphanage there together (if Lena had died, Julian cared for the orphans to carry on her will).

Other Appearances[edit]

  • He appeared in the second episode of the Fire Emblem OVA, where he and Navarre both helped to rescue Lena from the bandits.

Trivia[edit]

  • In Monshou no Nazo and Shadow Dragon, he receives Support Bonuses from Lena.
