Vaati is the powerful Wind Mage known for kidnapping beautiful maidens and his mastery over the power of wind. Vaati is one of the most frequent foes of Link and is closely connected to the Four Sword.

Background

Early Years

Although a powerful sorcerer, his beginnings were rather humble. As a picori, he was apprentice of a powerful wizard named Ezlo. His master had created the Minish Cap, a item of immense power. When not looking, Vaati stole the cap and put it on. He transformed his body into one more human-like. When his master confronted him, he turned him into a a bird-shaped hat and vanished. Eager for more power, Vaati began searching for the legendary 'Light Force'. He took on a larger size and proceeded to win a sword fighting contest at Hyrule Castle.

When it was time to be given his reward, the chance to touch the Picori Blade, he revealed his true purpose, dealt with the soldiers easily, and turned Zelda to stone. He opened the Bound Chest, only to find it full of monsters and not containing the Force he was looking for. He then vanished. While Link set out to repair the Picori Sword, Vaati grew tired of searching for the force and imprisoned the king and took his form. He then sent soldiers all over Hyrule to find this missing force. After Link transformed the Picori Blade into the Four Sword, Vaati revealed himself and, realizig that the Light Force was within Zelda all along, attempted to drain it from her body. Link arrived in time to stop Vaati and fought him in a more advanced form. Vaati then transformed into a giant floating eye and fought Link again - twice. Ultimately, Link succeeded in destroying Vaati.

Later Years

Vaati was not gone for good. He would appear again, collecting maidens, only to be beaten again by the power of the Four Sword. He was then imprisoned in the Four Sword, which was placed in the Four Sword Sanctuary. But he soon found his way out again. One day when Link and Zelda were examining the seal, he broke out and captured Zelda and took her to his Wind Palace. Once more he was defeated and sealed in the Four Sword.

Once again he returned, but this time with outside help. Link chases a shadowy version of himself (Dark Link) into the Four Sword Sanctuary. Knowing the consequences, Link drew the Four Sword to defeat the doppelganger. But before he could do anything, Vaati quickly sent him flying away with a powerful cyclone. Between him, the Dark Links and Ganon, the seven maidens were captured and imprisoned. Despite this, Link confronted him once again. By then his fear of the Four Sword had grown. Because of this, he fought poorly and was easily defeated.

Trivia

  • Vaati's original picori form was basically like other picoris. When he had the Minish Cap, he was still the size of the Picori, but had already taken a more human appearance.
  • Although there have been other end-game villains like Dethl and Majora, Vaati is the only one to ever be the final boss in two games besides Ganon.
