Super Mario Land is a platformer for the Gameboy. Directed by Gunpei Yokoi, it is the first Mario game that Shigeru Miyamoto was not in charge of. It is the third bestselling Mario game and the fourth bestselling game for the Gameboy. Super Mario Land marked the first appearance of Princess Daisy.

Story

An alien called Tatanga has kidnapped Princess Daisy of Sarasaland. Mario must save her while defeating the enemies that stand in his way.

Gameplay

Super Mario Land is divided into four different worlds and each world has three levels. Each of the levels has a different theme; Birabuto resembles ancient Egypt, Muda is an aquatic area, Easton resembles China, and Chai is in the sky. In the sixth level, the player gets to steer a submarine and in the twelth level, they get to fly an airplane.

The game itself plays very much like Super Mario Bros.. The player can find mushrooms to make them grow and flowers to let them throw "superballs". Unlike fireballs, superballs can bounce off objects and be used to collect coins.

If the player can beat the game, they can play the game again in Hard Mode. Hard Mode has more enemies and dangers. If the player beats Hard Mode, they can use the level select. However, since the game can't save, all progress is lost when the game is turned off.

Legacy

Princess Daisy appears as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee, as well as an alternate costume for Princess Peach. Also, one of 9-Volt's microgames in WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$! is based on Super Mario Land.

Sequels

Super Mario Land was followed by Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins.

Ports and Remakes

  • In 2011, Super Mario Land was rereleased as one of the launch titles for the 3DS Virtual Console.
