Lakilester (more commonly known by his alias of Spike) is a Lakitu partner appearing in the first Paper Mario.

Background

Lakilester was a member of Team Lakitu that had been assigned to work for Huff N. Puff when he attacked Flower Fields. Lakilester was specifically sent to beat up Mario, though he was beaten instead. Mario spared Lakilester after some "gentle" persuasion from Lakilester's girlfriend, Lakilulu, and Lakilester repaid him by joining the party, discovering that it felt way better to help people than to hurt them. Using his cloud, Lakilester was able to carry himself and others safely across spikes and even lava.

Lakilester seems to take his style from Elvis Presley, and is always looking for a way to make himself cooler, like changing his name (two of which included Michael and Spike) or joining up with a guy with noble, but melodramatic intentions. While he pretends to be frustrated with Lakilulu's interruptions and her calling him Lakilester, he really finds it cute. Once "Lord" Bowser had been defeated, Lakilester went to Flower Fields and stayed with Lakilulu. They both attended the celebration at Peach's Castle (note that he doesn't mind that Peach calls him Lakilester).

Gameplay

Lakilester gives Mario a ride over a spike pit.

Outside of battle, Lakilester can give Mario a ride in his cloud. The cloud is slightly faster than Mario's normal walking speed, though he can't jump while riding it. More importantly, the cloud can be used to cross spike pits and lava.

In battle, Lakilester has the following attacks:

  • Spiny Flip - Lakilester tosses a Spiny's Egg at an enemy, assuming his aim is true.
  • Spiny Surge - For 4 FP, Lakilester bombards all enemies with Spiny's Eggs, though not to much damage.
  • Cloud Nine - For 4 FP, Lakilester gives Mario a cloud of his own, which increases his chances of not being hit by an enemy.
  • Hurricane - For 5 FP, Lakilester's cloud will create a gust of wind that may blow enemies out of battle.

Trivia

  • Lakilester's friend, Flight, apparently wasn't too happy about him joining Mario. Nor was the rest of Team Lakitu, for that matter...
  • If you battle Huff N. Puff while Lakilester is Mario's partner, the boss will make a special point to call him a traitor. He even remembers to call him Spike.
  • Lakilester has a Catch Card in Super Paper Mario, received on the ninetieth floor of the Flopside Pit of 100 Trials. It can be sold for 350 coins.
