Huff N. Puff is the fanatical boss of the sixth chapter in Paper Mario, with a body composed entirely of Tuff Puffs.

Background[edit]

Huff N. Puff dreams of a world covered in clouds. To this end, he agrees to guard the Star Spirit Klevar for Bowser, in return for the Puff Puff Machine, a machine that constantly puffs out clouds, and a division of Lakitu servants. Huff N. Puff took the Puff Puff Machine to Flower Fields, where clouds would have the most devastating effect, then hid himself high above in Cloudy Climb, where only a magical beanstalk could reach him. He also attempted to steal the Water Stone from Lilly, to use as fuel for the Puff Puff Machine, but his lackeys lost it.

When Mario showed up in Flower Fields, Huff N. Puff didn't pay him much mind. It wasn't until Mario discovered the location of the Puff Puff Machine from the Sun that Huff N. Puff became concerned, and sent Lakilester to take Mario out. Mario defeated Lakilester, however, and the two of them joined forces to destroy the Puff Puff Machine. With the Sun back in the sky, Mario planted a beanstalk and climbed it into the clouds, where faced off against Huff N. Puff. When Huff N. Puff was defeated, he bursted into a bunch of Tuff Puffs, who all go flying.

Huff N. Puff also appeared in the ending parade. He was floating along at normal size when a group of five Yoshi kids attacked him with their tongues at the same time, eating away most of his body and leaving him at a small size. He was then chased off by a Gourmet Guy.

Gameplay[edit]

The most difficult part of the fight with Huff N. Puff is all of the button mashing required to avoid most of his and his Tuff Puffs' attacks. Every hit to Huff N. Puff will break more Tuff Puffs off his body, who will then squeeze Mario on their turn. Huff N. Puff can also suck up whatever Tuff Puffs remain to restore his health. It's easiest to first do strong damage with Mario, then to use Lakilester's semi-weak Spiny Surge to clear up the Tuff Puffs. In a last ditch attempt, Huff N. Puff will charge up on one turn and strike Mario with a lighting attack on the next, but this is easily avoided with Bow.

Trivia[edit]

  • Sometimes considered a difficult boss, maybe because he's the only one without a Heart Block two screens away.
