Debut Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Goombella is a Goomba character who was featured a partner character in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. She is the first partner to be recruited in the game.

Background[edit]

Goombella was a young goomba researcher who studied at the University of Goom. While at Rogueport to meet her old professor, Frankly, she ran into a group of X-Nauts led by Lord Crump, who tried to interrogate her. At that point, Mario showed up and was able to fend them off. When Goombella found out Mario had the special map, she quickly rushed him off to Professor Frankly to have him look at it. She ended up joining Mario's quest, providing her extensive knowledge and observations to Mario throughout his quest.

After their adventure came to an end, they went their separate ways. Goombella wrote a letter to Mario about how things were going in his absence, and she also arranged for all of his friends from that adventure to rejoin his group when he returned to Rogueport.

Personality[edit]

Goombella's a very independent-minded goomba, although she has a 'valley girl' sort of personality. In her tattles she's often guilty of breaking the fourth wall, such as comments about the fact that their adventures are an actual game. (In fact, she even apologizes for it when Mario has her talk about Steward the Blimp operator at Glitzville). A great deal of her personality shines through her tattles. For examples, she's scared of spiders and is really grossed out by enemies that bite and suck HP.

Gameplay[edit]

Outside of battle, Goombella provides Mario with information on areas, people, and items that he's standing next to. Oftentimes this information provides a hint on what Mario does next, or can provide an interesting backstory to some of the characters met.

In battle, Goombella has the following attacks:

  • Headbonk - Goombella jumps on an enemy headfirst, similar to Mario's Jump.
  • Tattle - Goombella informs Mario about an enemy's HP, defense, attack, and various quirks. Enemies that Goombario has Tattled will have an HP bar under them henceforth and will also be recorded in the Tattle Log.
  • Multibonk - For 3 FP, Goombella can bounce on an enemy repeatedly, similar to Mario's Power Bounce.
  • Rally Wink - For 4 FP, Goombella can sacrifice her own turn in a round to let Mario go twice.

Goombella starts with 10 HP, but will progress to 20 and then 30 HP as her rank is raised.

Trivia[edit]

  • Her skill 'Tattle' is the same as Goombario's, except that it must now be timed.
  • Goombella is a student at the University of Goom, with the instruction manual further describing her as a coed in her second year of an archeology major, while in the game she says she is a junior.
  • Goombella has a Catch Card in Super Paper Mario, received after completing the Duel of 100 in Chapter 6. It can be sold for 357 coins.
    • #249 "It's Goombella from the last Paper Mario adventure. This extra-spunky university student knew it all."
  • In Paper Mario: Sticker Star, part of a paper written by her could be found in the junkyard at the Shy Guy Jungle. Apparently, she had researched the ancient civilization of the Chomp Ruins.
  • Goombella appears as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
