Janaff is a playable unit in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn.

Background

Janaff, along with Ulki, served as a loyal retainer to Tibarn, the king of Phoenicis. While Ulki's specialty was hearing, Janaff possessed acute eyesight and claimed that he could see for miles. Compared to Ulki, Janaff was more talkative and had a faster temper. In Path of Radiance, he was first seen in "Chapter 13: A Guiding Wind", when he used his eyesight to describe a scene of battle in the distance. When they searched Serenes Forest for Reyson in "Chapter 17: Day Breaks", Janaff used his eyesight to pick the clearest paths through the forest. In the fourth part of the chapter, Janaff joined the battle alongside Tibarn and Ulki in order to help Ike and his mercenaries fight off Oliver.

After Reyson joined the Crimean Liberation Army in "Chapter 18: Crimea Marches", Tibarn sent Janaff and Ulki to join with the army as well so that they could help Reyson. Janaff's abilities were useful in spying on the enemy troops prior to battle. After the war ended, Janaff and Ulki returned to Tibarn's side. Before leaving, Janaff told Ike to send up a flaming arrow if he ever needed them, and he said he would be able to see it and offer help.

Support Conversation Summaries

Janaff is capable of having Support conversations with three other characters.

  • Lucia- Lucia introduces herself to Janaff in a very cordial manner, but Janaff says they're fighting together in the army so they should solidify their friendship in a more casual atmosphere, suggesting a night on the town, but Lucia does not think her father will approve, and Janaff realizes she's younger than he though she was. In the next conversation, Janaff talks about Phoenicis, and Lucia raises the topic of its relations to other countries and suggests it looks towards diplomatic relations with Crimea. Janaff says that the deal is ultimately up to the king and admits that he used to hate beorcs, but he has come to like them after befriending Lucia. In the third conversation, Janaff complains that peaceful living between beorcs and laguz will not come easily and if war erupted between Phoenicis and Begnion, he believes that Lucia will support Begnion since Crimea is basically a Begnion colony. Lucia says she is dedicated to Crimea but hopes to meet Janaff after the war as a friend and not an enemy. Janaff agrees with this and also hopes she will be old enough to go out without a chaperon by then.
  • Oscar- Oscar starts speaking with Janaff, but Janaff is confused when Oscar doesn't want anything, so Janaff leaves him. Oscar then scolds himself for botching the conversation and redoubles his efforts to communicate with his laguz allies. In the next conversation, Oscar attempts to relate with Janaff by mentioning Rolf, assuming that the two of them were the same age. But he found that Janaff was actually over 100 years old and yelled at Oscar for calling him a child before departing again. In the final conversation, he apologizes to Janaff, who accepts it while asking Oscar for his age. After learning Oscar is 24, Janaff flips out, surprised that someone so young is on the battlefield and thinking that Oscar's age explained the rude things he said (although Janaff was surprised he could even talk). Janaff decides to forgive Oscar's rude remarks and promises to take care of him if he has nightmares. Oscar nervously complies.
  • Shinon- In the first conversation, Janaff attempts to interrogate Shinon, but Shinon blows him off and calls him an ignorant half-breed while threatening him to leave him alone. They both claim to be letting the other go for now. In the second conversation, Shinon attempts insulting Janaff while Janaff insults Shinon by bringing up Greil's past. Janaff is confused and asks Shinon what he fights for, when Shinon says that he simply fights to live. Janaff is surprised by this, having heard that humans like to kill and make weapons to hunt laguz for sport. Shinon opposes by saying that the laguz are the killers and humans make weapons to defend themselves from laguz. In the final conversation, Janaff apologizes for his assumptions about the beorcs and admits he's come to like General Ike, although Shinon mentions his hatred for Ike. Janaff tells Shinon that he reminds him of him when he was younger, revealing himself to be over 110. Shinon is shocked by this and tries to ask Janaff about all the things he's seen in his life.

Janaff also has inbuilt Support bonuses with Ulki and Reyson (which increase his chances of delivering a critical hit if one of them are nearby and vice-versa) and Tibarn (which protects Janaff from enemy critical hits when Tibarn is nearby).
