Hitmonchan is a special fighting Pokémon introduced in the first generation fighting games. Having no evolution line at first, during the second generation games it was discovered that both Hitmonchan and its rival Hitmonlee (as well as new Pokémon Hitmontop) were alternate evolutions of the baby form Tyrogue.

Information

Hitmonchan is one of the three potential evolution paths that Tyrogue undergoes upon reaching Level 20. Tyrogue will evolve into Hitmonchan if its Defense is higher than its Attack, thus indicating that Hitmonchan has the highest defense of the three Hitmon Pokémon.

It specializes in punches and is said to have the spirit of a boxer whom had been working towards a world championship, being known for its determination and never giving up. When it is apparently doing nothing, Hitmonchan is actually firing punches in lighting fast volleys which are impossible to see. They punch in a corkscrew fashion and can punch through concrete walls like a drill. Its punches slice the air and are fast enough that they can burn opponents just by grazing them.

Its punches are said to be faster than a bullet train, and it spins its arms before making contact to make its punches stronger. However, it usually must rest after just three minutes of fighting, likely do to its great power.

Mainstream Games

In Pokémon: Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen, the Karate Master will reward the player for defeating him by offering a choice of either Hitmonchan or Hitmonlee. In all following games from the second generation onwards, Hitmonchan could only be obtained through trades or by evolving Tyrogue.

Other Games

In Pokémon Pinball, Hitmonchan could be found in Saffron City on the Blue table. In Pokémon Stadium, Hitmonchan was one of the Pokémon that could be randomly distributed as a prize for completing the Gym Leader Castle and could then be transferred to any of the first generation games. In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, a Shadow Hitmonchan could be snagged at Citadark Island. After being purified, this Hitmonchan could be transferred to any of the third generation color versions.

In Pokémon Trozei!, it coould be found at Phobos Walker and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Resue Teams, it could only be obtained through evolution, but in Explorers of Time and Darkness, it was found on the first nineteen floors of Mt. Trevail. In Pokémon Rumble, Hitmonlee could be found in the Fiery Furnace.

Other Appearances

• Hitmonchan has appeared in multiple episodes throughout the Pokémon anime and was first featured in a first season episode where a trainer named Anthony used it to compete in the P1 Grand Prix. It wound up being defeated by a Hitmonlee being used by Team Rocket, whom had cheated, leading Ash's Primeape to avenge its lost.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Hitmonchan was first shown as part of Bruno's roster, and he described it as being like three Pokémon in one due to knowing Fire, Ice and Thunder Punches. During the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc, it was one of Crystal's main Pokémon, and she also sent it to Emerald during the Emerald arc.

Trivia

• The "hitmon" part of its name (shared with alternate evolutions Hitmonlee and Hitmontop) seems to be a shortened way of indicating that it is a hitting monster. As with Hitmonlee, the last part of its name is named after a real life martial artist, Jackie Chan.
