Yanma is a large dragonfly-like Pokémon that was introduced in the second generation games. It had no evolutionary line until the fourth generation games, when it was discovered to evolve into Yanmega.

Information[edit]

Yanma has large eyes which are capable of seeing 360 degrees without Yanma having to move them. They are also great fliers and skilled at making sudden stops as well as turning midair. Yanma looks in all directions to seek insects or attackers, and it then uses its flying ability to chase them down. Yanma can also flap its wings hard enough to generate shock waves which shatter windows in the area.

They can hover in one spot by flapping their wings at high speed. Yanma flit about to protect their territory. It can evolve by leveling up after learning AncientPower, which it usually learns at Level 33 starting in the fourth generation.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Pokémon: Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Yanma rarely appeared in Route 35, but they became more common during swarms. In FireRed and LeafGreen, Yamna were uncommonly found at Ruin Valley. In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Yanma could be found at the Great Marsh, appearing normally in Platinum but only showing up after the National Pokedex was unlocked in Diamond/Pearl. In Black and White, they appeared at Route 14 during swarms.

Other Games[edit]

A Shadow Yanma could be snagged from Cipher Peon Nore at Miror B.'s hideout, from which it could be transferred to any of the third generation color versions. Yanma appeared in Pokémon Channel at the Back Yard on cloudy days and evening. In Pokémon Trozei!, Yanma was found at Endless Level 13, Endless Level 38, Forever Level 18 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, it could be recruited at the first eight floors of Silent Chasm, the ninth through fifteenth floors of Pitfall Valley and the ninth through fifteenth basement floors of Ruins Island, while in Explorers of Time and Darkness it was recruitable at the first eight floors of Steam Cave, the first floor of Upper Steam Cave and the first five floors of Lush Prairie.

In My Pokémon Ranch, a Yanma could be obtained during a random trade with Hayley and then could be transferred to Diamond or Pearl (as well as Platinum in Japan). In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it was found at Union Road. Yanma also appeared in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs at Sophian Road.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, Yanma was initially featured in an episode of the Johto series, where an initially uncontrollable Yanma stole Ash's hat and shattered windows at a town. It caused havoc for the town until the boy Zachary, who caught it, was able to take control of Yanma and used it to defeat Team Rocket. Yanma later learned to control its Sonic Boom. In the Sinnoh series, Jessie of Team Rocket caught a Yanma that had already been weakened by another trainer and tried to sent it to Giovanni. She wound up training it herself after he rejected it, and it quickly evolved into Yanmega due to it having already learned AncientPower. Yanma have also made other minor appearances throughout the anime.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, one chapter of the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc featured three Yanma attacking Indigo Plateau until Gold was able to stop them to save a child.

Trivia[edit]

  • "Yanma" is Japanese for "large dragonfly". While its English name uses the word straightforwardly, the Japanese name was actually a play on it ("Yanyanma").
