Syrene is a playable unit from Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones.

Background[edit]

Syrene and her sister Vanessa were raised in Frelia. There was an incident when they were young in which their father collapsed. Syrene and her mother panicked and had no idea what to do, but the young Vanessa was able to remain calm and took matters into her own hands, managing to acquire medicine for him. This inspired Syrene's life of overachievement in order to support and protect her family. She joined the pegasus knights at a young age. At one point in her youth she met the visiting Kyle, although he was more interested in his mission than the local sights. Syrene was still able to give him a wooden pegasus figurine before he parted. Syrene's first assignment after graduating from the academy was to watch over Princess Tana, and the two formed a sisterly bond at the same time. This ended when Syrene was promoted to the pegasus knights, and she met her new colleague Gilliam during her first mission with the pegasus knight elite. Over the years, Syrene continued to improve herself and rose through the ranks until she became the commander of Frelia's pegasus knights. She inspired nearly everyone she knew, and like her sister she also seemed to develop a crush on Prince Innes.

During the War of the Stones, Syrene was eventually deployed leading Frelian forces to Rausten ahead of the forces which were lead by Eirika, Ephraim and Innes. However, most of these forces were decimated during a skirmish at Narube River in "Chapter 17: River of Regrets". Syrene joined with Eirika and Ephraim's forces after either Vanessa, Innes or Tana spoke with her. She continued to fight for this army for the remainder of the war.

Possible Fates[edit]

Syrene has four different endings, depending on whether or not she reaches an A Rank Support with any of three characters.

  • Default Ending - Syrene continued to serve as commander of Frelia's pegasus knights. Her grace and beauty in flight were the subject of many songs and paintings, which boosted her popularity.
  • Gilliam and Syrene's Ending - They returned to Frelia and were married. Syrene and Gilliam were universally accepted as a perfect match, and their union was blessed by the crown and the order of the knights. They continued their unwavering service of Frelia together.
  • Kyle and Syrene's Ending - Kyle visited Frelia after the war, and Syrene warmly welcomed him. They married following both of their retirement and raised a daughter who was skilled in martial arts as well as etiquette.
  • Vanessa and Syrene's Ending - The two returned to Frelia together and had a long-overdue talk about love and war as well as friends now gone. This renewed their bond as siblings, and they vowed never to let that bond fail.

Support Conversation Summaries[edit]

Syrene is capable of having support conversations with five other characters:

  • Gilliam - Gilliam and Syrene are reunited, with Syrene complimenting his looks and Gilliam chastising her for teasing him. She reminds him of how he had been there during her first mission with Frelia's pegasus knight elite, but Gilliam has a fuzzy memory of it and claims to have trouble imagining her as a recruit. He assures her it is because of how fine a warrior she has become, and they agree that much more hangs in the balance in the current conflict than during that past mission. In the next conversation, Gilliam notices that Syrene seems unwell and then talks to her about how both of them seem to wind up being asked for advice from others often. He asks her what one is supposed to do when they do not know what advice to give, and Syrene assures him that just listening to others' problems is enough due to how natural it is to get scared while they are fighting a war. Gilliam asks Syrene if she is scared, which causes her to ask him if he is just trying to probe for her problems and assures her that she will come to him for help if she actually does have problems. In the final conversation, Syrene notices how Gilliam is always looking out for her while she is already making sure to look out for everyone else, and she admits that she stays close to him just to hear him say her name. Gilliam then asks Syrene to marry her when they return to Frelia, but Syrene tells him he does not have to wait that long for her answer. She agrees to his proposal and says she will wait until the end of the war to officially give her answer, and they both wish each other luck.
  • Kyle - The two meet up with each other and know each other's names. Syrene points out that they knew each other ten years ago, which surprises Kyle as he has trouble realizing that this Syrene is the same Syrene whom he knew in his childhood. They agree to catch up after battle, and Syrene tells him to be a hero again. Kyle does not recall the incident she refers to, so Syrene tells her to see if he can remember it as his homework. In the next conversation, Syrene checks up on Kyle and criticizes his stuffy response. He still has not remembered the time she was referring to, and Syrene realizes he has not changed and has always been so serious, recalling when he refused a tour of Frelia's castle town when he visited Frelia for three days as a child. Kyle apologizes, which Syrene laughs at, and he fondly recalls how he saw the sea for the first time during this trip. He remembered wanting to feel as strong as the ocean, and Syrene feels it was the first time she saw the real him. They promise to visit the Frelian coast again after the war ends. In the final conversation, Kyle tends to Syrene's wounded pegasus and tells her it is not her fault that she did not notice the wound because the pegasus was hiding its weakness to look strong. Syrene feels that she is not fit to be a pegasus knight and that her ignorance endangered them. Kyle assured her and that he would always be there for her and finally recalled the memory he was talking about, when she came to help him fight off a group of bandits outside Frelia. She remembers she had come across him in battle while trying to give him his going away present, a wooden pegasus that Kyle still carried on him and which inspired him to continue collecting wooden figures. Syrene asks him to consider visiting Frelia again when they are at peace, and Kyle agrees to this. He promises that this time, he will truly enjoy Frelia.
  • Moulder - Syrene shows concern for Moulder due to how much they have had to rely on him, but Moulder is more concerned about Syrene because he imagined she was still unfamiliar with all the other people in the army. Syrene assures him that she has already learned everyone's name and rank, which impresses her, and he offers to help her if she has any questions. In the next conversation, he asked her if they had briefed her on the situation in Frelia. Syrene had actually left too early, but she was able to learn everything in the army through word-of-mouth, as people tend to confide in her. Moulder learns that most of the people confiding in her are female, which makes him glad that the women have someone to speak to about the problems, comparing Syrene to the mother complementing his role as the father. She then mentions that she has something to discuss with him, which makes Moulder afraid that he has offended someone. Syrene assures him that it is just a suggestion rather than criticism and will tell him on the day after the next new moon. In the final conversation, Moulder meets her on the specified day, having tried mulled at great length over guessing what Syrene was going to say to him. Syrene responds by wishing him a happy birthday. She considers it important during war to still observe birthdays and celebrate life, which Moulder agrees with as he had forgotten his own birthday. She tells Moulder that because he exhausts himself caring for others without paying attention to himself, they were all grateful to him, and many different people had approached Syrene wondering how to show this gratitude. Moulder is touched and a little embarrassed, and Syrene reminds him to take care of himself while thanking him.
  • Tana - Syrene scolds Tana for leaving Frelia without a word and tells her how sad Hayden was. Tana feels bad because of this, but at the same time she is annoyed by all the measures that Hayden had taken to protect her and wants some privacy. They begin to reminisce about how well they got along when they were younger and Syrene protected her after graduating from the academy. Tana thinks back fondly at the times when Syrene was like an older sister, and she had become lonely when Syrene was promoted to the pegasus nights. Tana is still glad that Syrene had risen so high, as it meant that they could be together on the battlefield, and they agreed to continue reminiscing later. In the next conversation, the two go over the fun they had the other night, and Syrene notes how Tana has matured and become more serious. Tana tells Syrene that she had learned from her strength and pride as pegasus knight and her kindness as a human being. Tana then asks Syrene if she could teach her how to cook so that she could cook her parents a proper meal after the war as an apology for running off. Syrene does not consider herself to be that skilled a cook, but she knows how to make some traditional Frelian dishes and agrees to teaching Tana. In the final conversation, Syrene compliments Tana on her first meals, which the other soldiers enjoyed as well. They tell each other to take care of themselves, and Tana tells Syrene to fulfill her duty of protecting her so they could go back home together. Syrene points out the danger of the battlefield and asks Tana to make sure that she returns home safely if something happens to her. Tana tells Syrene that sheis like a real sister to her, so she cannot die and must return to Frelia with her no matter what. Syrene ultimately promises that they will return to Frelia together.
  • Vanessa - Vanessa meets up with Syrene, who tries to convince Vanessa to refer to her less formally when they talk together, with little success. Syrene entrusts her with the war god Fale's amulet, a battle amulet which their father wanted her to have. Syrene had received one as well when she left home, but Vanessa had left to suddenly to get it. Syrene told her to try to rest, because she knew that Vanessa ignored such things when she was overwhelmed by responsibility. She volunteered to stay at Vanessa's side to ensure she has a a good night's sleep. In the next conversation, Syrene asks Vanessa who she has a crush on, as she notices that she has not even been eating much lately when usually Vanessa has been a charming overeater. Syrene guesses it is because of someone special and suggests that Vanessa not put anyone before her own health. Vanessa admits that she has been trying to become a great knight and attractive woman like Syrene, thinking herself to be pathetic at the same time. Syrene tells her that the boy would probably like her for who she is, and that she should just try to be more confident. Vanessa feels better due to opening up to Syrene and realizes that she will never catch up to Syrene, but she will have to get past comparing herself to her. In the final conversation, Vanessa has started to feel better. Syrene admits that she has always envied Vanessa's fortitude, bringing up an example from when they were young and Vanessa had managed to get medicine for their father when he collapsed. Syrene believes that Vanessa's true self emerges under difficult circumstances and she has emulated her to begin with to try to support the family like she had. Vanessa is about to admit who she loves when Syrene cuts her off, as she does not want to know until after the war. Syrene wants Vanessa to bring him home, where she will be waiting with the parents and her favorite meal. Vanessa endeavors to do her best for the war and for him, and Syrene assures her that she will be alright.
