Debut Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

Gilliam is a playable unit in Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones and the game's first recruitable Knight.

Information[edit]

Gilliam was a knight who had served Frelia loyally for about fifteen years. He was a recruit when he witnessed King Hayden's coronation. Moulder was the crown bearer, and Gilliam teased him due to his nervous stiffness, which made Gilliam slip and drop the crown. Gilliam and Moulder met formally the next day and formed a strong friendship. Over the years, he also formed a strong companionship with the pegasus knight Syrene. Gilliam rose through the ranks in the Frelian military as time went by and he eventually became one of King Hayden's most trusted vassals as well as part of the Eastern Watch.

When the War of the Stones broke out, Gilliam met with Franz, whom had fled from Renais after Grado's invasion and was seeking help. Gilliam first brought Franz to Mulan at the border in order to ensure Princess Tana's safety. Although the castle at Mulan was surrounded by enemy troops, Gilliam and Franz were able to work with Eirika's group to defeat them and rescue Tana in "Chapter 1: Escape!". They then met with King Hayden at Frelia. After hearing Eirika's story, Hayden decided to send Gilliam, Moulder and Vanessa to accompany Eirika's group as he could spare no soldiers. Gilliam loyally served Eirika and Ephraim's forces for the remainder of the war.

Possible Fates[edit]

Gilliam has two possible endings, depending on whether or not he reaches an A Rank Support with Syrene.

  • Default Ending - Gilliam returns to Frelia and continues serving as a faithful knight. He was able to strike fear into hearts of even the most arrogant and brash of Frelia's new recruits with his imposing demeanor.
  • Syrene and Gilliam's Ending - The two returned to Frelia and were married. They were considered to be a perfect match in general, and their marriage was blessed by the crown and the union of the knights. Gilliam and Syene then continued their unwavering service of Frelia together.

Support Conversations[edit]

Gilliam is capable of having support conversations with five other characters:

  • Franz - In the first conversation, Franz asks Gilliam if working together worries him because of their different lands and backgrounds, but this annoys Gilliam, who says he does not care who he pairs up with and that it is all the luck of the draw. Franz clarifies that he was wondering if his lesser skills were slowing Gilliam down, but Gilliam tells him that he is wasting his time worrying about that when he could be training. In the next conversation, Franz has improved from his training and is fascinated about the Frelian method of training individual fingers as well. Gilliam is impressed for Franz for progressing without complaint, and Franz tells him about special relaxation exercises he had practiced that prevents fatigue the following day, then promises to teac it to Gilliam when he shows interest. In the final conversation, these exercises lead Gilliam to realize that there is much he can learn from Renais, and Franz becomes excited about Gilliam's approval.
  • Garcia - The two meet up, and Garcia compliments Gilliam on his armor and the strength that would be required to wear it. When Gilliam brags about his strength, they agree to an arm-wrestling match which Garcia wins. In the next conversation, Garcia had come to realize that Gilliam was left-handed so he decides to make the match fairer by challenging him again but with switched hands. This time Gilliam wins, but he commends Garcia for putting up such a close match with his off hand. In the final conversation, they talk about families and romance. Gilliam says he has no wife and that he does not know how a soldier can win a woman's heart. However, Garcia tells him that when they change the world, people and soldiers would change with it, so after the war Gilliam would be tasked with a different type of battle. Garcia then insists that he and Ross be invited to Gilliam's wedding, to which he gladly agrees.
  • Moulder - In the first conversation, Moulder insists that he hears something, but Gilliam does not hear anything. He assures Moulder that he has better hearing due to being younger. In the next conversation, Moulder continues to hear the sound and describes it as a type of heavenly melody. Gilliam wonders if it is a sign, but Moulder quickly dismisses the possibility and becomes concerned about his own health. Gilliam assures Moulder that he will keep him safe. In the final conversation, Moulder has stopped hearing the melody, saying that it must have been a hallucination but he remembered what the melody was: the music that had played at King Hayden's coronation. They recalled how it had lead to their first meeting, and because he only heard it around Gilliam, Moulder sees it as a sign that they must both return to the basics, remembering who they were and what drove them to join the cause. Gilliam agrees.
  • Neimi - In their first conversation, Neimi points out to Gilliam that there is a dent in his armor and worries that he might be exposing a weakspot, but Gilliam explains that each scratch on his armor is a mark of pride from the stories they hold. Later Gilliam compliments Neimi on her keen marksmanship and she explains how her grandfather taught her to increase her eyesight by focusing on faraway things and. Eventually Gilliam tries out her technique for looking far away, but says that people and animals begin to avoid him when he's staring because of how scary he appears. After Neimi tries to make him seem less scary by recommending he smile and hold flowers, he concludes that it's better to just rely on her keen skills instead.
  • Syrene - Gilliam and Syrene are reunited, with Syrene complimenting his looks and Gilliam chastising her for teasing him. She reminds him of how he had been there during her first mission with Frelia's pegasus knight elite, but Gilliam has a fuzzy memory of it and claims to have trouble imagining her as a recruit. He assures her it is because of how fine a warrior she has become, and they agree that much more hangs in the balance in the current conflict than during that past mission. In the next conversation, Gilliam notices that Syrene seems unwell and then talks to her about how both of them seem to wind up being asked for advice from others often. He asks her what one is supposed to do when they do not know what advice to give, and Syrene assures him that just listening to others' problems is enough due to how natural it is to get scared while they are fighting a war. Gilliam asks Syrene if she is scared, which causes her to ask him if he is just trying to probe for her problems and assures her that she will come to him for help if she actually does have problems. In the final conversation, Syrene notices how Gilliam is always looking out for her while she is already making sure to look out for everyone else, and she admits that she stays close to him just to hear him say her name. Gilliam then asks Syrene to marry her when they return to Frelia, but Syrene tells him he does not have to wait that long for her answer. She agrees to his proposal and says she will wait until the end of the war to officially give her answer, and they both wish each other luck.

Trivia[edit]

  • Gilliam claims to be left-handed, although this is not reflected in his battle animations or official artwork.
