Debut Super Punch-Out!!

Super Macho Man is a recurring opponent from the Punch-Out!! series, who is usually featured as one of the final opponents of a game. He is most well known for his habit of flexing his pecs (as well as his butt cheeks in the Wii game).

Background[edit]

Super Macho Man was a vain boxer hailing from Los Angeles and usually spoke using surferish lingo. There he lived a very glitzy lifestyle filled with tanning and women fawning over him. Unlike others (such as Bald Bull), he embraced this popularity and the boost it provided to his already-high self-esteem. He had little respect for the people around him, as shown in several examples from his introduction video in the Wii game, such as his shoving the referee out of his way when returning to a match and his getting mad at the paparazzi for touching the ropes. He hated getting hurt in battle, but he believed that "trashing wimps" made the battles worthwhile. Super Macho Man was still a skilled boxer and would spend his time training on the beach in Venice. His moves consisted of powerful uppercuts that can usually be easily dodged, as well as his Super Spin Punch and some hooks which were harder to avoid.

He first appeared in Super Punch-Out!! for the arcade, as the fifth and final opponent, and he was ranked champion of the world. In this game, his spin punch was called the Macho Punch and was very powerful. It could only be avoided through ducking. He then appeared in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, where he was the champion of the World Circuit as well as the final opponent before the Dream Fight with Mike Tyson or Mr. Dream (and in the original Japanese version, which lacked the dream fight, he is the final opponent). His spin punches were somewhat easier to avoid in this version, but he was still known as a considerably tough opponent.

Super Macho Man returned in Super Punch-Out!! for the Super NES as the champion of the World Circuit. In this game, he incorporated exercise programs of successive uppercuts into his routine, but he was easier to defeat than in other games. He also appeared in Punch-Out!! for the Wii, where he was the #1 ranked fighter of the World Circuit and specialized in moves that were hard to dodge, including his patented spin punch. After losing to Little Mac, he lost his place in the spotlight with the paparazzi and the women. This caused him to become jealous of Little Mac, and he returned seeking revenge in Title Defense Mode, where his spin punches were faster.

Trivia[edit]

  • His exact place of origin has been inconsistently given as Venice Beach in the arcade game, Los Angeles in the NES game, and Hollywood in all later games. It should be noted that Venice Beach and Hollywood are both parts of Los Angeles.
  • Super Macho Man's sprite is a palette swap of Soda Popinski in the NES game and of Masked Muscle in the Super NES game.
  • After winning in the Wii game during Contender mode, he will seemingly grab onto a helicopter ladder that takes him away as he tells Little Mac, "Welcome to my world!"
