Sturgeon is an intellectual old man who has appeared as a supporting character in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and The Minish Cap.

Background[edit]

Sturgeon and his younger brother Orca were a pair of aspiring swordsmen who lived on Outset Island. They went on various adventures over the years, and they primarily sought Knight's Crests so that they could learn the hidden Hurricane Spin technique. However, they were never able to get close to the required ten crests after all of their years of adventures, and they eventually grew old. Sturgeon retired to Outset Island and lived in the upper floor of a house, while Orca lived in the lower floor. Sturgeon focused on knowledge, collecting all types of information and referring to himself as a "brain-of-all-trades". He became quite sensitive compared to his brother, but he was still quite cranky, particularly towards Orca. He complained about the noise Orca made during his exercises (as well as the shelf of jars that was usually broken in his commotion) and considered him to be a mindless hooligan due to his devotion to exercise over knowledge.

Sturgeon also had his own family, with his only other known relative being his granddaughter Sue-Belle, who came to Outset Island to take care of him when she became concerned for his health. Sturgeon tacked all of his disorganized research notes to the wall and invited others such as Link to learn from them. When he first encountered Link during the game, he taught him about L-targeting. Sturgeon later advised Link on the best way to help his grandmother with her health problems, which was the usage of a fairy.

Another version of Sturgeon appeared in The Minish Cap. He worked at the Royal Library and was in charge of stacking the books on the second floor. Sturgeon often noticed the books moving (which was actually the work of the Minish), although most others did not believe him or did not understand what was happening, which angered Sturgeon and led him to deny that he was crazy.

Trivia[edit]

  • He is named after a family of fish. Orca's naming follows a similar theme.
  • In The Wind Waker, his memos on the wall (known as "Sturgeon's One-Point Lessons") contain basic gameplay information.
  • He mentioned that "long ago", most likely during his childhood, he collected fairies from the Fairy Fountain in empty bottles when they were more plentiful.
