Orca is an elderly fisherman who acts as Link's swordfighting mentor in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

Background[edit]

Orca was born on Outset Island and initially trained to be a swordsman. He and his older brother Sturgeon, who was also a swordsman, went on several adventures during their youth. This included the search for Knight's Crests, so that they could learn the powerful Hurricane Spin technique, but they could not get close to finding the required ten crests after many long years of adventures. Orca later sustained a serious injury which forced him to set aside his dream of becoming a great swordsman. He returned to Outset Island and found a living working as a fisherman. Orca still had a sword in his home which he kept as a memento of his days training with a sword, and he was willing to tutor others in swordfighting, although because of the island's peaceful nature he was eventually the only person left with an interest in swords. While Sturgeon seemed to have a family, Orca was known for being "a lifelong bachelor". Orca was also more impulsive and aggressive compared to the intellectual and sensitive Sturgeon. He was often ashamed of Sturgeon because of how feeble he was. Orca and Sturgeon still lived in the same two-story house, with Orca running his dojo on the second floor while Sturgeon always complained about the noise he caused.

In The Wind Waker, Link came to Orca seeking a sword after his sister had been captured. Orca had him undergo a training sessions without knowing the details, as he was able to immediately see that it was a serious situation. Orca the gave Link the sword, as he had faith that Link would not misuse it. The sword was referred to as the Hero's Sword and is said to have fended off evil since the olden days. After Link set out, Orca sent him a letter asking him to find Knight's Crests. When Link returned, Orca had found out about Aryll's kidnapping and was disappointed in Link for not having told him. However, he offered to give Link new fencing sessions in which Link received a different rank depending on how many hits Link could get in before Orca could hit him. Starting off as a page, Link would be considered a knight after 100 hits and a swordsman after 300 hits. If Link accomplished the goal of striking Orca 500 times before Orca could hit him three times, he receives a Piece of Heart. With 999 hits before getting hit three times, Orca would call him Master and see that he had learned all that he could teach him. Once Link collected ten Knight's Crests, Orca told him about their power and taught him the Hurricane Spin. He was filled with pride about their long-held dream finally coming true and cried joyful tears, when he had thought that his tears had dried up years ago.

Trivia[edit]

  • He is named after the orca whale.
  • During fencing sessions, Orca will lose count after 999 strikes, which is the counter's maximum amount. He also breaks the fourth wall by asking Link if he wants to rest his "left index finger" (the finger used for button-mashing).
