Seel is a seal-like Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. Its evolved form is Dewgong.

Information[edit]

Seel is a Pokémon that loves freezing cold conditions, and they usually prefer to swim in an area of around 14F degrees. They cannot walk well on land, but they are graceful swimmers in exchange. It has light blue fur which protects it from the cold, and it loves iceberg-filled oceans. In the daytime, it usually falls asleep on the seabed in shallow waters.

Its nostrils close when it is swimming. Seel usually hunt for prey in the cold sea under sheets of ice, and they can make holes in the ice for air by punching through the ice with the horn atop their heads. It evolves into Dewgong at Level 34.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Pokémon: Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen, Seel was found at Seafoam Islands. In Red and Blue it could also be obtained by trading a Ponyta to someone on Cinnabar Island, and in FireRed/LeafGreen it was also found at Icefall Cave (and appeared when surfing as well as on land).

In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Seel could be found primarily within the Whirl Islands. In HeartGold/SoulSilver, it was also found at Seafoam Islands (on foot and surfing) and by surfing at Route 47. Seel could also be caught at the Pokéwalker's Stormy Beach course, from which it could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver.

In Diamond, Seel could be caught by surfing at Routes 226 and 230. In Black and White, it appeared at the Giant Chasm while surfing.

Other Games[edit]

In Pokémon Pinball, Seel could be caught at Seafoam Islands, and it was also featured in a bonus game of the Blue Table where the player had to hit it with the ball when it peered out from the water. It also appeared in Pokémon Puzzle Challenge as Pryce's Pokémon. In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, a Shadow Seel could be snagged from Cipher Peon Egrog at Phenac City. After being purified, this Seel could be transferred to any of the third generation color versions. In Pokémon Trozei!, Seel found at Phobos Submarine, Endless Level 25, Forever Level 25 and Mr. Who's Den.

Seel also appeared in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, where it could be recruited at the third through seventh floors of Mt. Freeze, the ninth through fourteenth floors of Stormy Sea, the sixth through fourteenth floors of Silver Trench and Far-off Sea, and the sixth through fourteenth basement floors of Marvelous Sea and Fantasy Strait. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, it could be recruited at the first five basement floors of Brine Cave. In Pokémon Rumble, it appeared at Bright Beach.

Video Games[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • Seel showed up every now and then in the Pokémon anime. Multiple Seel are owned by Misty and her sisters at the Cerulean City gym, including one that presents their badge and one which evolves into a Dewgong. There was also one episode in which Misty was hypnotized into acting like a Seel.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Seel is shown in a flashback during the Yellow arc as one of Lorelei's early Pokémon, and its poisoning by mankind's pollution is what drives her to join the Elite Four's cause after Agatha used her Gastly to cure the Seel. It later became the Dewgong that served as one of her main Pokémon.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name is a simple play on "seal".
