Ponyta is a pony-like Pokémon with a fiery mane that was introduced in the first generation Pokémon games. Its only evolved form is Rapidash.

Information[edit]

At birth, Ponyta initially have trouble standing up and are weak runners that can barely keep up with their parents. As they grow older however, their legs gradually become stronger as they chase their parents. Their trademark flaming mane and tail also grow about an hour after birth. Ponyta are also known for having hooves that are ten times tougher than diamonds, making them capable of trampling basically anything. Its hind legs kick back at anything it senses behind it. They spend most of their time running in fields and mountains.

Ponyta's light body combined with most of the factors above contribute to it being a world-class jumper. It builds up its jumping skills by leaping over grass that grows taller every day. Its hooves and sturdy legs absorb the impact of a hard landing. It is capable of clearing Ayers Rock in one leap. Ponyta eventually evolves into Rapidash at Level 40.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Pokémon: Red and Blue Versions, Ponyta are only found at the Pokémon Mansion, while in Yellow they only appear at Route 17. In FireRed and LeafGreen, Ponyta instead appeared at Kindle Road and Mt. Ember.

In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Ponyta could be found at Routes 22, 26, 27 and 28 and Mt. Silver. In HeartGold/SoulSilver, Ponyta also appeared in the Plains area of the Safari Zone when enough Rock objects were present. Ponyta could also be caught at the Rugged Road and Volcano Path routes of the Pokéwalker, from which they could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver.

In Diamond and Pearl, Ponya appeared at Routes 206, 210, 211, 214 and 215. In Platinum, they only appeared at Routes 206, 207 and 210.

Other Games[edit]

Ponyta could be found at Cinnabar Island in Pokémon Pinball. In Pokémon Trozei!, Ponyta was found at Endless Level 26, Forever Level 26 Pair Trozei and Mr. Who's Den. Ponyta also appeared in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, where it could be recruited at the fifty-seventh through fifty-ninth floors of Joyous Tower. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Ponyta was recruitable at the first nineteen floors of Volcano Cave and the first thirteen basement floors of Dark Crater, in addition to a non-playable Ponyta appearing as part of Team Flame.

In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, Ponyta appeared at Chroma Road. In My Pokémon Ranch, a Ponyta could be obtained from a random trade with Hayley and then transferred to Diamond or Pearl (as well as Platinum in Japan). In Pokémon Rumble, Ponyta was found at Fiery Furnace. Ponyta also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure, where it could be befriended at the Lava Zone and also appeared at Meeting Place.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • Ponyta was featured in an episode of the Pokémon anime's first series as the Pokémon of Lara Laramie, who rode the Ponyta to win yearly races. After Lara was injured in an accident set up by her rival, Ash rode the Ponyta instead to victory, and it evolved into Rapidash by the end of the race. The episode establishes that Ponyta has control over the flames of its body so that only trainers it does not trust will be burned by them, allowing trustworthy people to safely ride it. Ponyta also made several minor appearances over the anime's run, such as one instance where they were shown to pull Santa's sleigh in place of reindeer (although this was before the more appropriate Stantler was introduced).
  • A Ponyta was featured in the first chapter of the Pokémon Adventures manga's Yellow arc as the mount of a postman. In the Platinum arc, it was featured as one of Platina's Pokémon that she usually rode on. In battle, it was mostly known for being weak and always losing gym battles until the fight with Byron, when it defeated two Bronzong and promptly evolved into Rapidash.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name is of course a play on "pony", possibly also referring to "ponytail".
