Psyduck is a duck Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games.

Information[edit]

Psyduck is a Pokémon with a chronic headache that often appears to be vacant and unaware. However, it actually lulls its enemies into a false sense of security with this appearance while it unleashes its psychokinetic powers, although it is uncertain if Psyduck truly intends to do so. When their headaches climax, they use strange powers described as mystical and odd, but it will not recall these episodes later, which is actually why it is always puzzled.

It appears that Psyduck do not recall using their powers, because at the time their minds enter a state similar to deep sleep. Psyduck evolves into the more adept Golduck at Level 33.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Pokémon: Red and Blue Versions, Psyduck are found at the Seafoam Islands, as well as by fishing with the Super Rod at Routes 24 and 25, Cerulean City and the Safari Zone. In Yellow, it can be commonly found by surfing at Route 6, while in FireRed, they are found by surfing or fishing with the Super Rod in nearly every body of water, and they can also be found on land at the Seafoam Islands, Treasure Beach, Water Path, Ruin Valley, Kindle Path, Icefall Cave. Five Isle Meadow, Cape Brink, Bond Bridge, Berry Forest and Canyon Entrance.

In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Psyduck could be found by surfing at Routes 6 and 35 as well as Ilex Forest. In Crystal, it also appeared on land at all of those locations as well as National Park only at night. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, it could also be found on land at the Seafoam Islands, surfing at the Cerulean Cave, the Whirl Islands, and both on land and surfing at the Johto Safari Zone's Wetland area. They could also be found at the Pokéwalker's Beautiful Beach and Stormy Beach courses, from which they could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver.

In Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, Psyduck could be found by surfing in the Safari Zone. In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Psyduck could be found by surfing in nearly any body of water, and they could be found on land at the Great Marsh, Lake Acuity, Lake Valor, Lake Verity, Oregburgh Gate, Ravaged Path, Route 208 and the foggy area of Route 210. Within these games, a group of Psyduck also block the path to Celestic Town on Route 210 due to suffering from headaches until the player gives them a SecretPotion, which will cure their headaches at which point they wander off.

Other Games[edit]

It appears at the River course in Pokémon Snap. In Pokémon Pinball, Psyduck is part of the table in Blue mode, and can be caught at Cerulean City. Psyduck also appeared in Pokémon Puzzle League as one of Misty's Pokémon. Additionally, in Pokémon Stadium, a unique Psyduck that knows the move Amnesia can be earned as a prize for registering all 151 Pokémon in the Hall of Fame, and this Psyduck could be transferred to any of the first generation Pokémon games. Within the line of Pokémon e-Reader cards, Psyduck appeared in "Wooper's Juggling Game" as one of the falling Pokémon that Wooper had to keep in the air with its Water Gun. Psyduck only entered the game after the player reached 3000 points and fell twice as fast as the other Pokémon.

In Pokémon Channel, a Psyduck is given to the player by Professor Oak. In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, Psyduck could be found at the Safari Zone. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Psyduck was one of the potential starter Pokémon whom the player would be transformed into at the start of the game, and other Psyduck could be found at the ninth through tenth floors of Joyous Tower. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, it was no longer a starter Pokémon and was found at the first eight basement floors of Waterfall Cave. It was also found in Safra Sea in Pokémon Ranger as well as Bright Beach in Pokémon Rumble. In PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure, Psyduck appeared at Beach Zone.

Video Games[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • in the Pokémon anime, during the first season Misty caught a Psyduck by accident. It became a running gag of Psyduck constantly coming out of its Pokéball instead of the Pokémon Misty actually wanted to use, leading to Misty being frustrated by Psyduck's seeming uselessness. However, when its head was hurt enough, it would go into a trance and use powerful psychic powers. Other Psyduck have also appeared throughout the series, including one Sinnoh episode about the Psyduck blocking the path to Celestic Town, where they were actually a family trying to return to Lake Psyduck, and needed Ash and his friends to defeat some Muk that were stopping them.
  • Within the Pokémon Adventures manga, one chapter of the Red/Green/Blue arc had Koga's Gastly reviving an undead Psyduck that attacked Red, although it was easily destroyed by Ash's Bulbasaur. During the Diamond/Pearl arc, the group of Psyduck blocking Celestic Town from the game appeared and were once more cured by the Secret Potion. The difference in this version was that the group included trainer-owned Psyduck and was an obstacle orchestrated by Team Galactic. Cynthia specifically helped them as part of her campaign against Team Galactic.

Trivia[edit]

  • Psyduck's name is a combination of "psychic" and "duck".
