Professor Magnolia is a Pokémon Professor who was featured in Pokémon Sword and Shield.

Background[edit]

Professor Magnolia was a researcher who lived in the Galar region. She had her own Research Lab in Wedgehurst and spent most of her time at her home in the neighboring Route 2. Her research was centered around the Dynamax phenomenon. She discovered how the power unleashed by Wishing Stars (known as Galar particles) could be used to Dynamax Pokémon. This led to the development of Dynamax Bands, which trainers could use to Dynamax their Pokémon at Power Spots. She also developed a Power Spot Detector, for locating active Power Spots. Magnolia had a granddaughter named Sonia who helped her to run her lab, and Magnolia often encouraged her to doe more with her life.

During Sword/Shield, Professor Magnolia first appeared when she was visited by Victor/Gloria, Hop and Leon. Victor/Gloria and Hop were new trainers who had just received their first Pokémon and their Pokédexes, and they wanted Magnolia to encourage Leon to endorse them for the gym challenge. Magnolia helped to convince Leon to give them a chance. After Victor/Gloria and Hop discovered a pair of freshly-fallen Wishing Stars, Magnolia also made them into Dynamax Bands for them to use. As the two young trainers set off on their journey, Magnolia also pushed for Sonia to do something as well and gave her the Power Spot Detector.

Magnolia left her home several times later on, in order to help Sonia with her research regarding the legends of Galar and the Darkest Day. She ultimately decided to pass her lab coat on to Sonia. Sonia felt that she had not earned it, because her work was not yet complete, but Magnolia saw it as something to motivate her to finish her work. Afterwards, Sonia was able to earn the title of professor. Magnolia continued to observe and help Sonia afterwards.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • In Pokémon: Twilight Wings, she made a cameo appearance in the fourth episode, where she was seen drinking tea while sitting at a table with Sonia, who was talking to Nessa.

Trivia[edit]

  • She is named after a plant genus.
  • Magnolia notably does not take on most of the roles usually associated with Pokémon professors: she does not narrate the game's introduction, provide the starter Pokémon or provide the player's Pokédex, although the latter is performed by Sonia.
