Poochyena is a common dark dog-like Pokémon that was introduced in the third generation games. Its evolved form is Mightyena.

Information[edit]

Poochyena are omnivores, which means that they will eat anything, and they are also known to bite at anything that moves. They chase down prey until the victim becomes exhausted, although they have been known to retreat if the prey strikes back. Its distinguishing feature is how large its fangs are compared to the rest of its body, and it savagely threatens its foes by baring its fangs. Poochyena also try to intimidate foes by making the hairs on their tails bristle out.

Poochyena also as an acute sense of smell which aids it in tracking down prey without losing track. It evolves into Mightyena at Level 18.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Pokémon: Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald Versions, Poochyena were uncommonly found at Routes 101, 102 and 103. In Emerald, they were more common and also appeared at Routes 104, 110, 116, 117, 120, 121 and 123 as well as at Petalburg Woods. In Ruby and Sapphire, a wild Poochyena that was chasing Professor Birch at Route 101 acted as the first opponent which the player faced in the games (although it could not be caught yet).

In Platinum, they could appear at Route 214 when using the Pokéradar. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, they appeared at Route 1 during swarms. In White, it was found at Route 9 during swarms.

Other Games[edit]

A Shadow Poochyena could be snagged from Boydbuilder Kilen at Gateon Port in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, and after being purified it could be traded to any of the third generation color versions. In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, they were found at the Plains. In Pokémon Trozei!, it appeared at Secret Storage 16, Endless Level 33, Pair Trozei and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Poochyena could be recruited at the first three floors of Thunderwave Cave and the first eight floors of Howling Forest, while in Explorers of Time and Darkness they could be found at the first fifteen basement floors of Concealed Ruins and World Abyss as well as the first forty-eight basement floors of Final Maze. Explorers also had three non-playable Poochyena that made up Team Poochy, which specialized in capturing criminals. Poochyena also appeared in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs at Rasp Cavern.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, a pack of Poochyena attacked Professor Birch in the first episode of the Hoenn series until May was able to ward them off with Mudkip, which mimics the events of the games. Another episode featured Max befriending a Poochyena and helping it to evolve. Otherwise, Poochyena have mostly made various minor appearances.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga's Ruby/Saphire arc, Ruby owned a Poochyena that his father had give him as a child. It was a female that acted as Ruby's Beauty Contest Pokémon, and it evolved into Mightyena at the same time that his Skitty evolved while they were fighting off Mawile at the Granite Cave.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name is simply a combination of "pooch" (which is a name used for dogs) and "hyena" (which is another canine which Poochyena resembles, particularly in its hunting habits and omnivorous nature).
