Mightyena is an intimidating and deadly hyena-like Pokémon that was introduced in the third generation games. It is the evolved form of Poochyena.

Information[edit]

Mightyena evolves from Poochyena at Level 18. They travel and act as a pack of around ten in a wild, and they have done so since ancient times. They never defy their leader's orders and attack with perfectly coordinated teamwork. A captured Mightyena's memories of life in the wild cause it to only obey the commands of trainers whom they know to possess superior skill. Mightyena gives off obvious signs when it is preparing to attack, as it will start growling deeply and flatten its body. They attack by savagely biting with their pointed fangs.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In most cases, Mightyena could be obtained primarily by evolving a Poochyena. In Pokémon: Emerald Version, they were uncommonly found at Routes 120, 121 and 123. In Diamond, it could appear on Routes 214 and 215 while using the Pokéradar.

Other Games[edit]

Mightyena could only be obtained through evolution in Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire as well as Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams. In Pokémon Trozei!, it was found at Secret Storage 12, Endless Level 56, Forever Level 27 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, it could be recruited at the sixteenth through twenty-ninth basement floors of Concealed Ruins and the sixteenth through twenty-seventh basement floors of World Abyss. Mightyena also appeared in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs at the Old Mansion and the Fire Temple.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, one early episode of the Hoenn series featured a Ranger who used three Mightyena and a Poochyena to protect a nature reserve. Max befriended the lone Poochyena and helped train it until it evolved so that it would not be left out. A Mightyena was also part of Butler's magic show during the sixth movie but was not used for battle aside from planting a tracking device. Butch of Team Rocket has also owned a Mightyhena. They otherwise have made mostly minor appearances and have also been shown belonging to various Team Magma grunts.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, a pair of Mightyena were shown as the Pokémon attacking Professor Birch in the beginning of the Ruby/Sapphire arc. However, Ruby wound up refusing to battle them, although he and Birch were able to escape the Mightyena. Ruby's Poochyena evolved into a Mightyena while fighting off Mawile in Granite Cave alongside his Skitty which evolved into a Delcatty. It became an even more capable battler and was a mainstay of Ruby's team.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name is simply a combination of "mighty" and "hyena".
