Munchlax is a small heavy-eating Pokémon that was introduced in the fourth generation games as the baby form of Snorlax.

Information[edit]

Munchlax is a small Pokémon that is covered in thick body fur. It eats its weight in food on a daily basis and will often swallow food with little to no chewing. In its desperation to find food, it will often hide food under its long body hair, but it also often forgets about said food later. They seem to be particularly attracted to honey, if the fourth generation method of capturing them is any indication. It is uncertain from the Pokédex entries alone whether or not Munchlax sleeps often, like its evolved from does.

A Munchlax is born only to a Snorlax that is bred while holding Full Incense. It will evolve into Snorlax when it levels up after maxing out its happiness.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Pokémon: Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Munchlax has a chance of appearing at trees that have been lathered in Honey. The chances of a Munchlax appearing vary but are usually a rare 1%. They can be found through the Pokéwalker in the Quiet Cave and Champ Road, from which it could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver. In Black and White, the player can trade a Cinccino for a Munchlax at Undella Town during the summer.

Other Games[edit]

Munchlax appeared in Pokémon Dash as one of the racers and could be played as in one of the special courses. A non-obtainable Munchlax also appeared in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, where it belonged to the Herbalist and would sometimes appear at a Poké Spot. There it would set off a false alarm to the player, who would have to feed it food to appease it until its owner came and took it away, apologizing. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, it had a chance of appearing in Pokémon Square and would give the player a Munchbelt if they fed it, although it could not be recruited. Notably, all three of these games preceded Diamond and Pearl.

Munchlax is one of the starter Pokémon that the player is potentially turned into at the beginning of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, and within the game wild Munchlax could also be found in the first thirteen basement floors of the Mystifying Jungle as well as the first twenty-nine basement floors of Mystery Jungle. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, the player can choose from Munchlax, Pachirisu and Starly as a Partner Pokémon at Vientown in the beginning of the game, and if it was not chosen the Munchlax was instead befriended later on in sidequest where it wanders into the player's house. Afterwards, the player can switch the chosen Pokémon out for one of the unchosen two (as well as fifteen other partner Pokémon that could be recruited at different poings) later on at Chicole Village's Partner Farm. In Pokémon Rumble, Munchlax is found at the Silent Forest. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it appears at Curl Bay and the Fire Temple. Munchlax also appears in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Meadow Zone.

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

  • Munchlax appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as one of the Pokémon that can be summoned at random from the Poké Ball item. When summoned, Munchlax does not directly harm anyone, but it instead wanders around the stage and consumes any items it comes across, with the exceptions of living items, Assist Trophies and Poké Balls. A trophy and sticker of Munchlax are also available in the game.

In Other Media[edit]

  • Munchlax was the first fourth generation Pokémon to appear in the Pokémon anime. One first appeared in the seventh movie, where it wound up evolving into a Snorlax to stay afloat in the Block Bot flood. May also caught a Munchlax in the Hoenn episodes that acted as one of her main Pokémon. They have also made several small appearances in the episodes actually set in Sinnoh.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Diamond owns a Munchlax as his first Pokémon from the beginning of the Diamond/Pearl arc onward.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name is simply a combination of "munch" (as in its primary activity of eating) and "lax" (as in relax, just like Snorlax).
  • Munchlax is unique in having cameo appearances in three third generation spin-off games released prior to the fourth generation games.
