Dr. Madeline Bergman is a scientist working for the Galactic Federation who acts as a key player in the plot of Metroid: Other M, although the actual Madeline Bergman does not appear until the game's climax. The name of Madeline Bergman is also used by the game's primary antagonist, MB.
Background[edit]
Madeline Bergman worked on the Bottle Ship, where she held the ranks of Site Manager and Development Director. She was in charge of the Federation program to create clones of Space Pirates and other related creatures that would be loyal to the Galactic Federation. She also helped to develop MB, an artificial intelligence system based on Mother Brain, for use in controlling all of the clones. The Federation eventually started creating clones of the Metroids as well. In order to control them, a human form was created for MB so that the Metroids would have nurturing, motherly presence.
Bergman observed MB's development. Even though she was efficient at her job, she also began to develop emotions and ideals which opposed the goals of the Galactic Federation. At the same time, MB and Madeline had bonded on a personal level, with Bergman referring to MB as "Melissa Bergman" due to their similar initials, and MB began seeing MAdeline as her own mother figure. Federation soldiers eventually took MB by force in order to modify her personality, despite Bergman calling out to them. This caused MB to feel betrayed and to seek revenge against everyone on the Bottle Ship. All of the creatures were turned against the Federation officials, all of whom were soon wiped out with the exception of Madeline Bergman herself.
She was able to take shelter in Room MW of the Bioweapon Research Center, while the rest of the Bottle Ship was engulfed in chaos. Madeline was still able to send out a distress signal, which attracted Adam Malkovich's Seventh Battalion and Samus Aran. Adam was able to locate her before he went to Sector Zero, although it was never mentioned whether or not they actually communicated. When Samus arrived soon afterwards, Bergman panicked and wound up releasing the Queen Metroid into the room that Samus was in. Samus destroyed the Queen Metroid with a Power Bomb that also destroyed the door to the room where Bergman was hiding. Samus was able to calm Bergman down, and she then told Samus the truth about MB and the Bottle Ship operations.
MB then confronted Samus and Bergman by herself, armed with a freeze gun. Madeline Bergman tried reasoning with MB and seemed to be succeeding at talking her down, but this was all undone when the Federation forces arrived and provoked MB into combat. MB took a shot from a freeze gun for Madeline that she was able to quickly recover from, and Samus protected Madeline from the creatures that MB summoned in her rage. This battle ended when Samus scanned MB, and Madeline shot MB with an ice gun. This put her creatures to rest, at which point the Federation soldiers mercilessly opened fire and completely destroyed MB. Bergman mourned MB's demise, while the Federation called for Bergman to be escorted away.
Anthony Higgs managed to get the general to let him and Samus escort Bergman to Federation headquarters in order to keep her safe. Madeline Bergman spent most of the trip resting, and she was expected to explain all of the Bottle Ship's operations upon her arrival at the Galactic Federation's headquarters. She felt guilty about what had happened to MB, who was labelled insane, and she considered herself to be the insane one. Madeline Bergman's future beyond her testimony to the Galactic Federation is unknown.
