Debut Metroid: Other M

MB (also known as Melissa Bergman or Madeline Bergman) is an android created by the Galactic Federation using the brainwaves of Mother Brain, who acts as the main antagonist of Metroid: Other M.

Background[edit]

MB was created as part of the Metroid Militarization Project, for the express purpose of controlling the clones of the Space Pirates and Metroids that were bred aboard the Bottle Ship. The scientists had decided to give MB a humanoid form so that she could establish a maternal bond with the Metroid clones in order to help them grow. What they did not anticipate was that she began to develop emotions and self-awareness, which came with opinions that were contrary to those of the Federation. It was believed that she developed a soul when a Metroid clone first recognized her as its mother.

MB had grown attached to one particular scientist, Madeline Bergman. Bergman treated MB like a daughter and even nicknamed her Melissa due to their matching initials, leading to MB considering her to be her mother. However, the Federation soldiers grew wary of MB's growing self awareness and took her away in hopes of modifying her to remove all the human traits she had acquired. Madeline was nearby at the time and did not acknowledge MB, which caused her to break down and attack the nearby scientists, killing them. She took control of all of the Bottle Ship's lifeforms and had them murder everyone on the ship until only Madeline remained, as she believed that they all deserved to be judged for their actions.

Eventually, both a Galactic Federation task force and bounty hunter Samus Aran arrived on the ship in response to a Baby's Cry distress signal. According to MB, one among the Federation was a Deleter whose job was to kill every living human aboard the ship including his allies, which seemed to influence MB's actions. Samus first encountered MB at the Experiment Floor within Sector 2. She had previously apparently witnessed Maurice Favreau being murdered in the snow outside by the Deleter, so she panicked due to assuming that Samus was the Deleter and fled from her. However, the real Deleter then attacked in a RB176 Ferrocrusher.

After Samus saved her, MB began to hint at the activities occurring on board the ship and explained the concept of the Deleter to Samus so that she could seek him out, likely in hopes that he would not reach Bergman. Samus then departed, but they later met again within Sector 1's Research Center. MB posed as Madeline Bergman and explained all of the illegal experiments conducted aboard the Bottle Ship in further depth. Samus came to admire her apparent courage and sense of responsibility. She explained that the Metroids were being kept within the hidden Sector Zero and told her about MB as if it were a separate entity. She also planted further seeds of doubt in Samus's mind about Adam Malkovich, claiming that it was possible he knew about the Deleter and showing her a document which revealed that he was in charge of the Metroid Militarization Plan.

Not long afterwards, James Pierce (the Deleter) sneaked up on her in an attempt to kill her, but MB struck back and seemed to murder him herself. MB also eventually set the Bottle Ship on a crash course to the Federation headquarters as her attempt to get revenge on the humans she had grown to hate. That plan was foiled by Anthony Higgs, who was ultimately able to activate the ship's emergency brakes in time. When Samus returned to the research center, she discovered the real Madeline Bergman and learned the truth about MB. After Samus's battle with the Queen Metroid, MB confronted both Samus and Madeline, both of whom she focused her hated on. Madeline was able to reach out to MB with her words, at which point MB pushed Madeline to the side and was hit by an ice beam fired by a newly arrived Federation force.

MB was able to quickly thaw herself from the ice and summoned monstrous creatures from parts of the room to fight off the Federation soldiers as well as Samus. This battle ended when Samus scanned MB, and Madeline shot MB with an ice gun. This put her creatures to rest, at which point the Federation soldiers mercilessly opened fire. This completely destroyed MB. Samus later pondered MB's gray morality, while addressing her as Melissa.

Trivia[edit]

  • It seems that Ridley was the only bioweapon aboard the Bottle Ship which acted independently from MB's commands.
