Jagen (called Jeigan in previous translations) is a playable unit in Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryuu to Hikari no Tsurugi as well as its remakes in Monshou no Nazo and Shadow Dragon, as well as appearing as a supporting character in Book 2 of Monshou no Nazo.

Background[edit]

Book One[edit]

Jagen was a powerful and seasoned veteran of the Altean army, who was known for his formidable abilities despite his age. He first showed up in the second portion of Shadow Dragon's prologue, where he was assigned to protect Marth and helped him in his escape from Altea. Afterwards, he was automatically playable in all of the other Book One games, aiding the Altean army in their campaign during the War of Darkness. Following the war's conclusion, Jagen retired from active duty and replaced the ill Malledus as Marth's tactician.

Book Two[edit]

Two years later, Jagen still acted as Marth's adviser as he progressed in his new campaign during the War of Heroes, considering himself no longer fit for combat as he grew older. Jagen advised Marth to show restraint when dealing with the cruel and infuriating Commander Lang, but when Marth finally had too much and stood up to him, Jagen joined in and went as far as to challenge Lang to a fight, though Lang chose to flee instead.

Jagen continued to provide invaluable advice and guidance to Marth throughout his journey, and reassured him when he had doubts about his abilities. It was not always so reassuring though, such as in the final chapter when the path to Medeus was blocked by the hypnotized Elice, Rena, Maria and Nyna. Jagen honestly pointed out that at least one of the women would have to be killed in order to reach Medeus. When Marth protested this, Jagen told him it was just an option and that it was up to Marth to make the final decision.

The ending only mentions that following Jagen's death (how long after the game is undisclosed), Kain succeeded him as Marth's subordinate.

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

  • In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Jagen appeared as an Advanced-rank Primary Spirit. When fought in a Spirit battle, Jagen's Spirit would possess Ganondorf and start the battle off damaged but with enhanced strength and defense.

Other Media[edit]

  • Jagen appears in the two episode Fire Emblem anime OVA, where he is first seen being teleported out of Altea Castle with Marth by Elice. Afterwards, he follows a role similar to his role in the games.

Trivia[edit]

  • In fan circles, he has become known as an archetypical Fire Emblem character who is pre-promoted and nearly invincible early in the game; however, he takes up experience that could be used to strengthen weaker characters and is outmatched by later enemies of the game due to poor growth rates. This is actually pointed out (using in-universe terms) by a villager in Shadow Dragon.
  • In Shadow Dragon, he receives a Support Bonus from Marth.
