Izuka is a boss character in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn who previously made a small appearance in Path of Radiance.

Background[edit]

Izuka was a twisted and eccentric man gifted in the dark arts. He was somewhat egotistical and loved to belittle those around him, and he was known for rambling on madly. He originally served as a court naturalist under King Ashnard, performing a variety of inhumane experiments on laguz. The most well known of these experiments was the drug that would warp laguz into being permanently bestial servants, known as the Feral Ones. The drug was latest tested on a beorc, Renning, during the Mad King's War, which made him a more bloodthirsty killer known as Bertram and loyal to Daein.

In Path of Radiance, he was only seen in "Chapter 28: Twisted Tower". He held Leanne at Gritnea Tower under orders from Ashnard. He left Leanne in the care of a soldier while he went to calm down the Feral Ones. However, he returned to find that both the soldier (actually Naesala in disguise) and Leanne had disappeared. This was accompanied by news that the Crimean Liberation Army was approaching. Izuka had the Feral Ones released to battle them and then decided to make his escape.

Three years later, Izuka helped to assemble the Daein Liberation Army, apparently to drive Begnion occupational forces out of Daein. However, Izuka was actually working with Begnion to set up a government on Daein that could be easily manipulated by the Begnion senators. So he sought a gullible orphan, Pelleas, and convinced both him and Almedha that Pelleas was the long lost son of Ashnard and thus the heir to the throne. This was also to attract Micaiah and the Dawn Brigade. After Micaiah arrived at the Daein Liberation Army's camp, Izuka had her appointed general in "Chapter 5: The Lost Heir" of "Part 1: Silver-Haired Maiden". This was to mimic how Ike and Elincia had led the Crimean Liberation Army to victory. However, Micaiah raised disagreed with Izuka both on his brutal battle strategies and his manipulation of Prince Pelleas.

After the war was won for Daein, Izuka was able to trick Pelleas into signing a blood pact with Begnion by saying that it was a peace treaty and that there was nothing wrong with the document. This put Daein under Begnion's control. But soon afterwards, Izuka was captured by Bastian and Volke, who interrogated him vigorously to find a cure for the Feral One drug, as they had found Renning and were trying to restore him to his old self. Izuka was difficult with them, but he did tell them many secrets of the Feral One process at the same time. At one point Izuka offered to create an antidote if they let him free, but they refused because they thought a monster like him should not be set loose into the world again.

Izuka remained in their captivity until he escaped in "Chapter 5: Unforgivable Sin" of "Part 4: Of Gods and Men". At that point he used fell magic to summon the souls of laguz who were turned into Feral Ones, then sending them out to kill Elincia and the other soldiers when they arrived to detain him. However, they were able to fight through the Feral Ones and killed Izuka in the following battle. In his last words, Izuka regretted his life's work coming to an end.
