Haunter is the middle evolution between Gastly and Gengar introduced in the first generation games.

Information

Haunter evolves from Gastly at Level 25. Due to its ability to slip through walls, it is believed to come from another dimension. They also are potentially among the most malevolent of Pokémon, as its tongue is made of gas, and by licking its victim, it saps the victim's life force while also causing the victim to shake constantly until they die. Haunter wait in total darkness, where they stalk their next victims. It is believed that when one trips for apparently no reason or hears a noise when no one is around, a Haunter is involved.

Its touch is also known to cause endless shuddering. They are dangerous enough that people are advised not to approach one that beckons to them, as they will try to steal the person's life force. A Haunter evolves into Gengar when it is traded to another trainer.

Mainstream Games

In Pokémon: Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen, Haunter are rarely found in the Pokémon Tower, and they are also found on Five Island in FireRed and LeafGreen.

In Pokémon: Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Haunter are commonly found in Route 8 at night, and they also appear at Rock Tunnel in Crystal and the Forest area of Johto's Safari Zone in HeartGold/SoulSilver. In HeartGold/SoulSilver, they can also be found at the White Lake course of the Pokéwalker.

In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Haunter appears in Old Chateau when one of the third generation games is in the GBA slot, and they will also normally appear in Turnback Cave in Diamond/Pearl. A trainer in Snowpoint City will also trade a Haunter (which is holding an Everstone, preventing it from evolving in the trade) for a Medicham.

Other Games

In Pokémon Pinball, Haunter could be obtained through evolution, and they were featured in a minigame where the player had to knock out a pair of Haunter after hitting three Ghastly, which was followed by a Gengar. In Pokémon Snap, Haunter appeared in the Tunnel area, but took on the form of Koffing-esque gaseous spheres, only being seen in the true form in developed photographs. They also appeared in Hey You, Pikachu!, where they tried to scare Pikachu during some Little Poliwag Lost minigames, but could be warded off with Thunderbolt. In the line of Pokémon-based e-Reader applications, Haunter appeared in one version of the Metronome short in which it would show up to scare Clefable if its Metronome turned day into night. In Pokémon Trozei!, they appeared at Huge Storage 1 and Mr. Who's Den.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Haunter is found on the first forty-nine floors of Sky Stairway, while in the sequels it must be obtained through evolution. In Pokémon Ranger, it is found at Dusk Factory, and in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it is found in Almia Castle and Oil Field Hideout. In Pokémon Rumble, it is found at Eternal Tower. Haunter also appeared in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs at Oblivia Ruins and Dark Temple. In PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure, it appeared at the Haunted Zone.

• In the Pokémon anime, it appeared as part of the arc in which Ash battled Sabrina. First Ash teamed up with Gastly, Haunter and Gengar when he was temporarily turned into a ghost, and when he regained his body, the Haunter returned to Saffron with him. Haunter then would up winning Ash's gym challenge for him by getting Sabrina to laugh, and Ash then left Haunter to stay with Sabrina. Haunter also appeared as one of Morty's Pokémon.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Haunter appeared as one of Agatha's Pokémon, and she also used Haunter as part of her invasion force. Eusine also used a Haunter in battle.
• One chapter of the Electric Tale of Pikachu manga featured a giant Haunter known as the Black Fog that used its Dream Eater to steal the souls of people and Pokémon alike. Sabrina had a grudge against this Haunter and wound up falling victim to it. Ash worked with a team of hunters in order to weaken it enough and try to catch it in a Hyper Ball, but the Haunter chose to self-destruct, which apparently killed it and restored Sabrina. Brock theorized that the Haunter used to be worshiped like a god and chose to go out like a god as opposed to being captured.
